Emperor of the Source
Chapter 451: Forging the Foundation
The rule fragment of Temporal Continuity floated within the empty chamber Adrian had created. In the distance, the Time chamber remained as vast and intricate as before, but the position from which Adrian had removed this fragment now lay empty.
His Source Seed allowed him to separate rules, move them between chambers, and dismantle failed concepts without damaging his foundation, but it did not create a second version of something he already possessed. The fragment before him was the only one of its kind within his Source Seed, and if he wanted to use it elsewhere, he would have to move it.
Adrian studied the fragment for a moment before returning his awareness to the Time chamber. Temporal Continuity could preserve the connection between departure and arrival, but it could not decide how change advanced or reveal where that change might lead. He therefore removed a thinner rule fragment governing Sequence, followed by a branching golden rule whose light continually divided into several possible paths before all but one faded.
Temporal Branching would eventually allow Origin's disciples to recognize the immediate continuations developing from the present.
Adrian placed the Sequence rule beside the Temporal Continuity rule and allowed the two fragments to align. Temporal Branching settled farther away, its divided paths extending from the continuity fragment instead of competing with it. The simple arrangement stabilized quickly, but it was only the beginning.
His consciousness entered the Space chamber next. He moved fragments that governed the connection between separated locations and the anchoring of a precise destination. Silver-blue light entered the experimental chamber and immediately stretched toward two distant points, as if the chamber's limited interior had become far larger than its boundaries suggested.
Adrian then turned toward Life. He selected one rule fragment that preserved the complete pattern of a living being and another that restored damaged flesh toward that pattern. Emerald radiance spread across the chamber when he moved them inside, but the moment it touched the Space rules, both concepts resisted.
Space attempted to pull the forming structure toward two separated positions. Life resisted that division and gathered everything around the living pattern it was meant to preserve. The silver-blue and emerald fragments struck one another repeatedly, sending ripples through the empty chamber, while Temporal Continuity stretched between them like a golden thread that refused to break.
Adrian watched their struggle without forcing them into place. He had already studied how the Elyrians combined Space and Life, so the resistance itself did not surprise him. Space had to define where a living being began and where that being would arrive, while Life had to remain attached to the existence moving between those locations instead of anchoring itself to either point alone.
He moved the preservation fragment onto Temporal Continuity. The emerald rule wrapped itself around the golden thread, while the restorative fragment settled behind it as a secondary layer. Adrian then rotated the two Space fragments until one marked the beginning of the sequence and the other marked its end.
The resistance weakened. Silver-blue light continued pulling toward two locations, but the Life rules no longer fought that separation. They held to the golden connection between the two points, preserving the traveler rather than the place from which the journey began.
Only after those three concepts reached a rough balance did Adrian direct his awareness toward Void. The Void chamber contained many rules he could have chosen, including those governing emptiness, isolation, concealment, and the erosion of everything that entered the intergalactic dark. Adrian ignored the more destructive fragments and moved only those capable of forming a passage through the void and shielding what traveled within it.
Dark-violet radiance entered the experimental chamber, and the entire structure convulsed. Void spread between the two spatial positions and attempted to turn the interval into true emptiness. Space resisted, trying to connect the same locations that Void was separating, while the Life fragments recoiled and Temporal Continuity flickered as the middle of the sequence threatened to disappear altogether.
Adrian's willforce descended upon the chamber and stopped the fragments before they could scatter. He shifted the Void Passage fragment away from Life, rotated the spatial connection around it, and moved Temporal Continuity through the center of both. The chamber stabilized for an instant before the shielding fragment struck the Life pattern and sent emerald cracks racing across the forming structure, forcing him to change the arrangement again and continue adjusting it.
Some configurations collapsed as soon as he released his willforce. Others survived for several breaths before Void consumed the destination, Space divided the Life pattern between two positions, or Temporal Branching produced several incomplete arrivals from the same departure. Each failure revealed a different weakness, and Adrian dismantled only the unstable portion before moving the fragments into a new relationship.
