Chapter 302: Bomb
Chapter 302: Bomb
Malakai ignored the entire thing entirely, he didn’t even bother to ask who the man was. Rather, his eyes wandered around the party.
“Let’s try to find out what the Fourth Pulse and Tendrix plans on doing first,” Malakai whispered to Nyx.
“Yes.”
They blended into the party, grabbing two glasses from a waiter. Since Whiteshade was a well known figure, they had deemed it important to move without him.
They needed time to think without different people wanting to come introduce themselves to the Third Fleshling.
Regardless, moving through the crowd, they had still been approached by multiple people. The thought people had, and it had taken a moment for Malakai to grasp it, was that this party was invite only.
What it meant was simple: only the important people of the district and city had been invited to attend. Even if their names and faces were unknown, it was expected that they would be important, one way or another.
Malakai had evaded most people as best as he could, and had been surprised when he received brazen gestures from women who were apparently attracted to him.
Nyx’s icy stare and mama bear aura was enough to send them running, but Malakai’s frustration only grew as the night went.
’I still can’t find anything.’
He glanced towards Whiteshade and saw that he was busy speaking with a small crowd of men and women. Malakai sighed as he had to avoid another approach.
’I can’t think like this.’
“Let’s dance,” he said to Nyx, whose eyes almost popped from their sockets. Her? Dance?
But Malakai hadn’t been asking. He grabbed her hand and took her to the dance floor. Luckily, a slow song had started playing.
Nyx surrendered herself and let Malakai lead. She had never danced before. As she crossed both arms around his neck and he placed his hand on her lower back, they began moving.
Nyx couldn’t hide her blush. It was the first time she’d ever been so close for several moments with Malakai.
’He smells nice.’ She couldn’t help but think. Her eyes were lowered and she refused to meet his.
“Look at me.”
She was taken aback but forced herself to follow the order. She raised her head, and as their crimson eyes locked, the party seemed to vanish.
“Try to smile.”
Nyx didn’t try, a smile formed on her face before she could even realize. Dancing… she loved it.
It was Malakai’s turn to be taken aback. Though it was not her actual face, it was still the first time he would see Nyx smile. It was… beautiful.
Malakai cleared his thoughts and brought himself back to the matter at hand. “Have you found anything yet?”
He whispered, making sure no one heard him. Nyx shook her head and Malakai frowned.
He’d come onto the dancing stage to avoid the randoms trying to speak to them, and now that he’d gotten his space, he didn’t know what to do.
’Should I raise the alarm?’
Doing that would end the party right then and there, but that didn’t mean the threat was over. They could have infiltrated the mansion already for all he knew.
’What do I do?’
Malakai’s mind ran faster than ever. And just when he was about to sigh, his eyes caught something. No, someone.
’What is she doing here?’
A woman had just entered the courtyard. She was clad in the same maid attire the other attendants wore, but that wasn’t what grabbed his attention. It was the woman herself, who she was.
’Karla.’
Malakai had already begun acting before he could even realize. He directed their dancing towards the edge of the stage before expertly getting off without drawing attention.
Nyx’s confusion was immediately cleared the moment she saw Karla, and as they approached, their eyes soon found Unoa not far away from her.
His narrowed eyes were trained on him and Nyx as they approached Karla.
Karla bowed the moment he reached, clearly not recognizing his disguise. Malakai dropped his empty glass on the tray she held and carried another.
“Blood remembers what names forget.”
Karla’s eyes widened the moment she heard those words. That voice… and their code words.
’Ninth Vein!’ she realized, and fought to maintain her composure.
Malakai had already walked away, but not back into the party, through a door by their side, the same they had used to enter.
Karla signaled to Unoa, and after making sure they weren’t followed, they followed behind Malakai.
“Ninth Vein.”
Karla and Unoa sank to one knee the moment they reached Malakai. They’d found a dark hallway corner to talk. It was good that the mansion’s focus was entirely on the party.
“What are you doing here?”
“I heard you might be attending this party. We have something urgent to tell you.”
Malakai narrowed his eyes and gestured for her to continue. Karla quickly narrated everything she’d seen and experienced the past couple of days.
And the instant he heard the words, cake and blow up, a shudder couldn’t help but run down his spine. He glanced to the side to see a frown appear on Nyx’s face.
“The music has stopped.”
Malakai’s eyes blew wide. They always brought in the cake at the end of the party!
“We have to get to the clan head.”
He’d begun moving before his words dropped, blasting through the hallway. At this point, he had let go of all restraints.
Nyx chose to maintain the same pace as him, intending on protecting him. And Karla and Unoa struggled to keep up from behind.
’Please let me be wrong.’
Malakai truly hoped. The Sutrex had a few Blooms on hand, either hired or a member of the clan. A handful of elders, along with the clan head, were Blooms.
But this wasn’t Malakai’s focus. It was the bomb. If the target of this attack was the clan head, then that bomb had to be effective against Blooms.
Blooms were powerhouses, weapons of mass destruction. But as they were dangerous, the people of the Dome had long since created multiple ways of killing them. One was through a Clausebane.
And as another method crept into Malakai’s mind, he found his heart beating fast. If that bomb was what he thought it was, then not even Blooms stood any chance.
They reached the door to the courtyard and immediately opened it.
“Ninth Ve—!”
Malakai ignored a startled Whiteshade. He must have seen them going away earlier and come to find them.
He burst into the courtyard, startling the people nearby. But it did nothing to stop the unfolding scene.
As his gaze swept the area and he saw the scene, his heart almost stopped. A young Sutrex boy, clearly the celebrant, held a large knife, and was cutting down through the cake.
Then, a beep reached Malakai’s ears, and the world turned white.
