The golden doorway released Adrian into the empty center of the ancient galaxy and folded shut behind him. He floated motionless in the dark void, immediately recognizing the same isolated galaxy from which the Door to Kaalatva had carried him into Master Roo's territory.

He caught one final spatial ripple contracting toward the point where the doorway had vanished and instinctively tried to examine it. When he focused his intent upon it, the universe slowed within his perception, allowing him to see a thin fold of golden space that would disappear in the next fraction of a second.

Adrian reached toward it with his hand and mana, curious whether the remnant still carried any trace of Roo's route, but his awareness completed the decision long before physical response could follow. His fingers had barely begun to move when the fold disappeared.

A later mana command might have entered his channels before the intention responsible for producing it had completed its journey through his consciousness. A muscular response could have begun before the nerve impulse controlling it arrived, while memory might have recorded an experience before his body had actually completed the event being remembered.

The resulting cross-state interference would have resembled the failure that had nearly torn Adrian apart within the Epoch Crucible.

Advanced Galactic Time had finally given him the missing principle. Different parts of an existence did not need to occupy the same instant. They merely needed to preserve the relationship connecting what came before to what followed.

Adrian's eyes brightened with white-grey light.

"With that principle," he thought, "I should be able to accelerate everything."