Gradually, the violent collisions weakened. Space established where the traveler would go. Void formed the road between the two points. Life preserved what moved along that road, and Time ensured that the existence arriving at the destination remained connected to the one that had departed.
When the final fragment settled, all four colors flowed toward the center. Silver-blue and emerald radiance disappeared into the dark violet, while pale-golden currents wound through the completed structure like threads of light beneath deep water.
A wave of essence spread from the new chamber and passed through Adrian's entire Source Seed. His physical body remained seated at the center of the training chamber, but his Mana Sea responded at once, its boundaries expanding outward as another five thousand mana units were added to its capacity. The concept had reached the high tier.
Adrian examined it in silence. It possessed the functions he wanted in their earliest forms, and with his control, he could maintain the delicate balance between them. However, the structure depended upon several fragments being held at precise angles to one another. If a disciple misplaced even one of them while forming a Rule Core, Void could erode the Life structure or sever the destination from Temporal Continuity before the concept stabilized.
It was a successful divine concept, but that did not make it worthy of becoming Origin's foundation, so Adrian dismantled it without hesitation.
The unified dark-violet-and-golden radiance separated into the same fragments he had moved into the chamber. Nothing remained within the completed concept after it was dismantled. The unique rules simply became separate once more, ready to be shifted, rotated, and joined in a different arrangement as Adrian began again.
Time slowly passed…
By the clocks of Origin's headquarters, twenty-seven days passed beyond the sealed chamber. The formation built into its walls converted every one of those headquarters days into four years within the room, granting Adrian one hundred and eight years of uninterrupted research.
During the first years, he approached every structure with the same deliberate care. He formed one arrangement after another, waiting for the rules to stabilize before studying what kind of truth their union had produced. Many reached only the mid tier, not because their individual rules were weak, but because the four concepts merely endured one another instead of reinforcing the same purpose.
Those failures were not useless. Every completed mid-tier concept expanded his Mana Sea by three thousand units before he dismantled it, while every high-tier result added five thousand. More importantly, each one taught him how the fragments behaved when placed under pressures that did not exist within their original arcane concepts.
Some arrangements allowed Space to dominate. They moved essence between distant positions with exceptional ease, but Life always lagged behind the transition, leaving a brief interval in which the traveler could be damaged. Others placed Life at the center and produced powerful preservation, yet the same stability resisted movement so strongly that opening a Void passage required far more mana than it should have.
Void-dominant concepts crossed empty regions easily but slowly eroded their own supporting rules. Time-dominant versions preserved every stage of the journey with such rigidity that activating them felt like dragging an entire history forward at once. Temporal Branching created further problems. If Adrian placed it too early in the sequence, every possible destination competed to become real; if he placed it too late, it offered no warning until the movement had already been completed.
Years became decades. The experimental chamber filled with light, fell dark, and filled again as Adrian repeated the same cycle thousands of times. He moved the rule fragments into a new structure, allowed them to form a divine concept, observed the result, dismantled it, and reused those same fragments in the next attempt.
After one entire year in which nearly every careful arrangement ended at the high tier, Adrian stopped trying to make the structure appear balanced. He pushed a Void fragment through the center of a spatial connection, moved the Life pattern to a position he had rejected hundreds of times before, and allowed Temporal Continuity to bend around the resulting disorder.
The fragments locked together, releasing a surge of dark-violet-and-golden essence through his Source Seed as his Mana Sea expanded by ten thousand units. The concept had reached the ultimate tier, but Adrian's surprise faded as soon as he examined what he had created.
Its movement was extraordinary, yet its Life rules only preserved the traveler during the instant of transition. They offered almost no independent healing, and the structure could be assembled only if three fragments were joined within the same fraction of a moment. Adrian could accomplish that without difficulty. A disciple destroying four essence seeds while enduring the pain of Rule-Core formation could not.
