Chapter 142: Chapter 116: Imperial Capital Wu Yue

Old Bai also sneered. "He said he has no mind for marriage right now and only yearns for peace—what a pretentious act!"

Old Bai shook his head frantically. "A brilliant young talent like General Wu is out of our league. My daughter just goes over to ask for advice. She’s still young, has no mind for marriage, and only yearns for peace..."

The exact same words applied to both of them, but to everyone listening, the feeling was completely different. The crowd burst into laughter.

"We know, we know! Later on, when our Bai Yu also becomes a general, just watch me pick out a flawless son-in-law for you!"

"You really know how to raise a child, Old Bai! So clear-headed! As for General Wu’s family..."

Everyone clicked their tongues and shook their heads. The rest went without saying.

Meanwhile, Wu Yue flicked his lighter. Cigarette in hand, he walked quietly into the garden. During this recent mission in the Wilderness, the young people from various families had made great contributions. Several families had jointly organized this celebration banquet, and Wu Yue was naturally among the invited guests.

However, this crowd only ever spouted bureaucratic nonsense and said meaningless things all day. He had even had to apologize to several of them on his mother’s behalf. Their passive-aggressive remarks back then had truly left him feeling stifled. Attending the banquet now, his mood was inevitably a bit foul.

Especially because of that girl surnamed Bai from next door...

To be honest, Bai Yu wasn’t bad-looking. Her short hair gave her an energetic look, but she just didn’t seem like a proper lady. She completely lacked the delicate frailty expected of a girl. She often hovered around him, and Wu Yue was naturally well aware of her little ulterior motives.

Yet, when facing her, Wu Yue felt incredibly uncomfortable. Who told him to be burdened with such a mother? To this day, he still owed her family a massive amount of Contribution Points. Aunt Wang was likely trying to social-climb and had intentionally lent his mother another 5,000 points... His salary was high, sure, but it couldn’t outpace this kind of mounting debt!

He took a drag of his cigarette, silently calculating. He planned to make another trip to the Wilderness this year. Otherwise, without the mission bonuses from the Wilderness, it would take forever and a day to pay off this debt—especially since it kept piling up.

And his mother... why couldn’t she be a little more considerate of her son’s hardships?

As he pondered this, Wu Yue suddenly spun around, demanding warily, "Who’s there?!"

A familiar figure slowly stepped out from behind a tree. It was none other than Aunt Wang’s daughter from next door—Bai Yu, the same girl who always hung around him under the guise of asking for advice.

Wu Yue furrowed his brow, unable to suppress another surge of annoyance. Ever since his promotion—or more accurately, even before it—there were simply too many women swarming around him like this. But remembering that he had just been exchanging pleasantries with her father, he took a deep breath, trying his best to suppress his impatience.

"Why are you following me?"

The girl’s face instantly flushed red. She clenched her fists tightly, looking incredibly nervous. This softened his heart a little. After all, she was a young and beautiful girl, though a faint scar was still visible on her face. He wasn’t the type to only care about appearances, especially since she had genuinely fought in real combat...

Was it a bit too cruel to treat her like this?

With that thought, he couldn’t help but soften his tone. "I’m sorry, did I frighten you?"

He stepped toward Bai Yu, but she quickly shrank back like a startled deer in the woods. After a long moment, she clenched her fists and stammered nervously, "I-I have something to do. I’m leaving."

With that, she darted into the hall like a gust of wind, her movements exceptionally agile. Watching her retreating figure, Wu Yue chuckled for some inexplicable reason. But as soon as he remembered the tangled mess of debt between his mother and Aunt Wang, a headache began to pulse at his temples.

Later, after the banquet ended, Bai Yu barely managed to endure the car ride home. The second she stepped inside the house, she sprinted upstairs to her bedroom, grabbed a pillow, and began violently thrashing it against the bed.

"Psycho!

"Disgusting!

"Creep!

"Narcissist!

"Such a sleaze!"

"Bai Yu," her mother said, stepping up to lightly tap on the unclosed bedroom door. "Keep your voice down. You’ve been promoted now; you can’t keep losing your composure like this."

Bai Yu angrily threw the pillow onto the bed and plopped down heavily before gritting her teeth. "How am I losing my composure? I held it in for over an hour at the banquet. I have amazing composure!"

She stood back up and paced in two tight circles, huffing. "Sometimes I really hate myself. I endure way too much just for the sake of the bigger picture! I should have slapped his stupid pig face to a pulp right then and there!"

What a piece of trash!

This state of agitation had become a frequent occurrence ever since her daughter started asking for advice from Wu Yue. Her mother was somewhat used to it by now and maintained her gentle, soothing tone.
