Chapter 130: What If They Don’t Come Back?

Amelia turned to look at Sylvia, maybe to ask why she had called her that, but she couldn’t say anything.

A sharp ache spread through her head. She shut her eyes and winced in pain before darkness swallowed her.

She slumped back on the pillow.

Camila unlocked her phone immediately and dialed the number.

The call connected immediately.

"Hello, Miss Everton." The doctor’s voice came through the speaker.

"Come right away," she said and ended the call.

Sylvia sat beside Amelia as she watched her.

What have I done again?

The door burst open, and the doctor walked in quickly toward the bed.

"Check on her," Camila said, with worry written across her face.

The doctor immediately moved to Amelia’s side. "Give me some space."

Sylvia moved back slightly while the doctor checked Amelia’s pulse.

He placed two fingers against her wrist, then looked at the monitor beside the bed.

"What’s her current reading?" he asked the nurse who had followed him into the room.

"Blood pressure is stable, doctor. Her pulse is slightly elevated."

The doctor nodded and checked Amelia’s breathing before shining a small light into her eyes.

"Amelia, can you hear me?"

There was no response.

He moved the light from one eye to the other, watching her pupils carefully.

"Amelia, open your eyes."

She remained unconscious.

The doctor then checked her pulse again and placed his hand gently against her forehead. "She has fainted."

Camila frowned. "Why?"

The doctor looked at her. "She most likely pushed herself too hard trying to remember."

Sylvia looked at him. "Remember what?"

"Her memories," the doctor explained. "After an accident, especially one involving a strong impact to the head, the brain can temporarily have difficulty accessing certain memories. She already showed signs of memory loss when she woke up."

He glanced at Amelia.

"When she tried to force herself to remember, the pressure and stress may have triggered the sudden headache. The pain became intense enough to make her lose consciousness."

Sylvia’s face paled. "Is she going to be alright?"

The doctor nodded. "Her vital signs are stable, and I don’t see any immediate sign of deterioration. But she shouldn’t be pressured to remember anything."

Camila nodded. "So what should we do?"

"Let her rest. When she wakes up, don’t ask her questions about the accident or try to make her remember anything. If a memory comes back naturally, let it happen on its own."

The doctor looked at the nurse.

"Continue monitoring her. If her condition changes, inform me immediately."

"Yes, doctor."

The doctor checked Amelia’s pupils one more time before straightening.

"For now, she needs complete rest."

Sylvia looked at Amelia lying quietly on the bed. Her eyes remained closed, and her breathing had become calm again.

Sylvia gently reached for her hand and held it.

The doctor stepped away from the bed and looked at everyone in the room.

"She should remain calm when she wakes up. Too much stimulation could trigger another headache."

Camila nodded. "Understood."

The doctor turned to the nurse. "Keep monitoring her."

"Yes, doctor." The nurse adjusted the monitor before standing beside the bed.

The doctor gave Amelia one last look before walking toward the door.

Sylvia’s fingers remained wrapped around Amelia’s hand. She stared at their hands, her expression filled with guilt.

"I shouldn’t have called her babe," she whispered.

Daniela looked at her. "You didn’t know she would react like this."

"But she looked at me like she didn’t know me." Sylvia’s voice trembled. "And then she tried to remember."

Camila looked at Sylvia. "Don’t blame yourself. The doctor already said she shouldn’t force herself to remember."

Sylvia lowered her head.

"I know." She looked back at Amelia. "But she reached for my hand. "Her voice became quieter. "Even though she doesn’t remember me, she still reached for me."

Daniela placed a hand gently on Sylvia’s shoulder. "That means something."

Sylvia didn’t answer. She simply continued holding Amelia’s hand.

A few minutes passed.

The only sound in the room was the steady beeping of the monitor. Then Amelia’s fingers moved slightly.

Sylvia immediately noticed. "Amelia?"

Amelia’s eyebrows twitched. Her breathing changed, becoming slightly deeper.

The doctor, who had not gone far, turned back toward the bed. "Give her a moment."

Amelia slowly opened her eyes. The light above her made her blink. She stared at the ceiling for a few seconds before turning her head slightly. Her eyes landed on Sylvia.

Sylvia immediately leaned closer. "Amelia?"

Amelia stared at her. Her eyes looked confused.

"Why..." Her voice was barely audible.

Sylvia squeezed her hand gently. "What?"

Amelia frowned. "Why are you holding my hand?"

Sylvia froze. She slowly looked down at their joined hands before looking back at Amelia.

"Because..." She struggled to find the right words. "Because I care about you."

Amelia stared at her. The words seemed to confuse her even more.

Camila watched them silently.

The doctor stepped closer. "Amelia, don’t try to remember anything. Just relax."

Amelia closed her eyes. The headache was still there, but it wasn’t as painful as before.

She took a slow breath. "Okay."

