Chapter 706 643: By the Bedside, More Than Meets the Eye
Pill Pavilion.
Spirit Medicine Tower.
"Pharmacist Yang, I've completed the handover on my end. It's all on you now!"
Fang Zhi'an let out a long sigh of relief after finishing the complete handover of all duties concerning the Intermediate Pharmacists at the Spirit Medicine Tower.
During the handover period, Yang Chan had already begun replacing some of the staff. Most of those replaced held key positions, and their replacements were, in part, Pharmacists from Chiyu Peak.
Seeing this, Fang Zhi'an remained silent, feigning ignorance.
'He knew Yang Chan would definitely replace people in the Spirit Medicine Tower. After all, you can't let another man snore in your own bed. If he weren't the acting Steward of the Spirit Medicine Tower, he would have done the same—started replacing people instead of letting Zhu Feiyu's old subordinates stay. They were all ticking time bombs, just waiting to go off.'
'The best solution was to remove them directly. As long as they weren't in the Spirit Medicine Tower, they couldn't affect him.'
'His own tenure as acting Steward had been smooth because he hadn't touched any of the existing staff. Everyone had reached a tacit understanding, so there were no conflicts, and they had gotten along reasonably well.'
But Yang Chan was different. His very presence created a major conflict with these people.
During the handover these past few days, he had witnessed Yang Chan's methods firsthand. He replaced those in important positions directly and without mercy.
When someone stirred up trouble, Yang Chan dealt with them, kicking them out of the Spirit Medicine Tower. Those who threatened the Tower's interests were sent directly to the Law Enforcement Hall to be taught a lesson according to the Holy Land's rules. Such decisive action left Fang Zhi'an breathless with admiration.
'Yang Chan doesn't look old—he's only twenty—but his methods are incredibly sophisticated.'
Yang Chan had also asked for his help in resolving some of the troubles that arose in the Spirit Medicine Tower, which made it impossible for Fang Zhi'an, who wanted no part in these struggles, to stay out of it.
During the handover, he still held the responsibilities of the acting Steward and needed to maintain stability in the Spirit Medicine Tower. So, despite his desire to remain uninvolved, he had no choice but to help Yang Chan clean up the aftermath.
Meanwhile, Yang Chan's control over the Spirit Medicine Tower grew stronger by the day. Fang Zhi'an saw all of this and couldn't help but admire his tactics.
Even without his help, Yang Chan could have resolved the situation at the Spirit Medicine Tower and installed his own people, though it would have taken longer. Fang Zhi'an's assistance was simply speeding things up.
Now that the handover was complete, Fang Zhi'an let out another sigh of relief. He wouldn't have to keep making enemies.
'Although I'm one of Pavilion Master Bai Keyi's men, I don't want to excessively offend the Quasi-Saint Son's faction. I was dragged into this by Yang Chan, but now that I'm out, things will be much better.'
'As for those who were dismissed, if they blame me, I can handle it.'
'I don't want to offend the other faction, but that doesn't mean I'm afraid of the Quasi-Saint Son's people. Besides, the number of people dismissed wasn't large; it was within my acceptable limits.'
As he thought this, it suddenly dawned on him, and he looked at Yang Chan with even more admiration.
'He probably knew my bottom line from the very beginning. That must be why he arranged things this way.'
'When I started the handover, I had already prepared myself. It's impossible to avoid offending anyone completely unless Yang Chan does absolutely nothing.'
'But that was highly unlikely. Even if Yang Chan didn't know better, someone from the Merak Saintess or Chiyu Peak would have reminded him. Therefore, I figured that as long as I didn't offend too many people, it would be a good outcome.'
'So, I had already anticipated helping Yang Chan clean up some messes.'
Furthermore, when Yang Chan was dismissing those people, he rarely consulted him. Yang Chan made the arrangements himself and only handed over the task of stabilizing the Spirit Medicine Tower afterward. He never made Fang Zhi'an directly confront the Quasi-Saint Son's people, which kept things within his tolerance.
As a result, their relationship hadn't soured during the handover; on the contrary, they had grown much closer.
It was only now, with the handover complete and feeling a weight off his shoulders, that Fang Zhi'an realized this. After thinking it through, he just gave a small chuckle.
'Some people leave you feeling very uncomfortable after working with them; once the job is done, you basically go your separate ways for good. But other people make you feel very comfortable. Even if you know there were some manipulations involved, you don't really mind afterward. In fact, you end up feeling closer.'
'And right now, in my eyes, Yang Chan is the latter type of person.'
'Indeed, you can't judge a book by its cover. Even someone who looks very young might have interpersonal skills far beyond the ordinary.'
"I've troubled you these past few days, Pharmacist Fang!"
"With your help, I was able to quickly familiarize myself with the affairs of the Spirit Medicine Tower!"
"These are some of the Insights I've compiled from my promotion to Advanced Pharmacist. I hope they can be of some help to you, Pharmacist Fang, and aid you in your own promotion to Advanced Pharmacist soon!"
"It's a token of my gratitude. Please don't refuse it, Pharmacist Fang. I've only just joined the Holy Land, so I don't have anything better to offer!"
Yang Chan cupped his fist in thanks, a smile on his face.
He then produced a book containing some of his Alchemy Insights.
He had left a similar volume behind in the Cyan Yuan Sect for future generations. The one he now held was a version he had compiled here in the Merak Sacred Land, a gift for Fang Zhi'an.
Although Fang Zhi'an had only been following Pavilion Master Bai Keyi's orders to conduct the handover and help him get up to speed, the man had truly been a great help.
When offering it, he specifically said it was the only thing he could offer to prevent Fang Zhi'an from refusing.
"Since you've put it that way, Pharmacist Yang, it would be impolite of me to refuse!"
Fang Zhi'an had intended to refuse, but Yang Chan's last words made him change his mind.
'Just as I thought... interacting with Yang Chan is a very comfortable experience. And the gift is exactly what I need most.'