He dismantled the ultimate-tier concept and began again, but that was not his only accidental success. Some emerged from calculated experiments, while others appeared when frustration drove Adrian to place fragments where his earlier reasoning insisted they should fail. One ultimate-tier structure could preserve a living body through nearly any injury, but held the user so firmly to their current state that movement through Space became sluggish. Another opened an exceptionally stable road through the Void, yet its Temporal Branching produced so many possible continuations that an ordinary mind would be overwhelmed before choosing among them.
Each structure possessed ultimate-tier authority, but none possessed the balance, safety, and reproducible construction sequence required of an inheritance meant for the entire Origin Sect.
Adrian continued testing them anyway. The random successes showed him relationships that careful symmetry had hidden, and the failures that followed taught him why those relationships worked. He gradually stopped asking where each concept should sit and began asking what single purpose every fragment needed to serve.

The answer was not teleportation, healing, void travel, speed, or prediction by itself. Those were only the abilities that would emerge from the foundation. Its central truth had to be simpler than all of them: it had to preserve and move a living existence through Space, Void, and Time.
Adrian emptied the experimental chamber once more. Temporal Continuity entered first, not as a wall surrounding the other rules, but as the golden thread upon which the entire structure would be built. The Life pattern settled along that thread and defined what had to be preserved, while the restorative fragment followed behind it, repairing any change that threatened the traveler's complete state.
Space formed the departure and destination around that living sequence. Void did not touch Life directly or attempt to replace the interval between the two positions. Instead, it curved around the spatial connection and became the passage through which the continuous living pattern could move.
Temporal Branching settled near the destination. Its golden paths unfolded from the present journey and revealed several possible continuations, but all of them remained connected to the same traveler. They no longer competed to divide the structure into several arrivals. They simply showed where the completed sequence could lead.
Adrian released his willforce, but for the first time in one hundred and eight years, none of the fragments shifted.
The rules began resonating without his control. Dark violet spread across the chamber, deep enough to resemble the silence between galaxies, while golden light flowed through it in unbroken currents. Faint traces of silver-blue and emerald remained within the structure, but both had become part of the higher truth rather than separate colors struggling to preserve themselves.
A far stronger wave of essence swept through Adrian. His Mana Sea expanded by another ten thousand units, confirming that the concept had reached the ultimate tier, but the increase barely held his attention. He followed the path by which each fragment supported the next, searching for the hidden instability that had ruined so many earlier attempts, yet found none.
The concept was powerful enough to become Origin's foundation, and its assembly remained clear. A disciple could begin with Temporal Continuity, anchor their living pattern to it, establish the two spatial positions, and only then introduce Void around the completed connection. Every stage supported what came after it, and no step required the impossible precision that had condemned Adrian's earlier ultimate-tier results, so this time, Adrian left the concept intact.
His awareness withdrew from the Source Seed, and the physical training chamber returned around him. The pale-golden runes covering the walls continued their silent circulation, while the Origin Construct supplied the formations with energy as steadily as it had more than a century earlier from Adrian's perspective. Beyond those walls, only twenty-seven headquarters days had passed.
Adrian opened his right hand and released a thread of the new divine essence. Dark-violet energy gathered above his palm, and slender golden currents flowed through it without ever breaking, even when he divided the essence into several smaller streams. The concept felt stable, responsive, and far more harmonious than any of the structures he had dismantled.
However, Adrian had created only the concept itself. He understood every rule within it and knew why they could remain together, but he possessed no practical experience using their completed union. Without a divine spell, he could not test how efficiently the essence moved, how much mana its abilities consumed, or whether the concept performed as well in reality as it had within his Source Seed.
