Falling For The True Heiress
Chapter 125: Your Girlfriend Is Here...
"I hope so." Mr. Winston said calmly, trying to keep his voice steady despite the fear sitting heavily in his chest. "Stop crying. Amelia won’t be happy if she sees you crying."
"I know, Dad," Sylvia said, still sobbing as she wiped the tears from her cheeks. "Which hospital is she in? Let me go and check on her."
"It’s already late, sweetie," Mr. Winston said gently. "Just go home. I’ll have Matt go over there and check if it’s true or not."
"No, Dad," Sylvia answered immediately. "I’m going."
She didn’t even need to think about it.
There was no way she could sit at home and pretend everything was fine while Amelia was possibly lying injured somewhere.
Her heart was already beating painfully against her chest.
"How can I go home when Amelia might be hurt?" Sylvia asked, her voice trembling. "I need to see her."
"I understand, but you shouldn’t drive when you’re this upset." Mr. Winston said worriedly. "You need to calm down first."
"I can drive, Dad," Sylvia insisted. "I just need to know where she is."
Mr. Winston sighed quietly. He knew there was no point trying to stop her now.
"Okay, fine," he finally said. "The hospital is Brighton Memorial Hospital. Just stay safe on your way there."
"Okay, Dad." Sylvia answered immediately and ended the call.
Sylvia lowered her phone slowly.
For a few seconds, she stood completely still. Her eyes remained fixed on the spot where Amelia had been standing earlier.
She could still remember the last conversation they had.
She could still remember Amelia leaving.
At that moment, Sylvia hadn’t thought anything would happen.
She had simply watched her leave.
Now, the memory made her heart ache.
How will I bear to go home when I know something happened to Amelia?
She shook her head and quickly wiped her tears.
"No," she whispered to herself. "I won’t think about anything bad."
She turned around and immediately started walking toward the stairs. Then she began running.
Her footsteps echoed through the house as she rushed upstairs.
She nearly missed a step but quickly caught herself against the railing.
She didn’t care.
All she could think about was Amelia.
"Please be safe for me, babe," Sylvia whispered as she hurried down the hallway. "I’m coming for you."
She reached her bedroom and pushed the door open.
The room was quiet. The soft light from the hallway entered through the open doorway, stretching across the floor.
Sylvia didn’t bother turning on the light.
She walked straight toward her drawer and pulled it open.
Her fingers searched through the things inside.
"Where are my keys?"
She moved a few items aside. Her breathing became faster.
"Come on..."
She searched again. Then her fingers finally touched the familiar metal.
"There."
She grabbed the keys immediately. She pushed the drawer shut, turned around, and walked toward the door.
She stepped out and pulled it closed behind her. Then she hurried down the stairs again.
When she reached the front door, she pushed it open. The cool night air touched her face.
She pressed the button on her key fob. Her car, which Venny had been maintaining for her, responded with three sharp beeps.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Sylvia hurried toward it. She pulled the driver’s door open and got inside.
She shut the door and immediately placed her hands on the steering wheel.
They were shaking. She stared through the windshield.
For a moment, she couldn’t move. Her mind kept showing her Amelia’s face.
Her smile. Her voice. The way she always complained whenever Sylvia annoyed her.
Sylvia closed her eyes.
"Please be okay."
She took a deep breath and started the engine.
The car came to life. Sylvia pressed the gate remote that was in her car, and immediately the gate opened.
She pulled out of the compound and pressed the remote again, and the gate closed before she drove onto the main road.
The moment she reached the open road, she pressed her foot against the accelerator, and the car sped forward.
She knew Brighton Memorial Hospital.
She didn’t need anyone to guide her. All she needed was to get there.
"Please don’t let anything happen to her." Sylvia whispered as she stared at the road ahead. "Please."
Her eyes became blurry again. She quickly blinked the tears away.
Cars moved along the road around her. Sylvia kept checking the road ahead while her fingers remained tightly wrapped around the steering wheel.
Every second felt too slow.
"Why is this taking so long?"
She glanced at the time. Only a few minutes had passed.
It felt like an hour.
She pressed harder on the accelerator. The car moved faster.
She passed one car and then another.
Her heart was beating so fast that she could hear it in her ears.
What if it’s true?
What if—
"No." Sylvia shook her head. "I won’t think like that."
She focused on the road again and continued driving.
The streets gradually became more familiar.
Finally, the large sign of Brighton Memorial Hospital appeared ahead.
Sylvia’s heart jumped.
"There."
She immediately turned into the hospital entrance. She drove into the parking lot and quickly searched for an empty space.
She found one and parked. She switched off the engine and reached for the door.
She pushed it open and stepped out.
After closing the door, she immediately pulled out her phone.
Her fingers moved quickly across the screen.
She searched through her contacts and found her father’s number.
She pressed the call button.
"Ring."
"Ring."
The call was answered almost immediately.
"Hello, Dad," Sylvia said immediately. "What’s the room number?"
"I’ll call Mr. Halcyon and ask," Mr. Winston replied. "Just give me some minutes."
"Okay," Sylvia answered.
She ended the call.
She looked toward the hospital entrance. The large glass doors opened and closed as people moved in and out.
Bright white lights filled the building.
Nurses hurried through the hallways. A man pushed a wheelchair toward the reception area.
Somewhere nearby, a child was crying.
But Sylvia barely noticed any of it. Her attention was fixed on her phone.
