Chapter 239: I Don’t Want Her Gratitude, Yeah Right

Er Laizi’s eyes crossed as he stared at the tip of Gu Fei’s dagger. "Y-yes, he lives in a courtyard on the back street behind the Prince Qi Mansion. If you go there and ask around, you’ll find out."

Gu Fei nodded. "Fine. I’ll find him myself. My quarrel is with him, not you, so this business between us is over."

"On one condition: you never cause trouble at my shop again."

"If you dare to cause trouble again, I can’t say for sure you’ll keep your life."

Er Laizi stared at the dagger. "I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare! I’ll never dare again."

Just then, the bed let out a faint CREAK. Gu Fei glanced toward it, where a woman wrapped in a blanket was trembling uncontrollably.

Gu Fei was amused. She withdrew her gaze and said slowly, "Then we have a deal."

"From now on, if you’re ever on that street, you walk on the opposite side. You hear me?"

Er Laizi’s voice trembled. "Yes, yes! I—I’ll do my best to avoid that street from now on."

Lying on the roof, Xiao Yu found this all rather amusing.

’What’s the big deal?’ he thought. ’It’s just some punk making trouble at her shop. She could just beat him to death and be done with it. Did she really have to come out this late at night just to scare him with a dagger?’

’Then again,’ he mused, ’what’s with Housekeeper Wu? He could have picked on anyone. Why did it have to be Little Fei?’

Having finished her interrogation, Gu Fei climbed back out the window. She was even thoughtful enough to close it properly behind her, lest Er Laizi catch a cold.

She put away her dagger and started back, thinking as she walked. ’As the old saying goes, a prime minister’s servant is as powerful as a seventh-rank official.’

’This Housekeeper Wu isn’t like Er Laizi, who can be dealt with by a simple beating and a good scare.’

’The Chief Steward of the Prince Qi Mansion wields considerable power. I bet even the Prefectural Governor of East Sea County has to treat him with courtesy.’

’I’ll have to find another way to handle a man like that.’

’Killing him is out of the question. The Prince Qi Mansion would never let it go if I did. Besides, it’s not like he’s committed a capital offense.’

’I’ll go talk to Housekeeper Wu tomorrow and see what happens.’

Gu Fei walked quickly, arriving back at the inn in about half an hour. She took out her key, opened the side door, stepped inside, and bolted it behind her.

Perched on the roof, Xiao Yu watched Gu Fei go inside before leaping down and heading toward the Prince Qi Mansion.

After a few steps, Xiao Yu said to Stone, "Tomorrow, go tell Housekeeper Wu—on my authority—to stop causing trouble for Little Fei."

Stone shot his master a glance. "My lord, actually, about this matter... you don’t need to be in such a hurry."

Xiao Yu raised an eyebrow at him.

"Think about it. If I go and say something, Miss Xiao Fei will never know you’re the one helping her behind the scenes. Wouldn’t that be a complete waste of a golden opportunity?"

Xiao Yu remained expressionless. "Then what do you suggest?"

The corner of Stone’s mouth curled into a smug grin. "You wait for Miss Xiao Fei to come ask for your help, of course! Think about it: once she finds out Housekeeper Wu is the one pulling the strings, what other option does she have to resolve this besides coming to you?"

"When that time comes, the Young Master Heir can step in and help, and Miss Xiao Fei will naturally be endlessly grateful."

Xiao Yu snorted coldly. "I couldn’t care less about her gratitude."

Stone silently rolled his eyes. ’Young Master Heir, just keep telling yourself that.’

Sure enough, Xiao Yu had not taken two more steps before he spoke again. "Fine. Don’t tell Housekeeper Wu for now. I can’t be bothered with that girl’s affairs anyway."

The two of them hadn’t gone far when they saw Zhuzi crouching by the side of the street, looking miserable. The three horses were tied up nearby.

Upon seeing them, Zhuzi looked ready to cry with relief. "My lord, you’re finally back! Please don’t leave me behind next time."

Xiao Yu grunted, untied the reins, and mounted his horse. The three swift horses galloped straight for the Prince Mansion.
