Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking
Chapter 245: Let Beverly Lynch See Those Two Hook Up With Her Own Eyes
Isn’t he supposed to be a business prodigy? We’re this far into the story, so shouldn’t he have built up his own power by now? How is he still getting casually crushed by Beverly Lynch? He’s such a loser.
Who’s to blame for that? First, Pauline Shaw didn’t give him any support, and then Caleb Lowell came down on him like a ton of bricks. Did he even have a chance to grow?
I knew I shouldn’t have enabled the mind-reading feature. And Jane Lancaster, too—why reveal only half the plot?
LMAO, and you’re blaming Jane Lancaster for this? She doesn’t even know people can hear her thoughts.
If you have to blame someone, blame him for not being good enough. He couldn’t even trick Pauline Shaw out of her resources, so he couldn’t get anywhere. If that’s not a loser, what is?
This is so painful to watch. I’m thinking of unstanning. Gordon Dawson’s prestige just keeps dropping.
What’s with Jane Lancaster? Wasn’t she supposed to seduce him? Is she just giving up on her mission?
——
Late at night, once Gordon Dawson was fast asleep, Pauline Shaw secretly picked up his phone and used his thumb to unlock it.
She had always despised women who secretly checked their partners’ phones, seeing it as a sign of insecurity and a lack of respect for her lover.
But Gordon Dawson had been acting too strangely recently. She couldn’t help but suspect he was cheating on her.
The call history and his messages seemed fine. After a moment’s thought, she went to his photo gallery.
Her finger paused as she swiped to a certain photo, and her eyes widened in disbelief.
——
The next day, Gordon Dawson woke up from his hangover, still feeling deeply resentful that he had been played like that.
At the breakfast table, while he was still thinking about Jane Lancaster, Pauline Shaw suddenly spoke up. "What’s the deal with that photo?"
"What?" Gordon Dawson asked.
"I saw everything." Pauline Shaw put down her bowl and chopsticks, her expression serious. "Jane Lancaster... has she been cozying up to Shawn Sutton?"
Pauline Shaw was still in shock at Jane Lancaster’s audacity. She couldn’t believe she had actually gotten together with Shawn Sutton.
She was certain there were no real feelings involved; Jane was likely just using him as a substitute to anger her cousin and, in the process, step on Beverly Lynch.
The last time they’d spoken, she had told Beverly Lynch about Jane Lancaster bribing Willow Summers, but the two of them still hadn’t had a falling out.
Pauline Shaw was getting anxious on her behalf. Why wouldn’t she believe her? It made her feel like she was being a petty schemer for nothing.
"Tell me, what if I find an opportunity, set a trap, and make Beverly Lynch see those two hooking up with her own eyes?"
Seeing is believing. She refused to believe Beverly Lynch would still doubt her words after that.
Gordon Dawson was stunned for a long moment. He gave Pauline Shaw a long, hard look.
’I can’t believe she’s this stupid,’ he thought. ’She suspects Jane Lancaster is hooking up with Shawn Sutton, but doesn’t suspect her own boyfriend at all.’
Pauline Shaw felt a little uneasy. "Do you think it’s a bad idea? I didn’t realize the investor behind that company was Beverly Lynch. She must have rejected you guys because she has a problem with me. If I can change her impression of me, maybe you can still land this project..."
"If you want to do it, then do it. I support you," Gordon Dawson said.
He almost died laughing. ’Talk about a wish being granted.’ Jane Lancaster was about to be in for a world of hurt.
After a pause, Gordon Dawson smiled and said, "But you’re too straightforward and you’re too soft-hearted. Why don’t you let me help you?"
’If she dares to provoke me,’ he thought, ’she shouldn’t expect to get away unscathed.’
’This time, I’m going to mess with her so bad she’ll never be able to get rid of me.’
——
Jane Lancaster had just gotten out of class that day when she received a call from Julian Lancaster.
"Julian, what’s up?" she asked, feigning ignorance.
She hadn’t gone home for the past two days, staying once again in a villa at The Crestwood Hotel.
