"Nothing." Camila answered and continued walking toward the door.

She did not explain herself or look back. She turned and walked toward the door; her footsteps were quiet against the hospital floor.

Sylvia watched her for a second, still standing close to Amelia’s bed. Her eyes moved back to Amelia’s face.

Amelia was still lying there quietly, her eyes closed. The machines beside her continued making soft sounds, filling the room with a steady rhythm that somehow made everything feel even more real. The sight of Amelia lying so still made Sylvia’s chest tighten again.

She swallowed the lump in her throat and followed Camila.

Sylvia walked out of the room, and the moment the door closed behind them, the sounds from inside became slightly quieter.

The hospital corridor was cold and bright. White lights stretched across the ceiling, shining down on the floor. The smell of medicine and disinfectant hung in the air.

Camila stopped after a few steps.

She did not immediately speak. Instead, she stood there with her back partly turned toward Sylvia, her hands resting at her sides.

Sylvia stopped too.

For a moment, neither of them said anything.

Camila slowly turned around and looked at Sylvia.

Her expression had changed. The serious look she had carried inside the room was still there, but there was something softer in her eyes now. She seemed to be choosing her words carefully.

"Please tell me what you said to Amelia when she came to see you." Her voice became softer. "I just want to know, please."

Sylvia’s fingers curled slightly at her sides.

The question made her heart ache immediately.

She knew exactly what Camila was asking about. She knew the answer before she even opened her mouth. The memory came back clearly, almost painfully.

Amelia had come to see her. She had wanted to talk to her, and she had pushed her away.

Sylvia swallowed hard. Her throat felt dry, and it suddenly became difficult to speak.

"I told her that she should stop calling me and leave me."

Sylvia lowered her eyes.

She stared at the floor between them, unable to look at Camila. Her heart felt heavy with guilt, even though she knew why she had said those words at the time.

She had been hurt. She had been angry and thought pushing Amelia away was the only thing she could do.

But now Amelia was lying in a hospital bed, and now she could not take those words back.

Camila looked away and nodded slowly.

She did not react with anger. She did not accuse Sylvia. She stood there quietly, her eyes fixed somewhere down the empty corridor.

Sylvia looked at her face for a moment before lowering her head again.

"I’m sorry," Sylvia said quietly. "I should have said that."

A nurse passed somewhere farther down the corridor, pushing a small medical cart. The wheels made a soft rolling sound before fading away.

Sylvia’s shoulders dropped.

She wished she could go back to that moment. She wished she could see Amelia again before everything had happened.

Maybe she would have spoken differently.

Maybe she would have allowed Amelia to explain herself.

Maybe she would not have been so angry.

But there was no going back.

Camila shook her head slowly.

"It’s not your fault, Sylvia. Anyone in your place would do that, so I don’t blame you for that."

Her voice was calm, but there was sadness behind it.

Sylvia remained silent. She knew Camila was trying to comfort her, but the guilt inside her did not disappear.

She lowered her head. Her eyes burned slightly as she stared at the floor.

The hospital corridor suddenly felt much longer than it really was. The bright lights above them seemed too harsh, and the cold air against her skin made her shiver faintly.

Camila watched her quietly.

She could see how much Sylvia was struggling. Sylvia looked exhausted. Her eyes were already red from crying, and her face had lost the little color it had earlier.

For a moment, Camila hesitated.

There was something else she needed to tell her. Something she had been holding back since she spoke to the doctor.

"But I have to tell you something?" Camila asked calmly.

Sylvia slowly raised her head. Her eyes met Camila’s.

There was something about Camila’s expression that immediately made Sylvia nervous.

The calmness in her voice did not make the words feel safe. If anything, it made Sylvia more afraid.

Sylvia’s fingers tightened against each other.

"What is that?" She asked slowly, afraid of what Camila was about to say.

Camila took a deep breath and looked away before looking back at Sylvia.

For a moment, her eyes moved toward the closed hospital room door.

Camila’s chest rose slowly as she breathed in.

"I spoke to the doctor in charge of Amelia’s condition, and he told me something I have to tell you before she wakes up."

Sylvia’s heart seemed to stop for a second.

The way Camila said it made fear spread through her body.

Sylvia stared at her.

"W... what is that?" She asked again immediately as her voice shook.

Camila did not answer right away.

She took another breath, as if trying to make the words easier to say. But there was no easy way to say them.

"Amelia might have amnesia," Camila said quietly.

Sylvia froze. For a moment, she did not understand what she had just heard.

She blinked. Her mind seemed to stop working properly.

"W...what? H...how?" Sylvia stammered as she blinked, processing what she had just had.

Her lips trembled as she stared at Camila.

Amelia might have amnesia.