The doctor nodded. "Good. That’s all you need to do."

Amelia opened her eyes again.

Her gaze moved around the room before settling on Sylvia once more.

She couldn’t remember her, but for some strange reason, she didn’t want her to let go of her hand.

Dominic glanced at the time on his phone before putting it back into his pocket.

He stood up from his seat and looked toward Amelia, who was still lying quietly on the bed.

"I’ll leave for now," he said.

Camila nodded.

Dominic looked at Amelia for a moment before turning to the others. "I’ll come over tomorrow."

Camila nodded. "Alright."

Dominic gave them a small smile before walking toward the door.

Cameron immediately followed him.

Sylvia remained beside Amelia, still holding her hand as the doctor continued monitoring her.

Dominic and Cameron walked out of the room, and the door closed quietly behind them.

The room became calmer.

The nurse checked the monitor one more time before stepping back.

"Her condition is stable," the doctor said. "Let her rest."

Camila nodded. "Thank you, doctor."

The doctor gave Amelia one last look before leaving with the nurse.

Sylvia remained beside the bed, still holding Amelia’s hand.

Amelia looked down at their hands. She could feel Sylvia’s warmth against her skin, but the person attached to that warmth was still a stranger to her. She slowly lifted her eyes. "Are you really related to me?"

Sylvia’s expression changed immediately. She shook her head.

"No."

Amelia frowned. "Then who are you?"

Sylvia hesitated before speaking. "I’m your girlfriend."

Amelia stared at her. "My... girlfriend?"

Sylvia nodded slowly.

Amelia’s lips parted, but no words came out.

Girlfriend.

The word felt strange. She looked at Sylvia’s face again, trying desperately to find something familiar.

Anything.

A memory. A moment. Even a small image.

But nothing came.

Her breathing slowly became uneven.

"I don’t remember you."

Sylvia’s eyes filled with sadness. "I know."

Amelia looked away. She suddenly felt frightened.

Not because Sylvia was a stranger, but because she was apparently someone important to her, and Amelia couldn’t remember loving her.

"What else don’t I remember?"

Camila looked at her. "Amelia..."

"What else?" Amelia asked again, her voice trembling.

She looked around the room. "Who else am I supposed to remember?"

No one answered immediately.

Amelia’s fingers tightened around the blanket. "What happened to me?"

"You were in an accident," Camila said gently.

"I know that. But what was my life like before it?" Her voice became smaller. "Who was I?"

Camila moved closer. "You are still you."

"But I don’t feel like myself." Amelia’s eyes became wet. She pressed a hand against her forehead. "I know my name. I know Camila. But there are so many things I should know, and they’re just..." She swallowed hard. "Gone."

Sylvia gently held her hand. "Don’t force yourself."

Amelia looked at her. "But what if they don’t come back?"

The question came out almost like a whisper.

Sylvia’s expression tightened.

Amelia’s fear grew as she spoke. "What if I forget everyone?" She looked toward Camila. "What if I forget you too?"

Camila’s eyes softened. "You won’t."

"But the doctor said I have memory loss." Her voice shook. "What if I wake up tomorrow and I don’t remember you?"

Camila couldn’t answer immediately.

Amelia looked down at her hands.

"What if I forget everything about my life? My friends... my family..." Her eyes moved slowly toward Sylvia. "...her?"

Sylvia’s fingers tightened around hers.

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears. "What if I never remember loving her?"

The room fell silent. That was the part that frightened her most.

She didn’t know Sylvia. Yet something inside her reacted whenever Sylvia came close, and that made everything even more confusing.

"I don’t want to lose things I can’t even remember," Amelia whispered.

Sylvia’s eyes reddened. "You won’t lose me."

Amelia looked at her. "You can’t promise that."

Sylvia went quiet.

Amelia swallowed. "What if my memories never come back?" Her breathing became shaky. "What am I supposed to do if I wake up one day and everyone around me is a stranger?"

Sylvia moved closer and gently squeezed her hand. "Then we’ll introduce ourselves again."

Amelia stared at her. "Again?"

"Every day if we have to."

A tear slipped down Amelia’s cheek. She quickly wiped it away. "I don’t want to forget. I don’t want to forget who I am."

Sylvia looked at her with a sad smile. "Then don’t try to force your memories back. Give yourself time."

Amelia lowered her gaze. She was still afraid.

Very afraid.

But Sylvia’s hand was still holding hers. She didn’t understand why that small touch made her feel slightly safer.

Her eyes slowly became heavy again. She looked at Sylvia one last time.

"Don’t leave."

Sylvia froze, and then she gave her a small smile. "I won’t."

Amelia closed her eyes. The fear was still there. She still didn’t know who she had been before the accident, what she had lost, or whether those memories would ever return.

But for now, she held onto the one thing that felt strangely familiar.

Sylvia’s hand.
