Endless Debt
Chapter 1589 - 101: Upon Sword and Blade_2
Every member of the Undying Club is a person without a home, so these wanderers come together to console each other and alleviate the eternal loneliness.
"So meaningless..."
Sai Zong mumbled, handing the empty glass back to Bode to have it filled once more.
"Serey, you really know how to kill a mood, not high, not low... I really don’t know what to make of you."
Sai Zong wanted to criticize more, but just as the words reached his lips, he lost interest as if he didn’t have the energy to speak anymore.
Meaningless.
Serey is a stubborn guy; if words could sway him, Aisha wouldn’t have died, Olivia wouldn’t have left, and all this mess wouldn’t have followed.
Sai Zong drank gloomily, while Bode quietly refilled his glass, and Wei’Er hid quietly on the side, not wanting to get into trouble.
In the silence, Serey curled up, hugging himself tight. It’s hard to imagine a Night Race Lord looking so pitiful, like a stray dog drenched in cold rain.
Serey is no fool. After a brief loss of control, he sobered up. This had nothing to do with Sai Zong, or anyone else. This was Olivia’s open plan for herself, much like her mother’s.
"I have to say, even though I’ve never met Aisha, I really see her shadow in Olivia," Sai Zong leaned back on the bar, "In comparison, she is so brave, almost unlike a child of your Night Race."
Sai Zong’s voice wasn’t loud, but to Serey, it sounded like thunder, booming and giving him a headache.
His heart rate accelerated, sweat trickled from his brow, and Serey felt like a patient on the brink of sudden death, enduring the torment of illness.
"Damn it! Damn it!"
Serey cursed inwardly, desperately wanting to find a target to bear all his anger, resentment, and responsibility, to liberate himself, but no matter how he racked his brain, he found no answer.
In the end, Serey clearly realized this was his responsibility, one he had to bear. No matter how he tried to evade it, it would eventually catch up with him, tearing him apart.
The shadows in the corner gradually quieted down, and Serey collapsed onto the ground, his face pale.
"Have you decided? Serey," Sai Zong crossed his arms and said coldly, "You don’t have much time left."
"I... even if I have decided, what can I do?"
Serey laughed bitterly, his body becoming more limp as if he had lost his spine, "Even if I return to the Land of Eternal Night, so what? My Secret Energy is far behind the times, and as for my Immortal Armor, they have long shattered and been sealed away..."
Sai Zong suddenly strode over to Serey, grabbed his collar with both hands, and hauled him up.
The anger in Sai Zong’s eyes so close, Serey could even smell the pungent sulfur.
"It’s not about those things. I’m asking you, have you decided... no, Serey, are you ready?"
Like an illusion, Sai Zong’s face began to twist and disintegrate, until it turned into a mass of writhing molten lava, flames surging, swords protruding from the fissures.
"Tell me! Serey!"
The scolding was like a hook, rudely drilling into Serey’s body, stirring his guts, hooking onto everything about him.
Organs, flesh, bones, even the soul... everything beneath the skin was firmly grasped by the hook, gently pulled and completely dragged out, exposed to the sunlight, left for all to see.
Serey blinked dazedly, not considering any reality or pros and cons, just purely questioning his own heart.
"Serey, you’ve already made one mistake, don’t make a second one."
Sai Zong’s words suddenly turned gentle, the heat becoming warm.
"Now, you still have a chance to save it."
Various fantasies played out before Serey’s eyes. He saw Olivia’s departing silhouette, she and Aisha were so alike, until they vanished in the golden sunlight...
"I..."
Serey opened his mouth, trying hard to respond, but no matter how hard he tried, the voice seemed stuck in his throat.
"I..."
Serey wanted to respond to Sai Zong, but his cowardly nature restrained his courage. Thinking of his despicable heart, Serey felt immense sadness.
He loathed himself like this, his helpless self, wishing he could torment himself with the harshest punishments.
But can such self-torment change anything? It changes nothing; it’s still an act of inner avoidance, using pain to calm his heart, to justify his cowardice.
No... no, no, no, he can’t hesitate any more, he can’t linger any more, he can’t stop moving forward.
A strong sense of panic arose in Serey’s heart. Since losing Aisha, his life had been grim. Serey couldn’t imagine, if he lost Olivia too, what his world would become?
Moreover, if he lost Olivia, lost her, he wouldn’t even find the last trace of Aisha.
Serey’s chaotic thoughts hit a pause. He suddenly remembered what Aisha once said, that Olivia was a gift, a link connecting Serey to the world.
Only after many years did Serey understand Aisha’s words.
The awakening filled with clarity.
Sai Zong saw it, a surge of uncontrollable rage arose in Serey’s cowardly eyes, so pure was that anger, like mead, making the furious Chosen One ecstatic.
