Chapter 1497 - 1538: Sneaking Out

The son is sensible, and she’s unsure about the daughter, but with the son helping to take care of her, there shouldn’t be any problems, thought Amelia Foster, hoping everything would go smoothly tonight.

Amelia Foster left dinner for the two children in the servants’ quarters. Clarence Xenos had dinner with his little sister. Clarence was lying on the small table doing his homework, while his sister sat nearby, scribbling on the drawing book Amelia bought her. One page was filled with colorful pictures, and the next was uncolored. The little one was presently holding a colored pen, scribbling away.

Before long, a few children came over to find Clarence Xenos, asking if he’d like to sneak off with them to watch the opera.

"There’s going to be a big opera show soon, with shadow puppets too, just like on TV. Do you want to go?" said a few of the children. These kids were brought by the servants and usually played around the servants’ quarters.

Clarence Xenos had been there for a few days, and naturally, had become somewhat acquainted with these kids.

Clarence’s eyes lit up. Back in the village, the opera troupe would occasionally come to perform, attracting quite a few people. Standing and watching was free, but if you wanted to sit, you’d have to pay. He always watched standing up; though he didn’t understand the singing, sometimes listening to adults explain he’d understand a bit.

After all, kids were just looking for fun and excitement.

"But my mom told me not to go to the front of the house; she wants me to stay inside tonight," Clarence said, troubled.

"We won’t cause trouble; we’ll just watch secretly for a while. Your mom won’t know. Once it’s over, we’ll come back. There are so many people here tonight, who’d notice us?" the other kids quickly said.

Clarence, despite generally being quite steady, still had a child’s curiosity, and eventually nodded, "Alright then." After all, most of his homework was done, and he could finish the rest after they returned.

Clarence began helping his sister put on her shoes. One of the kids watching asked quickly, "Clarence, you’re not thinking of bringing your silly sister along, are you?"

"My sister is not silly!" Clarence retorted angrily. He disliked anyone calling his sister silly, and had even fought with other kids over it before. That episode taught these kids not to say it in Clarence’s presence.

That child seemingly remembered the lesson and quickly asked, "You’re bringing your sister with us, then?"

"Of course," he said. He wanted his sister to see the opera, unsure if she’d seen it before.

"But what if your sister screams and shouts during it? We’d all get caught!"

"She won’t do that. My sister is very well-behaved and won’t scream or shout!" Clarence confidently said, "If you don’t allow me to bring my sister along, then I’m not going either."

"Alright, alright! You can bring your sister, but you have to keep an eye on her so she doesn’t run around or shout."

"Got it!" Clarence said, finished putting his sister’s shoes on, and held her hand, saying, "Little sister, brother is taking you to watch the opera later. Be good! Stay close to brother."

The little one tilted her head, took a long while, then nodded and responded, "Okay, I’ll listen to brother."