The sentence repeated inside her head again and again.

It felt impossible.

Amelia is forgetting the people around her. Forgetting everything they had shared and forgetting about her.

The thought alone made Sylvia’s stomach twist.

Camila’s expression softened. She could see the shock spreading across Sylvia’s face.

"I just wanted to tell you that she might forget about any of us once she wakes up." Camila said, sounding a bit sad.

Sylvia’s eyes are because they sting. She blinked, but the tears escaped anyways and rolled down her eyes.

She tried to hold them back.

She really did.

But her eyes had already filled with tears, and no matter how many times she blinked, more slipped out.

One tear moved slowly down her cheek and then another.

Sylvia stood completely still.

She could hear the faint sound of the machines through the closed door behind them. Somewhere nearby, someone spoke quietly to a nurse. A door opened and closed.

But all those sounds felt far away.

The only thing she could hear clearly was Camila’s words.

She might forget about any of us.

Sylvia’s lips parted slightly and her chest tightened.

The thought of Amelia waking up and looking at her without knowing who she was was almost too painful to imagine.

What would happen if Amelia forgot her?

What would happen if Amelia looked at her like a stranger?

Sylvia’s tears continued falling. She did not wipe them away.

She could not.

Her hands hung weakly at her sides while her whole body seemed to become heavier.

Camila watched her for a moment.

She knew there was nothing she could say that would immediately make the pain disappear.

So she simply moved closer and patted Sylvia’s shoulder and walked back to the room.

Sylvia remained where she was. She stood there for a moment before leaning back against the wall.

The cold wall pressed against her back through her clothes.

She let her head rest against it. Her eyes remained fixed on the floor.

Why? She thought. Why must this be all happening in a day?

It had all happened too quickly.

One moment, she had been dealing with her own anger and heartbreak.

The next, Amelia had been in an accident.

And now this.

Amnesia.

The possibility that Amelia could wake up and not remember any of them.

Sylvia’s breathing became heavier. She closed her eyes and lowered her head.

Her chin moved toward her chest as she tried to control herself.

She did not want to cry loudly. She did not want anyone else to see her breaking down, but the tears were already coming.

They rolled down her cheeks and fell from her chin. One after another, they dropped onto the hospital floor.

She wiped one side of her face with the back of her hand, but still more tears came.

Her fingers trembled. She pressed her lips together, trying to keep the sob that was rising in her chest from escaping.

She shook her head as she remembered what Camila had just told her.

Sylvia opened her eyes and looked toward the room.

Sylvia stared at the door as if she could somehow see through it.

She imagined Amelia lying on the bed, still unconscious and unaware of everything happening around her.

Sylvia’s heart squeezed painfully.

She wanted Amelia to wake up, but now she was afraid of what would happen when she did.

Would Amelia remember her?

Would she remember their relationship?

Would she remember the time they had spent together?

Would she remember the way she had looked at Sylvia?

Would she remember how much she loved her?

Sylvia lowered her head again, and her tears continued falling.

She breathed in shakily, but the breath caught halfway.

She covered her mouth with her hand. She tried hard not to cry loudly.

Someone placed their hand on her shoulder, and she turned to look at the person.

The touch made Sylvia lift her head.

Her wet eyes met Daniela’s.

Daniela had returned to the corridor and was standing beside her. There was concern written clearly across her face.

She looked at Sylvia for a moment before speaking.

"Do you need a hug?" Daniela asked.

Sylvia stared at her. For a second, she could not answer.

Her throat was too tight, and then she nodded.

The small movement was all Daniela needed.

Sylvia immediately hugged her tightly, finally breaking down as a sob escaped her mouth.

The moment her arms wrapped around Daniela, the little control she had left disappeared.

She pressed her face against Daniela and cried.

Her shoulders shook. The sob that she had been trying so hard to hold back finally escaped.

She clung tightly to Daniela as if she needed something to keep her standing.

Daniela stayed there with her.

Sylvia’s tears soaked into the fabric beneath her face, but she did not care.

Nothing mattered to her at that moment except the pain in her chest.

She had tried to remain strong. She had tried to stay calm in front of everyone.

She had tried to convince herself that Amelia would wake up and everything would be fine.

But now she was scared.

So scared.

Her arms tightened around Daniela. She could barely breathe properly because of how hard she was crying.

The hospital lights continued shining above them.

The cold floor remained beneath their feet.

The distant sounds of footsteps and machines continued around them.

But Sylvia heard almost none of it.

All she could feel was the warmth of Daniela’s embrace and the tears running down her face.

She closed her eyes tightly. Her mind went back to Amelia.

Sylvia’s voice finally came out through her tears.

"Why will all this happen in a day?" She asked no one in particular.
