F-Rank Awakening: My System Turns Trash Skills To SSS-RANK
Chapter 55: No ordinary Kid
From his vantage point on the high ledge, Rain watched the desperate chaos unfolding in the flooded basin below.
A flare lay sputtering in six inches of stagnant water near the center of the chamber, its dying crimson glare casting long, frantic shadows against the concrete walls. Fifty yards away, two figures shifted through the dark, their boots kicking up heavy sprays of crimson-tinged water as they circled a massive, hulking shape.
Holt lunged forward, his heavy iron broadsword sweeping through the air in a broad, brutal arc. A dense grey sheen suddenly flared along the hunter’s forearms and blade, his physical reinforcement skill hardening skin and steel alike into something resembling solid granite. The broadsword slammed into the monster’s left flank with a dull, concussive thud that echoed through the vaulted ceiling.
The strike barely forced the creature to yield a single inch.
The abomination spun with terrifying, fluid speed, its elongated arm whipping through the air like a heavy log. Holt brought his broadsword up in a desperate two-handed block. The grey sheen on his arms flashed brightly under the impact, but the sheer kinetic force knocked him off his feet, sending him skidding six yards across the flooded floor before slamming hard into the base of a concrete support pillar.
"Holt!" Fen shrieked from the left flank.
The lean hunter moved in a sudden, violent blur, his legs snapping forward as his burst-speed skill activated, leaving a faint streak of distorted air behind him. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, his twin daggers stabbing straight toward the joint beneath the creature’s shoulder. Both blades struck, sparks showering into the water, but the point of entry immediately seized around the steel like wet clay, pinching the metal tight.
"Get off me!" Fen yelled, his voice cracking with pure panic. He abandoned one dagger entirely, triggering another sudden blur in his legs to vault backward just as a pale, multi-jointed claw swept through the space his chest had occupied a millisecond prior.
"Watch the sweep!" Holt roared, scrambling back to his feet while coughing up a spray of dark blood. "Don’t let it corner you against the wall!"
"I can’t pierce the outer hide!" Fen shouted back, his chest heaving as he circled wide, his single remaining dagger trembling in his grip. "My strikes are bouncing off! Holt, we’re out of stamina! We can’t keep this up!"
Rain leaned against the stone railing of the high ledge, his blue eyes tracking every shift in their footwork, every desperate breath, every mistimed swing.
The realization settled in his chest with cold, absolute clarity.
Holt and Fen were D-rank hunters with years of field experience, equipped with guild-issued steel and trained skills. Yet, watching them from above, Rain saw no synergy, no tactical foresight, and no calm adaptation. They were fighting purely on instinct and raw stamina, relying on Holt’s raw durability to absorb blows while Fen looked for opportunistic flank strikes. Against standard rift beasts, that crude division of labor worked.
Against an opponent of this caliber, it was a slow, bloody execution.
Rain turned away from the edge and made his way down the steep stone steps leading off the ledge, his boots striking the wet steps in a quiet, controlled rhythm. He rounded the ruined iron door frame at the base of the stairwell and walked straight toward the shadows along the edge of the chamber.
Peter was crouched against the damp wall, his hands tightly gripping the straps of a heavy canvas bag. Beside him sat Priya, slumped against a stack of rusted iron pipes. Her leather armor was shredded at the ribs, a makeshift bandage soaked with blood wrapped tightly around her midsection. Her heavy composite bow lay uselessly in the mud beside her hand, the bowstring snapped and dangling.
Peter looked up as Rain approached. "Rain," he breathed, his voice barely audible over the roaring impacts fifty yards away. "You’re alive. How are you alive?"
Rain ignored the question, stepping past Peter to kneel in the shallow water beside Priya. His gaze locked onto her face. "How bad is it?"
Priya raised her head slowly, her face pale, a thin trickle of dark blood drying at the corner of her mouth. She took a shallow, painful breath before looking Rain up and down, taking in his shredded hoodie, his bruised chest, and the blood drying on his bare hands.
"You need to get out," Priya said directly, her tone cold, pragmatic, and devoid of any heat. "Both of you. Take Peter and run back up the conduit while that thing is distracted."
"Priya," Peter started.
"Shut up, Peter," she snapped, wincing as the movement pulled at her wounded side. She turned her eyes back to Rain. "You’re academy kids. You’re carriers. You aren’t hunters, and I’m not dying with your blood on my conscience. Get out."
Rain kept his posture grounded, his eyes calm. "I can’t do that."
