Chapter 1212: The Stick Insect of the Sacred Night Capital (18)
His origins were indeed far from simple!
Facing Levin's reaction, Fu Qian remained impassive and quickly drew a conclusion.
The guy probably hadn't recognized any of his alternate personas. What surprised him was likely the Skin he had draped over himself.
Since that Skin most likely belonged to some ancient Deity, Levin's ability to recognize it at a glance proved that Fu Qian's earlier guess about him was pretty close to the mark.
"That's not right. How could you still be around, or even recovered to this extent..."
Before Fu Qian could say anything, Levin frowned and muttered to himself.
"But there's no mistaking this aura... So many things are wrong today..."
"Indeed they are."
This lament resonated with him. Fu Qian looked out the window, his implication clear.
He didn't ask who Levin "was." First, time was precious, and second, it might add unnecessary variables. One had to stay focused on the main priority at all times.
"Is this why you wanted a seat by the window?"
As expected, Levin dropped the identity issue and joined him in studying the view outside.
"Does that count as a question?"
Seeing that Levin had also noticed the changes brought by the Blazing Rainbow, Fu Qian didn't rush to answer. Instead, he kept the conversation locked on the main objective.
"It does, but I'll decide how many questions I ask in total."
Levin affirmed Fu Qian's question, then earnestly flipped through the notebook in his hands before emphasizing his point.
"Yes... that's what it says here."
'He really isn't quite normal. It feels like he barely counts as a complete persona.'
'Combined with the tone from earlier that sounded like an ancient Deity, the probability of him being a member of the Night Watchers is low. Could he be from the Night Watchers' inventory?'
Fu Qian didn't mind Levin's shameless declaration. He analyzed the gathered information, verifying it against his earlier speculations.
That's right. From the moment they met, he had suspected this guy's true nature.
After all, one could tell from Old Man Henry that regardless of any past connections, the current Night Watchers were completely hostile toward the Blazing Rainbow.
Wasn't it obvious that suspected affiliates like himself could be targeted for extermination at any moment?
If this really were a hidden big shot of the Night Watchers, the Blazing Rainbow wouldn't drag Him in as a pawn, even if it was dead set on killing Fu Qian and willing to pay the price.
A single misstep, and the Blazing Rainbow might lose control of the situation even if its true body underwent a Descent.
Furthermore, this person had arrived far too quickly, entirely lacking the judgment and decision-making process of a normal, rational creature.
Therefore, one possibility Fu Qian guessed was that this guy was an extremely special transcendent item, much like the Blind Eye Holy Grail he had encountered earlier.
"Regarding your question, yes. I need to keep an eye on the changes outside. It's more intuitive this way."
Fu Qian answered quickly as he thought.
The biggest difference between items and people was that items operated strictly by the rules.
He decided to act based on this assumption first.
"It's a terrible situation indeed. The Night Watchers are going to be in trouble this time."
Levin seemed very satisfied with his performance, casually confirming that he was indeed not a Night Watcher.
"So, what's your relationship with them?"
Fu Qian took the opportunity to ask.
Since Levin had dictated the number of questions and maintained a relaxed posture, he was unlikely to finish asking them anytime soon. Fu Qian decisively tried to determine if this guy could be of any help later.
"Relationship... Let me see."
Levin was highly cooperative. He noisily flipped through his notebook, turning all the way back to the first page before finally finding the answer.
"I am their property. A very clear definition."
No wonder Old Man Logan was so domineering. The Night Watchers' accumulated resources were truly astounding.
Having verified his guess, Fu Qian couldn't hide his admiration.
A Deity Tier transcendent item was sitting right in front of him in the flesh.
"Isn't this clause a bit too unfair?"
Of course, this didn't stop him from sowing discord. Fu Qian frowned deeply, looking as if he couldn't stand the injustice.
"True, but since it's been established, it must be followed. As for why this clause exists, I've forgotten... I've forgotten a lot of things..."
Levin possessed a strong sense of contract.
"So why did you appear there?"
He clearly hadn't forgotten his own business, either. He looked at Fu Qian and asked his next question.
"Henry Campbell thinks I have something to do with the anomaly outside. To evade his pursuit, I led him toward crowded places, and then I found this thing."
Although the guy in front of him seemed a bit slow, Fu Qian wouldn't make the mistake of acting smart. He answered candidly.
The flip side of operating strictly by the rules was that once a taboo was triggered, there would be no room for mitigation. He couldn't afford to be careless.
"Henry... No wonder he was wandering around there."
Levin looked thoughtful, snorting a moment later.
"It makes no sense for him to say that. It's obvious that he has a stronger connection to the thing outside."
'He even knows this?'
Levin's extensive knowledge made even Fu Qian marvel.
"So you know about the Blazing Rainbow?"
"I do not."
Levin shook his head simply.
"I told you I've forgotten a lot of things. I just know they're connected."
"So, aren't you going to help?"
This wasn't entirely unexpected. Fu Qian took the chance to ask a crucial question.
"Why should I help?"
Levin stated it as a matter of course.
"According to the agreement, my duties are very clear. I am only responsible for monitoring anomalies related to faith."
'No wonder he's in the Sacred Night Capital.'
As soon as Levin said this, Fu Qian felt many things click into place.
He had previously wondered: since Casino City was designed as an observation room, what exactly was the method of observation?
Was there specialized equipment? Would there be quantitative standards?
In an era where faith was no longer prevalent, it really challenged the imagination.
It turned out there really was a piece of equipment—it was just ancient wetware.
"So that's how it is. Then why did you come looking for me?"
Fu Qian's expression instantly turned innocent.
"What makes you think I have anything to do with faith?"
"Doesn't absolute unknowability count as an anomaly?"
Levin gestured at the Head Cage Fu Qian had taken off.
'So that's how it is... As expected, fortune harbors misfortune. Every advantage has its drawback!'
Fu Qian sighed inwardly.
He never expected it to be because of the Sweet Dream Head Cage.
It had successfully helped him shake off Old Man Henry's pursuit, only to attract something even more ferocious. However, there was still one more question—
"Aren't you a bit too devoted to your duties? How long have I even had this on before you rushed straight over to mess with me?"
"On the contrary, my scope of duties is very loose. Unless there is a drastic change, I won't pay attention to it."
"So do I count as a drastic change?"
Fu Qian pointed at his own head.
"You don't. However, someone marked your anomalous state very prominently."
Levin looked a little dissatisfied.
"Which ultimately misled me."