A divine concept proved that something was possible, while a divine spell proved that someone could actually use it. With that distinction in mind, Adrian closed his eyes and began constructing a spell structure within his consciousness. As he had done when creating his first devour-based divine spell, he started with something familiar. He selected the framework of an ordinary short-range teleportation spell and replaced its Space rules with fragments belonging to the new divine concept, but the structure collapsed almost immediately.
An ordinary teleportation spell needed only to open a connection, move its target, and close the path. The new divine concept carried far more within the same action. It had to preserve the traveler's living pattern, maintain an unbroken temporal sequence, prevent the Void from entering the body, recognize the destination, and restore any damage produced during the transition. The simple arcane framework could not support those layers.
Adrian dismissed it and started again without relying upon the old spell's complete shape. He did not need an ability that displayed every future function of the concept. The first spell only needed to teach a new disciple how the rules worked together and provide a stable method they could use after forming their Rule Core, which meant its construction had to remain simple.
He used Temporal Continuity as the first internal connection, then attached the Life pattern to it so the spell recognized what had to arrive intact. Space established a destination within the caster's perception, while Temporal Branching examined the immediate continuations around that point and rejected an unstable arrival. Void then opened only the narrowest possible passage around the connection, and the restorative fragment closed the structure by correcting minor damage as the traveler completed the transition.
Several attempts failed as Adrian adjusted the activation order. When Void opened before Space had fixed the destination, the path drifted. When Life settled too late, the spell moved the body but produced a momentary disconnection between physical sensation and memory. Adrian corrected each flaw until the entire structure could begin, activate, and close without any fragment being left unsupported.
When the spell finally stabilized within his mind, Adrian opened his eyes and observed the distant side of the training chamber. The room was broad enough for destructive experiments, leaving hundreds of meters between him and the reinforced wall he selected as his destination.
Before casting, he raised one finger and drew its edge across his opposite palm. A shallow line opened in his flesh, and a few drops of blood gathered along the cut. The injury was insignificant, but it would reveal whether Life remained active during the transition or merely protected him from the spell itself.
Dark-violet-and-golden essence flowed around his body as Adrian activated the spell. Space fixed the distant point while Void opened the road. Life held his complete physical state to the golden thread of Temporal Continuity, and his existence moved through the connection without allowing departure and arrival to become separate events.
The place where Adrian had been standing became empty. In the same instant, he appeared near the opposite wall with the dark-violet essence fading around his robes.
He looked down at his palm. The cut had closed, leaving only a thin trace of blood across unbroken skin. His consciousness and memories had remained continuous throughout the movement, his mana channels had suffered no strain, and no residue of Void essence lingered within his body.
The cast had consumed slightly more than one thousand mana units. That amount was negligible compared with his reserves, but it remained inefficient for a spell that had crossed only the chamber. Adrian repeated the movement several times, changing the distance and mana input while watching how the structure behaved. Its range increased predictably, the healing remained limited to minor injuries, and the spell never lost its connection to the selected destination.
For a first low-level divine spell, it was sufficient, and Adrian named it Continuity Step. The spell also gave him the framework for the first volume of Origin's inheritance. It could explain which fragments had to be taken from Time, Space, Life, and Void, the order in which they should be joined, how the forming Rule Core had to be closed, and how a disciple could perform their first stable movement after reaching the Early Rule Stage.
Yet that was all the first volume could provide. A disciple who mastered the scripture would possess the foundational concept and one low-level spell, but their progression would stop at the beginning of the Rule Stage. Origin still needed mid-, high-, and ultimate-level divine spells, along with instructions that revealed progressively deeper uses of healing, void travel, Temporal Branching, and movement. Adrian could not hand his people an incomplete inheritance and expect them to discover the remaining path through the same century of experimentation he had just endured.
This limitation had followed many of the concepts and techniques he created. He had formed Ruination long ago without building an entire progression around it. Even his willforce-recovery spell remained a low-level divine spell till now. Understanding the rules allowed him to begin, but experience determined how far he could take them.
