Every Sentinel I Dreamed of Came Looking for Me
Chapter 148: Uncontrollable Confession 2
Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Uncontrollable Confession 2
Yun Sheng opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but when she met Bai Ye’s eyes, which were swirling with too many emotions, all the words caught in her throat.
Of course she understood.
But she didn’t know how to answer him at this moment.
Just as she was frozen in a daze, Bai Ye suddenly took a step forward.
The distance between them closed abruptly, so close she could see the slight bob of his Adam’s apple, so close she could feel the warmth radiating from his body.
Yun Sheng subconsciously tried to retreat, but her back hit a cold tree trunk.
His broad figure blocked the moonlight, casting her completely in his shadow. She was like a captured prey with nowhere to run.
"White... White Tiger..."
Her voice trembled, and even her breathing grew ragged.
Bai Ye looked down at her, his gaze gliding from her eyes and brows to the tip of her nose, finally settling on her faintly trembling lips.
"Scared you?"
His voice was low and raspy, yet it carried a seriousness she had never heard before.
Yun Sheng bit her lip, nodding slightly before shaking her head.
’She didn’t know what she was trying to express.’
Bai Ye watched her flustered expression, slowly reaching out and gently brushing a stray strand of hair, tousled by the night wind, from her face with his thumb.
"Sorry, I can’t wait any longer. I used to think it was enough to just quietly stay by your side and protect you, but I was wrong.
"Now I’m afraid that someone met you before I did, that someone was more forward than me, that someone has already... found their way into your heart. If I don’t say something now, I might lose my place in your eyes forever."
Yun Sheng stared at him blankly, her brow slowly furrowing.
Her thoughts were a tangled mess.
’I already have a Sentinel, but how can I say that? If I tell him and White Tiger starts asking questions, I can’t expose Si Jin’s identity.’
’As for other reasons to refuse him...’
Yun Sheng stared into Bai Ye’s eyes as a thought suddenly flashed through her mind.
The thought came abruptly, but it was like a thorn, piercing deep into her heart.
"Have we met before?"
Bai Ye’s gaze wavered.
Yun Sheng didn’t miss the flicker of strangeness in that instant.
That single glance made her even more certain of her suspicions.
"From the very beginning, you added me as a contact and sent me such detailed information—you were after me specifically, weren’t you? You’ve been so good to me, risking your life to save me... It wasn’t because of some sense of duty, but because..."
She paused, taking a deep breath.
"Who are you, really?"
Bai Ye was silent, not saying a word.
Yun Sheng’s gaze fell on the mask on his face.
The silver mask that always concealed most of his face.
From their first meeting until now, he had never once taken it off.
’The number of Sentinels I know is limited, and the number of high-Level, powerful ones is even more so. And his name is White Tiger... could it really be such a coincidence?’
’If he really is who I think he is, then I don’t even need to think of a reason to reject him.’
’There’s absolutely no way I could ever accept that person!’
Bai Ye looked at her, hesitation and conflict flickering in his eyes.
He seemed to want to refuse, yet he remained rooted to the spot, not moving an inch.
Seeing this, Yun Sheng decided to just go for it and reached for the mask on his face.
Just as her fingertips were about to touch the edge of the mask, a faint rustling sound suddenly came from the dense woods opposite them.
The sound was very soft, like something slithering across dry leaves, but in the dead quiet of the night, it was exceptionally clear.
Bai Ye’s gaze turned sharp in an instant.
He grabbed the hand Yun Sheng had extended toward his mask, his other hand already on the hilt of his blade.
"Don’t move."
His voice was extremely low, his gaze locked on a certain spot in the distance.
Yun Sheng froze for a moment, then followed his line of sight.
In the depths of the dark forest, a pair of scarlet eyes suddenly lit up.
Then, more eyes lit up. One pair, two pairs, ten pairs, dozens of pairs...
A dense, overwhelming tide of them.
"Contaminant swarm attack! Everyone on alert!"
Bai Ye’s voice, suddenly raised, was low yet incredibly piercing, instantly shattering the night’s silence.