She needed the room number. She needed to find Amelia.
A few minutes later, her phone began ringing.
Sylvia immediately answered.
"Yeah, Dad."
"Room 1126," Mr. Winston said quietly.
"Okay," Sylvia replied quickly. "Thanks, Dad."
She ended the call.
Then she ran. She rushed toward the hospital entrance, and the automatic doors opened in front of her.
She ran inside, breathing heavily.
The cool air from the air conditioner hit her face.
She looked around quickly before running toward the reception counter.
Several nurses were seated behind it.
"Please, nurse," Sylvia said breathlessly. "Where’s room 1126?"
One of the nurses looked up at her.
"Take that way." The nurse said, pointing toward the left hallway.
Sylvia followed the direction with her eyes.
"Thank you."
She immediately turned and ran.
Her footsteps echoed through the hallway.
She looked at the numbers on each door.
"1123..."
She kept running.
"1124..."
Her breathing became heavier.
"1125..."
She stopped.
The next door was right in front of her.
1126.
Her heart suddenly began pounding even harder.
She stared at the door. For a moment, she was afraid to open it.
What if what she saw inside was worse than what she had imagined?
She swallowed.
"No." She reached for the handle. "I need to know."
She pushed the door open.
The first thing Sylvia noticed was the man sitting beside the hospital bed.
Her eyes widened.
"Dominic?"
Dominic turned his head toward her.
He looked at her for a moment before turning his gaze back toward the person lying on the bed.
"Your sister had an accident," Dominic said calmly.
Sylvia blinked.
Her eyes slowly moved toward the bed.
She saw the pale face, the bandage, the oxygen tube, and the wires connected to the machines.
Her heart stopped.
"No." She took a step forward. "Don’t tell me that’s..."
"Yes," Dominic interrupted gently. "She’s the one."
Sylvia’s legs suddenly became weak. She rushed toward the bed and dropped to her knees.
"Amelia..." Her voice broke.
She reached for Amelia’s hand. It felt cold against her fingers.
Sylvia stared at Amelia’s face.
The person who always looked so lively was now lying completely still.
Her eyes were closed. Her lips were slightly parted beneath the oxygen tube.
The monitor beside her continued to beep.
The sound was steady. It was the only thing reminding Sylvia that Amelia was still there.
Sylvia swallowed hard.
"H... how did this happen?" She asked, looking up at Dominic through her tears.
Dominic shook his head.
"I don’t actually know how it happened."
Sylvia looked back at Amelia. She crawled closer to the bed and carefully held her hand with both of hers.
"Amelia..." Her voice trembled. "Please..."
She shook her head.
This couldn’t be real.
It couldn’t be happening.
"I’m sorry," Sylvia cried out. "I should have gone with you."
Her tears began falling faster.
"I’m sorry, Minnie."
She lowered her head and rested it against Amelia’s hand. Her tears soaked Amelia’s fingers.
"I’m sorry." Her shoulders shook as she cried. "I should have gone with you."
She remembered the moment Amelia left. She remembered allowing her to walk away.
She remembered thinking there was nothing to worry about.
And now she wished she could go back.
"I shouldn’t have let you leave alone," Sylvia whispered. "I should have stopped you."
Dominic remained silent.
He watched her cry. There was nothing he could say that would make the situation disappear.
Sylvia tightened her grip around Amelia’s hand.
"Please wake up." She lifted her head slightly. "Please, Minnie."
Her voice broke again.
"You can’t leave me." She looked at Amelia’s closed eyes. "You can’t leave me all alone."
Dominic looked at Sylvia, and then he looked at Amelia.
"Amelia, wake up," he said calmly. "Your girlfriend is here."
Sylvia slowly lifted her head. She stared at Dominic in surprise.
"You already know?"
Dominic gave her a small smile.
"I’m not blind, you know?" he said. "I already knew from the first day I met you."
Sylvia stared at him. She didn’t know what to say. Her eyes moved back to Amelia.
Dominic leaned back slightly in his chair.
"Don’t worry," he said quietly. "She’s fine. She’ll wake up anytime soon."
Sylvia looked at Amelia again. "Anytime soon?"
"Yes," Dominic replied.
Sylvia nodded slowly.
She wanted to believe him. She needed to believe him.
Her fingers gently moved over Amelia’s hand.
"Please wake up, Minnie." She whispered.
She looked at Amelia’s face.
"You still owe me an argument." A weak laugh escaped her through her tears, but it quickly turned into another sob. "You can’t just sleep through everything."
Amelia remained still as the monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Sylvia stared at her.
Then her phone suddenly started vibrating in her hand.
She looked down, and the screen lit up.
Daniela.
Sylvia wiped her tears with her free hand before swiping to answer.
She brought the phone to her ear.
"Hello?"
"Where’s Amelia?" Daniela asked immediately, her voice filled with worry. "We’ve been trying to reach her, but it wasn’t connecting."
Sylvia looked toward Amelia.
The oxygen tube was still beneath her nose.
The machine beside the bed continued beeping.
Sylvia swallowed hard.
"She’s in the hospital," she answered quietly.
"Is she with her dad?" Daniela asked, sounding slightly relieved. "Tell her we’re coming over."
"No," Sylvia said quietly.
She paused. Her eyes remained fixed on Amelia.
"No, what?" Daniela asked slowly.
Sylvia swallowed hard before continuing.
"She had an accident."
