Chapter 449: Chains Across Millions of Years

Adrian and Hestia did not remain inside the training chamber for the century she had jokingly threatened. Once they finally left, Hestia took him to a quiet private residence built into the upper levels of the Origin Construct. The residence had been prepared for both of them and overlooked the layered headquarters worlds through a broad transparent wall, but Hestia gave him little time to examine it before asking the question that had evidently been on her mind.

"So what now?" she asked. "Do I need to prepare for you disappearing on another journey?"

"No." Adrian stood beside her before the window, watching luminous transport currents move between the distant worlds. "I already possess more concepts than I can properly use. Another journey might give me more, but it will not teach me how to bring the ones I have together."

Hestia studied him with greater interest. "Then you are finally going to begin creating the divine concept you want for Origin?"

"That is the plan. This journey gave me the missing knowledge of Time, and what I learned from the Elyrians proved that opposing Arcane Concepts can coexist within a stable divine concept. I still do not know what the final structure will look like, but I have enough pieces now to begin experimenting." Adrian turned from the window to face her. "Until I create the foundation, collecting more concepts would only give me additional problems to solve. For now, I intend to remain here and work with what I already possess."

A teasing light appeared within Hestia's pale golden eyes. "I see. Instead of disappearing into another galaxy to avoid your responsibilities, you intend to disappear into a research chamber where none of my reports can reach you."

"I said I would remain nearby," Adrian replied. "I did not volunteer to accept every administrative report you decide to place on my desk."

"You should have read the conditions more carefully before promising to help me." Hestia stepped closer and rested one hand against his chest. "And do not forget the three diplomatic visits you promised. You have around ten external months before the leaders of the Starlight Sanctum, the Cerulean Spear Sect, and the Veiled Horizon Sect begin wondering whether you ever intended to meet them."

"I remember. I will be here, Hestia, and whenever I am not experimenting, I will be around you. If you need me for the Crimson Vital Sect, Origin, or those meetings, you will know where to find me."

Hestia's smile made it clear that she intended to hold him to every word. "I will remember that."

Despite his intention to begin the experiments, Adrian did not immediately seal himself away. He spent the next several days of ordinary Andromeda time with Hestia and the family members who had seen little of him during his journey. Aerin claimed a considerable portion of that attention for herself, while Thomas and Elara made certain that their son could not return from a month-long disappearance without enduring their questions.

Adrian also restored his public presence within the Crimson Vital Sect. He appeared at the Crimson Spire, inspected the expanding Healing Artifact division, met several elders, and authenticated his UNI-OS account while physically present within Andromeda. To the sect's disciples, none of this seemed unusual. Adrian had supposedly entered closed-door cultivation after the Supremacy War, and his reappearance merely meant that his seclusion had ended.

The same appearances created a far more useful impression for anyone monitoring the sect from outside. Hestia's departures toward Virelith were visible because the relic key she had purchased through the UNI-Auction possessed a registered spatial resonance leading into that distant galaxy. Whenever Adrian travelled with her, he used direct command. Surveillance arrays therefore recorded Hestia leaving for an undeveloped backwater while Adrian produced no independent departure signature at all.

When the two returned, Adrian repeated the process in reverse and later appeared somewhere within Andromeda beneath his true face and mana signature. Between his public sightings and authenticated UNI-OS activity, the simplest conclusion was that he had never left the galaxy.

That was precisely the conclusion reached within the Andromeda UNI-Hub.

Far above its commercial districts and transportation platforms, a sealed chamber was inaccessible to ordinary visitors. Silver lines moved through its pale walls as private reports travelled across the UNI network, while a transparent panel looked out upon the star systems surrounding the station.

Vaelon stood before that window with his hands folded behind his back. He possessed the middle-aged appearance of a humanoid man, although his skin shone with a striking golden radiance and flowing robes of the same color covered his body. His Astral Stage cultivation remained completely restrained, leaving the chamber untouched by the slightest trace of his mana, authority, or willforce.