Priya let out a harsh, wet laugh that turned into a short cough. "You can’t do that? What do you think you’re going to do instead? Stand there and cheer?"
She gestured with a trembling hand toward the center of the flooded pit, where Holt was currently being forced backward by a relentless barrage of heavy strikes.
"Look at them, Rain," Priya said, her voice dropping into a heavy, serious register. "That thing is the rift’s boss. In all the months I’ve raided with Holt, I have never seen him struggle like this against anything D-rank. Not once. He’s a veteran. He has physical reinforcement skills, heavy steel, and years of experience, and he’s getting torn apart. I’m hurt. I can’t shoot. My bowstring is snapped, and my ribs are crushed."
She leaned closer, her eyes locking onto his. "If we stay here, we’re screwed. It’s that simple. Grab whatever cores Peter picked up from the upper tunnels and leave while you still have two legs that work. You fell into a collapsing sublevel and somehow crawled back out. That’s a miracle. Don’t push your luck twice in one night, kid"
Rain stood up slowly, looking past her toward the center of the chamber.
Her words hung in the cold air, forcing him to confront the stark reality of the situation. Holt was a fully registered D-rank hunter. He possessed high levels of physical strength, formal guild training, and iron gear. If a veteran like Holt was being battered into the mud, what chance did a lone, unranked student with forty-two health and a single potion stand? Was he overestimating himself because he had managed to trick three skeletal Gravewrights in a narrow tunnel? Was his ambition blinding him to a death that would leave him forgotten in a dark sewer pit?
He closed his eyes for a single beat, letting the cold air settle in his lungs.
He remembered the C-rank rift he had survived weeks ago, the terror, the chaos, the feeling of being completely helpless as the world collapsed around him. He didn’t know how this monstrosity fully compared to the horrors of that rift, but he knew one thing with absolute certainty: his system was still active. The hidden mission objective was still pulsing in the dark corners of his mind. If he turned his back now, if he ran away like a frightened carrier, he would remain an unranked nobody at the bottom of the ladder forever. But if he stood his ground and killed a C-rank boss, the rewards, the experience, and the growth would elevate him beyond anything the academy could ever offer.
Rain opened his eyes. The hesitation was gone, replaced by a quiet, sharp certainty.
He looked down at Priya, a faint, dry smile touching the corner of his lips.
"Nah," Rain said, his voice quiet and firm. "I’m clearing this whole damn place."
He turned on his heel and exploded into a full sprint toward the center of the chamber.
As Rain closed the distance, the full, grotesque majesty of the Husk Regent materialized through the dim light of the burning flare.
It stood nearly nine feet tall, a terrifying amalgamation of fused tissue and stolen limbs. Its overall frame was vaguely humanoid, but horribly proportioned, its lower torso impossibly narrow, supported by long, multi-jointed legs, while its massive shoulders spread five feet wide. Its body was a chaotic patchwork of fused calcified plates, pale bone, dark chitin, and leathery grey hide, all stitched together by thick, corded strands of black, fibrous tissue that pulsed with an unholy, rhythmic life. It possessed no proper face; across the smooth, bone-like dome of its skull stretched a wide, vertical band of flesh lined with a dozen small, lidless eyes of varying sizes and colors, some cold grey like a fish, others burning with a faint, predatory yellow.
The creature raised both massive arms, preparing to bring them down like twin pile-drivers onto Holt, who was braced on one knee in the shallow water.
Rain didn’t hesitate. He launched himself off the wet concrete, rising three feet into the air. He cocked his right arm back, channeling every ounce of his Strength into his right fist, and drove his knuckles directly into the left side of the creature’s jawless face plate.
The heavy physical impact sounded like a cannon shot echoing through the vault.
The sheer kinetic force forced the nine-foot beast’s head to snap violently to the right, its massive body staggering three full paces sideways, its heavy feet splashing wildly through the water.
Rain landed smoothly on both feet in four inches of water, dropping into a low, agile stance.
Holt looked up from the water, his jaw dropping as his eyes locked onto the grey hoodie, the blood-soaked pants, and the bright blue eyes of the carrier he had left behind in the collapsing tunnel.
"What, Rain?!" Holt roared, his voice a mix of disbelief, anger, and absolute shock. "You’re alive?! Get the hell back! What are you doing?!"
"Get out of the way, kid!" Fen screamed from the left, clutching his chest as he backed away. "It’ll squash you in one hit!"
Rain kept his eyes locked firmly on the recovering abomination, his stance balanced and ready. "Can’t do that," he shouted back over the splashing water. "This one’s mine!"