Things weren’t going well for The Lancaster Family, however. Although the online buzz had eventually been squashed, The Lancaster Group’s stock had lost a significant amount of its market value, and as president, Julian Lancaster would be the first one held accountable by the board of directors.
Julian Lancaster’s voice was as steady as ever. "Jay, there’s a banquet tonight. I’m afraid I’ll have to trouble you to make an appearance."
Jane Lancaster replied, "What kind of banquet is so important that I have to attend? I have to study."
Julian Lancaster fell silent. She was asking even though she already knew the answer.
Right now, rumors were flying everywhere. Some rag of a gossip outlet was spouting nonsense, saying Jane Lancaster had been kicked out of the family.
If they didn’t crush this rumor now, the company’s stock price would probably fall even further.
In the end, Julian Lancaster just hung up the phone.
A moment later, Jane Lancaster’s phone went DING. She picked it up and saw that Julian Lancaster had transferred her two million, with the note "Wardrobe allowance."
Jane Lancaster quickly changed her mind. If that was the case, she supposed she could reluctantly deign to attend.
——
That night’s banquet was held at a manor in the suburbs.
The manor had a long history. It was a vineyard estate that hosted an annual wine-tasting gala.
It wasn’t that Jane Lancaster had never attended the wine-tasting gala before, but in previous years, she had come with Timothy Lancaster. Since she was a minor, she wasn’t allowed to drink and didn’t really participate.
But now she was an adult, so naturally, she would be seated at the main table to appreciate the red wine.
The host of the banquet had also thoughtfully provided rooms for each distinguished guest, so no one would have to drive down the mountain drunk late at night. They could simply rest easy and sleep it off.
"Jane Lancaster?" It was only after a friend pointed it out that Shawn Sutton realized Jane Lancaster was among the distinguished guests on the second floor.
Since they had run into each other, he went up to say hello to her.
"What a coincidence, you’re here too." He paused, then explained, "A friend and I were brought here by someone."
Though he also found it strange. Why had their host suddenly wanted to bring him along? Wouldn’t it have been better for his friend and their host to have some private time together?
But since there was an opportunity to network, he didn’t want to pass it up.
Shawn Sutton’s expression was composed. He’d said he was just coming to say hello, but after doing so, he didn’t leave.
The main issue was that at this kind of banquet, he wasn’t an honored guest invited by the host, but someone who’d tagged along for the free wine. Few people were willing to pay them any mind.
Shawn Sutton felt a little awkward. Back when he was with Beverly Lynch, although some people mocked him for being a kept man, Beverly Lynch was never one to put up with nonsense and would shut down anyone who dared to run their mouth.
So no one ever dared to truly slight him, for fear of offending Beverly Lynch.
Now, even after scheming his way into the banquet, he was completely ignored and given the cold shoulder.
"You don’t mind if I sit here for a bit, do you?" he asked.
"Suit yourself," Jane Lancaster said, lowering her gaze to her phone without another thought for him.
’Something’s not right. Ever since I entered the party, I’ve felt a strange pair of eyes on me.’
The feeling of being watched was too intense, like a viper staring at its prey, its tongue flicking.
A response quickly appeared in the bodyguards’ group chat.
"Is it Shawn Sutton?" Wayne guessed. "He tried to hit on you last time."
"I’ll go get rid of him right now," Will added.
By which he meant, he’d drag the man outside for a "chat" and give him an experience he’d never forget.
"It’s not him," Jane replied through their link.
This feeling of being watched wasn’t unfamiliar to her, and she already had an idea of who it might be.
"You two, do not show yourselves, no matter what. And Will, I need you to run an errand for me right now. Find a few people and get them over here. Quickly."
——
Beverly Lynch received a text message saying that Shawn Sutton had followed some rich heiress to a wine-tasting event, but she paid it no mind.
They had already broken up; there was no need to care about his whereabouts.
It wasn’t until after work, as she was scrolling through her social media feed, that she learned Jane Lancaster had also gone to that same wine-tasting event.
If that was the case, then she absolutely had to go.