The door dissolved into silver particles as a UNI intelligence officer entered and bowed. Vaelon did not turn from the window before giving his order. "Report."

"We have observed Elder Adrian and the Crimson Vital Sect for more than two months since the end of the Supremacy War," the officer said. "We have found no new evidence of the organization standing behind him."

"Tell me what you confirmed."

The officer raised one hand, projecting records of Adrian's recent appearances alongside the authentication history of his UNI-OS official account. "Sect Leader Hestia has travelled outside Andromeda repeatedly. Every recorded departure corresponds with the activation of her relic key, and its spatial resonance terminates somewhere within the Virelith Galaxy. We lose her after she crosses the boundary, since Virelith has no recognized intergalactic power, public market, or active UNI-Hub."

Several images enlarged, showing Adrian inside the Crimson Spire and the public Healing Artifact facilities.

"Elder Adrian has no corresponding travel record," the officer continued. "We cannot observe everything that occurs inside protected Crimson Vital territory, but no independent portal, vessel, relic, or formation carried his signature beyond Andromeda. Every confirmed sighting places him here, and every activation of his UNI-OS account originated inside the galaxy. We found no new messenger, communication route, or spatial signature belonging to the Void Sect."

Vaelon dismissed the projections with a small movement of his fingers. The report only deepened a contradiction that had remained unresolved since the final days of the war.

When Vaelon prepared to enter the Andromeda battlefield, Sylas intercepted him in the void and delivered a warning Vaelon had never forgotten: "He is under my Void Sect. Do not dare think you can reach your hand toward my younger generation. Return to your little hub."

After the war, Vaelon expected Adrian to leave Andromeda for the Void Galaxy or begin advancing some visible objective on behalf of the Great Sect. But Adrian did neither. He remained with the Crimson Vital Sect, overwhelmed the Astral envoys sent by the Starlight Sanctum, Cerulean Spear Sect, and Veiled Horizon Sect, and ordered them to spread word that a force far stronger than himself stood behind him.

The warning convinced most surrounding powers that an unknown organization protected Andromeda. Vaelon suspected a simpler answer. The Void Sect was one of the few Great Sects capable of opposing the UNI-Sect as an equal, and Sylas had personally crossed into Andromeda to prevent Adrian's recruitment. It was reasonable to conclude that the hidden organization was merely a convenient mask for the Void Sect's involvement.

From that point onward, determining what the Void Sect intended to accomplish through Adrian became Vaelon's main reason for remaining within Andromeda. Yet Adrian had conquered a galaxy and established enough deterrence to keep nearby powers away, only for nothing visible to follow. His public seclusion ended, and he now appeared content to remain an elder beneath Hestia.

"Continue observing him," Vaelon ordered. "Do not interfere, and do not allow the Crimson Vital Sect to notice that our priorities have changed. His inactivity does not explain Sylas's warning."

"Understood, Senior Vaelon." The officer withdrew the projections but remained in place. "There is another matter that may affect the Crimson Vital Sect."

Vaelon turned slightly toward him. "Speak."

"The Ebon Meridian Sect has submitted a contract complaint against Hestia."

Hestia's ancient history was already recorded within the UNI-Sect's archives. Millions of years ago, she had been the mortal patriarch of a clan in the Valtheris Galaxy, where her people lived beneath an empire controlled by the Ebon Meridian Sect. Her clan eventually escaped that galaxy, but nearly everyone who followed her died during the long struggle to build the sanctuary that later became the Crimson Vital Sect.

The name Ebon Meridian therefore held Vaelon's attention. It was a Lesser Major Sect whose influence extended across most of Valtheris, and its current Sect Leader was not someone who should have remained ignorant of the danger surrounding Andromeda.

The faintest trace of amusement touched Vaelon's expression. Three Major-Sect envoys had already been humbled before the entire galaxy, and the warning they carried home had discouraged every nearby Lesser Major Sect from testing Adrian's claim. That someone from Hestia's forgotten past had now chosen to approach the Crimson Vital Sect made the filing considerably more interesting.

