The concrete utility tunnels beneath Saint Jude’s Medical Center smelled of damp lime, copper wiring, and sewer gas.

Forty feet below the intensive recovery pavilion where Rhea lay under the constant hum of life support wards, the primary drainage canal echoed with the quiet, rhythmic splashing of rubber soled tactical boots. Six operatives clad in matte gray combat wetsuits advanced in a tight diamond formation. Their gear bore no national flags, no guild serial numbers, and no reflective seams. Their carbines were fitted with heavy carbon suppressors and charged with cryogenic frost cartridges designed to paralyze biological targets without triggering acoustic security sensors.

At the head of the formation walked Agent Cross.

The veteran French contractor held a miniature digital scanner close to his visor, watching a pulsating amber wave synchronize with the ambient mana frequency of the hospital foundation above. Cross tapped the side of his throat microphone, his voice barely rising above the drip of dirty condensation from the overhead pipe joints.

"Frequency confirmed," Cross whispered, his accent clipped and devoid of hesitation. "The ward on the fourth floor is anchored to a Sovereign bloodline signature. The girl is inside. The coastal blockade drew their main force eighty miles east to the shelf. We have an eight minute extraction window before the municipal garrison notices the grid bypass."

A young operative behind him checked the pneumatic breach charge mounted to his chest harness. "Lead, what if the local shadow constructs intercept us in the stairwell?"

Cross did not slow his pace. "The reports from Portsmouth confirmed that the Sovereign entity controls four thousand dead soldiers on the water. A necromancer cannot project refined kinetic mass across eighty miles of open territory while simultaneously fighting warships. The shadows stationed in this city are hollow sentries running on automated patrol loops. We bag the asset, inject the neuro-stabilizer, and exit through the western sewer outlet."

The team rounded a sweeping curve in the tunnel, stepping onto the dry maintenance walkway where the auxiliary power junction was housed.

Ahead lay the heavy iron fire door leading to the central elevator shaft.

Above the steel lintel, the single yellow maintenance bulb flickered once, then extinguished with a faint pop of shattered filament.

The tunnel fell into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Cross raised his left fist, signaling an instant halt. The six operatives raised their carbines, the green phosphorescent reticles of their night vision goggles sweeping across the damp concrete walls and rusted iron piping.

The dripping of sewer water had stopped.

The air in the tunnel grew rapidly colder, dropping twenty degrees in less than three seconds until the breath inside Cross’s lungs turned into jagged needles of frost.

"Form a perimeter," Cross commanded, his thumb sliding the fire selector of his suppressed carbine from safe to semi-automatic. "Thermal sensors on the ceiling."

The green digital displays inside their visors wavered with sudden static.

From the black water of the drainage canal three paces to their left, the liquid surface did not ripple; it sank into a motionless, glassy mirror of pure obsidian darkness.

A tall figure stepped out of the shadow pool, rising smoothly into the subterranean gloom.

Renan’s dark woolen coat hung loose around his shoulders, untouched by the brackish water beneath his boots. His violet pupils burned with a slow, heavy luminescence that cast long, unnatural silhouettes across the concrete vaulting. In his right hand, the seven inch void dagger rested loosely, its matte black spine humming with the dense argent resonance he had ripped from the star-metal blade of the Silver Round.

The six operatives did not yell. They were elite operators trained to kill S-Rank anomaly beasts in silent breach operations.

The two point men fired instantly.

Four suppressed cryogenic rounds hissed through the freezing tunnel, tracing pale blue condensation trails toward Renan’s throat and center mass.

Renan did not dodge. He did not blink.

He took half a step forward, bringing his left palm up in a casual, sweeping arc.

A localized compression of kinetic gravity snapped into place three inches from his skin. The four supersonic rounds hit the invisible boundary and flattened into paper-thin lead discs, dropping uselessly onto the concrete walkway with light metallic clicks.

Before the spent brass from the rifles could hit the floor, a second shadow detached itself from the ceiling directly above the rear guard.

Shadow Assassin Sylas dropped like a hunting hawk, his twin obsidian kukris flashing in the dark.

The blades severed the rear operative’s tactical harness and cervical spine before the man could turn his shoulder, his body collapsing into the shallow canal without a splash, swallowed instantly by the black pool waiting below.

"Contact rear!" the second operative screamed, spinning around with his carbine raised.

Sylas did not give him room to align his sights. The dark shadow flowed across the floorboards like spilled ink, rising beneath the operative’s guard and driving a black blade straight up through the man’s titanium jaw protector, pinning his skull to the concrete wall with a sickening crunch.

