Edge of the Apocalypse

Chapter 51: Chapter 47: My Past Life Teammates Have a Big Problem
Something was wrong with Liu Ye’ye—very wrong!
What kind of college girl living alone would invite a grown man she’d just met back to her place?
From what Yu Dong knew from his past life, Liu Ye’ye was a very innocent person in private, not the type to play around.
The story Liu Ye’ye had told him in his past life about being stalked by a creepy senior—this timeline’s Liu Ye’ye had flatly denied it ever happened.
This left Yu Dong a little bewildered.
He began to wonder if his second rebirth had caused some kind of change in the timeline.
’The Liu Ye’ye of this world looks identical to the one from my last life, but are they actually two different Liu Ye’yes from parallel universes?’
"Alright. I do have a lot I want to talk to you about."
Though his mind was racing, Yu Dong immediately agreed.
’If I don’t understand, I might as well talk it out with her.’
If Liu Ye’ye wasn’t afraid, he had even less reason to be.
A faint blush appeared on Liu Ye’ye’s face as she went to open the door to her home.
"Senior, c-come... come in. I’ll go get... get you something... to eat."
As Yu Dong came inside and began looking around her place, Liu Ye’ye clearly became a little shy and nervous.
Yu Dong could tell from her fidgeting.
The apartment’s layout was almost identical to the last timeline. Yu Dong could even see the drone on the living room shelf—the very one that had been such a huge help to their team in his past life.
"Senior, do you mind cold food?"
Yu Dong: "...I don’t mind."
"Here, ice cream."
Liu Ye’ye came out holding two tubs of Häagen-Dazs. She gave one to Yu Dong and kept the other, then sat on the sofa hugging a stuffed dog, secretly watching him from across the small coffee table.
This scene was exactly the same as when they had officially met in his past life.
"Aren’t you afraid I’m a bad guy?"
"You’re a good person."
"What makes you think that?"
"Because you’re handsome..."
"Huh?"
Yu Dong had to admit, a few girls had called him handsome before. But it was more that he was in good shape and looked sharp, not that he had the kind of universally heart-stopping looks that would attract hordes of superficial fans.
He was, at best, relatively handsome.
But that was hardly a reason!
Yu Dong felt that something was off about this world’s Liu Ye’ye.
"Liu Ye’ye, are... are you also a regressor?"
He stared into her eyes, unblinking.
That was the only thing that could explain why she was different from the Liu Ye’ye of his past life. Perhaps she had also been reborn and was deliberately messing with him.
There was no rule that said only one person could be reborn.
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
"Huh? I’ve never died before, so I wouldn’t know... Is there, like, a quota for everyone?"
Liu Ye’ye blinked her big, innocent eyes, which were filled with nothing but pure confusion.
Yu Dong couldn’t find a single crack in her facade.
"Alright. But you’re not quite the same as the Liu Ye’ye I know."
"The Liu Ye’ye you knew... what happened to her? How long did she live?"
"Six days from now, the zombie virus will break out and the apocalypse will begin. Because of your drone, we became teammates..."
"..."
"In the end, we all died on the fifteenth day of the apocalypse."
Yu Dong recounted everything they had experienced together in his past life.
After he finished, tears shimmered in Liu Ye’ye’s eyes.
"So... the Häagen-Dazs from yesterday, that was from you, wasn’t it, Senior?"
"Yes."
"Senior, you’re so kind."
Deeply moved, Liu Ye’ye wiped the corners of her eyes, as if she had personally lived through the apocalypse herself.
Then, she remembered something important. "What about my dad? What happened to him?"
"Hmm... you never mentioned him."
"Oh..."
Liu Ye’ye looked crestfallen. With her intelligence, she had likely already guessed what had happened.
Then, Liu Ye’ye managed a smile.
"So, Senior, are you here to recruit me as your teammate?"
"That’s right. I need your help."
"Okay."
"Huh?"
Yu Dong never expected recruiting Liu Ye’ye would be so easy!
’I follow her for a bit, we eat some ice cream and chat... and that’s it? She’s in?’
He didn’t even need to use the predictions he’d prepared!
"Liu Ye’ye, I need to be clear, this is extremely serious. If you’re going to join the team, you’ll need to follow my lead for the next six days, drop everything else, and dedicate all your money and energy to preparing for the apocalypse. Can you do that?"
"I can, but I have one condition..."
"To save your dad?"
"Yes. If it’s a sudden outbreak like you said... there’s a chance he won’t be infected. We just have to get him to stay here in the building, locked in an apartment. If he doesn’t turn, he can be part of our team. And if he does... he won’t be a threat to anyone else."
"No problem."
Yu Dong extended his hand. "Welcome back, Liu Ye’ye."
"Mhm!"
Liu Ye’ye gently placed her small hand in Yu Dong’s warm one. He gave it a firm squeeze, and she felt an unparalleled sense of resolve from his grip.
"Senior, if you don’t mind... I’ll go bake a fruit pizza for you."
"Could you make an extra one? I have two friends who haven’t eaten yet."
"Sure."
Liu Ye’ye went into her kitchen to start baking.
Sitting here once again after his rebirth, Yu Dong felt a bit dazed.
After his rebirth, he had tried to reassemble his old team, even roping in his two closest roommates. He’d gone so far as to reveal his secret to earn their trust, but they just wanted to see him make a fool of himself in seven days.
In contrast, the pre-apocalypse Liu Ye’ye, the person he knew the least, believed him without a second thought.
The feeling was bizarre.
’Why does Liu Ye’ye have this... strange trust in me?’
’Is it a side effect of my rebirth?’
Yu Dong wasn’t sure, but since his objective was complete, he decided not to dwell on it for now. There would be plenty of time to figure it out after the apocalypse began.
"Ye Ye, how much money do you have on hand right now?"
Yu Dong asked as he ate the pizza.
"I have a little over fifty thousand... It’s not much. If we need more money, I can pick up a few extra guzheng lessons tomorrow."
"Don’t worry about it. Time is more valuable to us right now. Do you shop online often?"
"A lot. My drone, robot dog, phone, and tablet are all from Jingdong. I spend several thousand a month shopping online."
"Then your credit limit should be high. You can probably borrow a lot more money than the rest of us..."
"Yeah, I think it is pretty high. I also have credit lines with Jingdong and Alipay, plus Pinduoduo’s ’buy now, pay later’ service. I can get a lot of stuff with those."
"That’s more than enough." Liu Ye’ye’s credit limit alone was probably higher than the other three of them combined.
Liu Ye’ye’s spending habits made her a top-tier customer on all the major shopping sites. With her high monthly transaction volume, the amount she could borrow would be huge.
"Wait, did you just say... a robot dog? You have a robot dog? I never saw you use it in my past life."
"Oh, it’s a quadruped robot dog. I lent it to my roommate. Do we need that too?"
"Need it? We absolutely need it! That thing will be incredibly useful in the apocalypse—perfect for distracting zombies and exploring tight spaces a drone can’t get into. Get it back tomorrow!"
"Oh, in that case... we could also buy some tracked robot rovers. They’re pretty cheap. I bought one last year that can go shopping for me. It has no problem with stairs and can even carry things."
"HSSSSS..."
An image was already forming in Yu Dong’s mind. With a few modifications, these little gadgets would give them an almost unfair advantage against the zombies!
"Liu Ye’ye, you’re a genius!"
With Liu Ye’ye joining the team early this time, Yu Dong felt like his whole perspective had been blown wide open.
He had been stuck thinking about traditional ways to fight zombies, like using spears and explosives.
But Liu Ye’ye, already on the cutting edge of consumer technology, had just offered him a completely new angle.