The moment the words left his mouth, Guo Kai was the first to leap to his feet. Ma Yu followed close behind, and Cheng Nian, Li Wen, and the others were jolted awake.
Bai Ye’s gaze was like lightning as he swiftly scanned the swarm of contaminants, assessing their numbers and attack routes.
Three seconds later, he had made his decision.
"Guo Kai, Ma Yu, guard the flanks! Take the others and fall back to the high ground behind us!" His voice was calm and decisive, without a trace of panic. "Go!"
Guo Kai moved at his command, taking Ma Yu to guard the sides.
Cheng Nian grabbed a still-drowsy Li Wen, with Zhou Ying and the others following close behind as they quickly retreated toward the high ground.
At the same time, Bai Ye’s gaze darkened as he looked at Yun Sheng.
"After I take care of them, when we’re somewhere safe, I’ll tell you... who I am."
Yun Sheng opened her mouth to say something, but he shoved her forcefully.
"Get back."
She stumbled back a few steps from his push. When she looked up again, Bai Ye had already turned around.
He just stood there, a shield for everyone, right in the most dangerous position.
The lead contaminant stared fixedly at him, its scarlet eyes filled with savagery.
It let out a low roar, and the contaminants behind it surged forward like a tide.
Bai Ye raised his blade and charged forward to meet them.
"An A-level contaminant... Why is there an A-level contaminant here?!"
Guo Kai’s face went white when he saw the lead contaminant.
Cheng Nian and the others had already retreated to the high ground, and their expressions changed when they heard this.
"A-level?" Zhao Qian’s voice turned shrill. "Doesn’t that mean we’re dead meat?!"
Yun Sheng had also retreated to the edge of the high ground. Hearing this, her gaze remained fixed on the figure below.
’No matter who White Tiger really is, right now he’s fighting for his life to protect them.’
’I don’t want anything to happen to him!’
By now, Bai Ye had already clashed with the A-level contaminant.
The gleam of his blade met sharp claws, erupting in a deafening crash.
His figure was as fast as a phantom, each slash striking with extreme precision at the contaminant’s vital points.
But the creature’s scales were too thick; a single slash only left a shallow white mark.
Meanwhile, the contaminants behind it were still surging forward like a tide.
Bai Ye’s gaze hardened. He spun abruptly, his blade sweeping out in a horizontal arc!
Three low-level contaminants that had lunged at him were instantly sliced in two, splattering black blood all over the ground.
Without a moment’s pause, he followed with a backhanded slash, sending another one that was trying to sneak up on his flank flying.
But there were too many contaminants rushing forward, a relentless, inexhaustible wave.
Bai Ye took a deep breath, and the aura around him suddenly exploded in power!
His spiritual power surged forth as if it were a tangible force, coalescing into a translucent barrier in front of him that forcibly held the swarm of contaminants back below the high ground.
The creatures slammed crazily against the barrier, their fangs and claws leaving a web of cracks, but for the moment, they could not break through.
On the high ground, the group breathed a small sigh of relief.
But then, a massive dark silhouette suddenly emerged from behind the contaminant swarm.
It was a full size larger than the A-level, its entire body covered in dark red scales. With every step it took, the ground trembled.
"Oh my god... there’s another one!"
Cheng Nian cried out, her voice trembling.
Ma Yu stared intently at the massive beast, his pupils contracting as his face turned deathly pale, as white as paper.
"A Blood Scale Beast... It’s an S-Class contaminant, a Blood Scale Beast!"
The moment he finished speaking, the Blood Scale Beast suddenly threw its head back and let out a long, piercing shriek that made everyone’s eardrums ache.
It kicked off the ground with its powerful limbs, charging toward Bai Ye like a moving mountain!
At the same time, the A-level contaminant also moved.
It lunged at Bai Ye from the flank, its claws tearing through the air with a WHOOSH.
The two massive beasts, one in front and one behind, launched a pincer attack!
Bai Ye’s gaze sharpened. He retreated rapidly, barely dodging the Blood Scale Beast’s claws.
The claws scraped past his chest, tearing away shreds of fabric.
But before he could regain his footing, the fangs of the A-level contaminant were right in front of his face!