"What complaint could reach Hestia after millions of years?" Vaelon asked.

"An Ancestral Venture Covenant signed by her clan's former patriarchs. The Ebon Meridian Sect provided them with protected territory, commercial capital, military security, and access to its interstellar markets. In return, the clan accepted fixed resource quotas and surrendered a percentage of its commercial revenue. The venture failed, and the default provisions placed the entire clan under what the covenant calls debt stewardship."

"Bonded labor," Vaelon said.

"Hereditary bonded labor," the officer confirmed. "The document does not classify the clan members as property. It defines their labor and future production as repayment. Hestia inherited the clan's registered patriarchal seal while those provisions were active, which made her the recognized guarantor of every unresolved covenant attached to that office. "

Vaelon immediately saw the legal chain. "The covenant follows the patriarchal authority into any successor institution."

"Yes. It contains an anti-evasion clause written precisely for that purpose. The Ebon Meridian Sect argues that the Crimson Vital Sect is not an independent creation but the successor estate of the clan that escaped its obligations."

The officer opened the relevant sections of the covenant. Dense layers of runes unfolded through the chamber, highlighting two default remedies.

"The first permits the creditor to demand financial compensation whose present assessed value exceeds the entire publicly recorded wealth of the Crimson Vital Sect. The second permits foreclosure upon every asset governed by the inherited patriarchal authority."

Additional lines brightened within the projection.

"Individual disciples are permitted to renounce their affiliation and leave. However, the sect's worlds, treasury, archives, commercial divisions, artifact reserves, and governing rights would transfer to the Ebon Meridian Sect. If those assets remain insufficient to satisfy the debt, Hestia is bound by a personal-service guarantee until the remaining value has been repaid."

The covenant avoided the language of slavery with considerable care, but the distinction existed mainly for the benefit of the powers enforcing it. Hestia's people had lived beneath those conditions until she led them away, and a compulsory service term measured against an indemnity accumulated across millions of years could outlast even an Astral cultivator.

"Is it a UNI-Contract?" Vaelon asked.

"No," the officer answered. "It is an independently registered intergalactic covenant. The UNI-Sect therefore has no automatic obligation to compel performance. The Ebon Meridian Sect is currently requesting only preliminary authentication of the surviving signatures, recognition of Hestia as the inherited guarantor, and legal standing to present the claim against the Crimson Vital Sect."

The officer shifted the projection again. "Postwar recordings carried Hestia's identity into Valtheris. Their archives matched her present mana signature against the old patriarchal seal. Our own verification systems have confirmed the match and found no recorded evidence that the underlying covenant was ever repaid or formally discharged."

The filing was not an invented pretext. The Ebon Meridian Sect possessed an authentic covenant, a genuine financial history with Hestia's clan, and a clear motive to pursue the wealth she now governed. UNI needed only to recognize the creditor's standing and allow the dispute to develop on its own. Whatever power Vaelon believed stood behind Adrian would then have to decide whether the Crimson Vital Sect was worth defending against a lawful claimant.

"Approve the preliminary authentication and recognize the Ebon Meridian Sect's right to present the complaint," Vaelon said.

The officer bowed his head. "Should a UNI legal delegation accompany them?"

"No. This is not a UNI-Contract, and we will not assume responsibility for collecting it. The Ebon Meridian Sect may present and pursue its claim through its own authority."

"Understood."

Once the officer departed and the silver door reformed behind him, Vaelon raised one hand. A small sphere of golden energy condensed above his palm, orbited slowly around his fingers, and compressed with each revolution until it resembled a miniature star caught within his grasp.

In Vaelon's eyes, the UNI-Sect and the Void Sect had begun another contest upon the universal board without permitting their true powers to collide directly. An ancient covenant had now created precisely the kind of pressure that might force his rival to reveal its intentions, and the piece sitting at the center of that pressure was Adrian.