For ordinary sects, that experience accumulated across generations. Millions of years of cultivators creating spells, discovering flaws, surviving failures, and leaving improved structures behind eventually became an inheritance that later disciples could follow. Adrian could accelerate time and perform more experiments than any ordinary cultivator, but even one hundred and eight years had only brought him to the first reliable spell.
"Could the Source Form offer any help in this?" Adrian thought. When Adrian had cast Navira's needle technique in Source Form, the Will of the Source had silently corrected his crude structure, allowing Adrian to experience a perfected execution that should have required millions of years to develop.
He had used that perfection as his training at that time. Once he returned to his physical form, he had recreated part of what the Will showed him and advanced at a speed no ordinary Anchor-stage being could match. There was no reason the same principle had to remain limited to willforce.
Adrian looked at the dark-violet-and-golden essence still drifting above his palm. If the Will of the Source corrected Continuity Step in the same way, he could observe what the spell looked like when every fragment reached its greatest possible efficiency. What other sects developed through millions of years of accumulated experience might become something he could understand within months, or perhaps even days.
He allowed the remaining essence to dissolve and released the restraint holding his deeper power. Adrian's physical body broke apart into white-grey radiance. Flesh, robes, mana, and every visible boundary of his human form dissolved into a luminous figure of pure essence, while his will merged with the vast and silent Will of the Source. Emotion vanished from him, taking with it the satisfaction he had felt toward the completed concept, the frustration of a century of failed arrangements, and the anticipation created by his new idea until only intent and action remained.
For a moment, Adrian observed the training chamber through that emotionless awareness as the containment systems reacted. Pale-golden runes blazed across the floor and walls, spatial layers tightened around the interior, and the energy-recycling formations drew in the pressure released by his transformation before it could spread into the rest of the Origin Construct. The chamber endured his source form far better than any place Adrian had used for this form before.
His intent turned toward Continuity Step, and dark-violet essence appeared within the white-grey radiance, threaded by pale gold. Adrian began the same spell he had created, using the same rules and the same structure, but the instant his will touched it, the Will of the Source moved with him and the spell changed.
Space fixed the destination before the first trace of Void appeared. Temporal Continuity did not merely surround the Life pattern but passed through every part of it, connecting flesh, mana, consciousness, memory, and will as one existence. Void curved around that continuous state without touching it, while Temporal Branching unfolded at the destination and discarded unstable continuations before the passage opened.
Several layers Adrian had added for protection disappeared because they were no longer necessary. Other fragments rotated by distances so small that his ordinary awareness might once have considered the difference meaningless, yet every adjustment removed resistance from the next. Mana that had been wasted holding conflicting rules apart now flowed through the structure without obstruction.
The completed spell activated, and every containment rune in the chamber erupted with light. The reinforced spatial layers folded inward as the dark-violet-and-golden passage crossed the entire room, and Adrian's white-grey form vanished from one end of the chamber before appearing at the other without leaving even the faintest fracture behind.
The movement itself was only the visible result. Within the merged awareness, Adrian perceived the true difference. The spell's stability, efficiency, and effect had risen until its power challenged Ultimate-level divine spells, despite originating from the Low-level structure he had created moments earlier.
The Will of the Source had shown what Adrian's own creation could become when every flaw was removed.
Adrian perceived each correction with perfect clarity. He saw why Space had to settle before Void, why Life had to remain connected through the entire transition, and why Temporal Branching belonged at the destination rather than the beginning. The corrected structure remained before his awareness like an answer to a question that entire civilizations could spend millions of years trying to solve.
The complete inheritance of Origin was not finished. Adrian still had to reproduce this structure without relying upon Source Form, structure this spell in multiple levels so that it would guide his disciples through the Middle, High, and Peak Rule Stages, and prove that each step remained safe for cultivators who did not possess his advantages. However, the path was no longer hidden.
Once he could cast this perfected structure through his own understanding, raising Continuity Step to the ultimate level would only be the beginning.