Cross stared at the massacre, the blood rushing into his ears with the force of a ruptured dam.

"You were eighty miles offshore four minutes ago," Cross gasped, his voice cracking beneath the suffocating pressure rolling off Renan’s frame. "The satellite Hermes Nine had you locked on the deck of the captured destroyer!"

Renan walked forward, the heels of his leather boots clicking sharply against the gravel.

"A king who abandons his family to watch water splash against rocks is a fool, Cross," Renan spoke softly, each word landing like an iron hammer inside the operative’s skull. "Did you truly believe Victor would leave my sister’s foundation unprotected while we cleared the British rubbish from the strait?"

Cross dropped his rifle.

With the frantic speed of a condemned man, he drew a small silver canister from his tactical vest, his thumb hovering over the red detonator pin. "Take one more step and I trigger the mana destabilizer! It will collapse the hospital foundation above us! The girl dies in the rubble with the rest of this city!"

Renan stopped five paces away, tilting his head slightly.

"You threaten to drop a building on me," Renan said, the corner of his lips pulling back in cold amusement. "In a city where every stone answers to my core."

Renan flicked his index finger.

A hairline fracture of silver-violet light crossed the five feet of empty air between them.

The silver canister in Cross’s hand split cleanly down the center, followed instantly by the three middle fingers of his right hand. The severed metal and blood fell into the mud with a dull thud before the chemical detonator inside could even register the mechanical compression.

Cross fell to his knees, clutching his mangled, bleeding hand against his chest, screaming through clenched teeth as the freezing cold of the tunnel bit into his exposed bone.

The remaining two operatives threw down their weapons and pressed their faces flat against the slime coated walkway, trembling so violently that their composite helmets rattled against the stone.

Renan walked to where Cross knelt, stopping until the toe of his boot touched the operative’s knee.

He reached down with his left hand, his bare fingers clamping around the back of Cross’s neck with sixty tons of immovable grip strength, lifting the grown man three feet off the floor as if he were an empty coat.

"Who paid for your transport from Marseille?" Renan asked, his violet eyes locking onto Cross’s dilated pupils.

Cross coughed, dark blood foaming on his lips from the sheer atmospheric pressure crushing his lungs. "You... you will never breach the Alps, monster. The council... they have twenty tons of high grade cores waiting in Zurich. They will buy ten thousand hunters to grind your peninsula into dust."

Renan’s expression remained calm as winter ice.

"Then I shall thank them for gathering all the cores in one room," Renan whispered.

Renan did not twist the man’s neck. He simply channeled a narrow thread of his Sovereign mana directly through Cross’s spinal cord into his brainstem.

Cross’s body went rigid, his eyes rolling back until only the whites were visible, his heels drumming against the air in a brief, violent convulsion before sagging limp within Renan’s grip.

Renan released his fingers, letting the lifeless body tumble into the drainage canal.

The black pool boiled briefly, dragging Cross’s corpse down into the subterranean abyss where a hundred shadow soldiers waited to strip the gear from his bones.

Renan turned to the two surviving operatives who remained shivering on the walkway, their hands clasped over the backs of their necks in silent, desperate submission.

"Get up," Renan said softly.

The two men scrambled to their knees, their eyes wide with disbelief as they looked up at the young monarch standing over them in the dim yellow light.

"Pick up your radios," Renan continued, his voice echoing down the empty concrete corridor. "Call your masters in Geneva. Tell them their extraction failed. Tell them their courier is dead. And tell them that when I come to Switzerland to collect those cores, I will not bother using the sewer."

The two operatives grabbed their handsets with shaking fingers, scrambling over the slick walkways in a blind panic toward the surface exit.

From the shadows behind Renan, Boss Victor emerged from the utility hatch, a fresh cigar between his teeth, holding a secure satellite terminal in his rough hands.

"The coastal wire just cleared, Sovereign," Victor said, exhaling a thick cloud of blue smoke into the damp vault. "The British Admiralty just released their public statement. They conceded the strait. But London didn’t call for a ceasefire."

Renan wiped a stray speck of grease from his lapel with the back of his thumb.

"What did they call for, Victor?"

Victor tapped the glass display of the terminal, his rugged face hardening into stone.

"They just invoked Article Seven of the Atlantic Accord," Victor replied, the blue screen reflecting off his scarred brow. "General Vance has been granted full supreme theater command. The American fleet has deployed their experimental kinetic platform forty miles south, and their super dreadnought just cleared the outer shoals."
