Chapter 392: Chapter 392
Mark found the whole idea utterly ridiculous.
How could that possibly be true?
There was no way he could fall in love with Suzy. He couldn’t possibly fall in love with anyone.
The reason he had stayed by Suzy’s side, the reason he had protected her, was simply because he owed her a debt.
She had saved his life, and he protected her in return to repay that debt. Wasn’t that only natural?
Love... How could there be so many complicated feelings involved?
He would never fall in love with anyone.
Mark tugged helplessly at the corner of his mouth, thinking that Nate really had been talking nonsense.
The man had even spouted such ridiculous nonsense right before dying, leaving Mark inexplicably irritated.
Besides, Suzy had already removed the curse inside his body. Even if he didn’t complete the mission, what difference did it make?
It didn’t matter. Not at all. He was free now. He no longer needed to complete those damn missions.
He didn’t need to!
After thinking it over carefully, Mark decided that his actions were perfectly reasonable. Whatever Nate had said about love and romantic feelings was nothing more than absurd nonsense.
He was only staying with Suzy because he wanted to watch the show.
Hadn’t the first act already begun?
Mark closed his eyes. Suddenly, he felt a little tired.
The familiar, faint fragrance lingering around him gave him an unexpected sense of comfort. Before he realized it, he had drifted off to sleep.
Up front, Suzy continued driving, but she was also keeping an eye on what was happening in the back.
When she heard nothing, she guessed that Mark had probably fallen asleep.
She didn’t turn around again, instead keeping all her attention on the road.
The road sign ahead told her that she had reached L Town. They were now very close to P City.
According to the map, P City was only fifty kilometers away. If she drove a little faster, they could get there within an hour.
The RV passed smoothly through L Town.
Suzy noticed that the closer they got to P City, the better the roads became. Not only that, but there were noticeably more vehicles around.
Before passing through L Town, Suzy had been the only vehicle on the road. Now, several more had appeared within her field of vision.
Trucks, pickup trucks, off-road vehicles, even motorcycles. Clearly, just like her, they were all headed for the P City base.
Half an hour later, Suzy and the other vehicles finally arrived at the P City base.
She didn’t have any connections here. Although she knew Adam was inside, she had no idea what his current situation was. There was almost no chance she could use Adam to get special treatment.
So Suzy could only join the line with everyone else.
The process for entering the P City base was similar to entering the X Base.
Everyone had to queue up, with vehicles and pedestrians being separated into different lines.
After going through the process once before, Suzy was already familiar with it.
However, far more people were trying to enter the P City base than the X Base. From where Suzy was waiting, she could barely even see the front of the line.
The line was moving painfully slowly, too. It advanced only a little every twenty minutes or so.
At this rate, Suzy would probably have to wait until the next day before she could enter the base.
Everything Nate had said earlier had been complete bullshit!
She had to admit, the P City base was far more sophisticated than the X City base. There were even armed soldiers patrolling the surrounding area.
Perhaps precisely because of this, no one dared cause trouble.
Everyone waited quietly in line.
Suzy leaned back against her seat, idly snacking while staring at the map displayed on her tablet.
She had already reached P City and was now roughly halfway through her return journey.
She had no idea how long they would be delayed here.
"I wonder how Uncle is doing."
Suzy sighed softly.
She had no idea what was happening with Adam either.
If Adam had been forced into his current situation, she would do everything in her power to help him escape those people.
But if... What if he hadn’t been forced?
Once the thought entered her mind, Suzy couldn’t shake it.
Perhaps Adam really had been forced into it at first, but later willingly agreed...
To be honest, Suzy didn’t know what she would do if that turned out to be the case.
I’ll deal with it when the time comes, she thought.
Waiting in line was painfully slow.
Nearly two hours had passed, yet Suzy’s vehicle had barely moved.
She had already eaten enough snacks that she didn’t want to look at another one.
At this rate, she had no idea when the wait would finally end.
Suzy sighed and glanced back toward where Mark was lying.
He was still asleep, and apparently sleeping quite soundly. Every now and then, she could hear him shifting and tugging at the blanket.
Up ahead, quite a few people had grown restless and were getting out of their vehicles to stretch their legs.
The soldiers stationed nearby didn’t stop them.
A gray pickup truck was directly in front of Suzy’s RV. A man in his early thirties climbed out and looked around, making a quick inspection of the area.
After confirming that everything was fine, he said something to the people inside the truck.
A moment later, the rear passenger door opened, and a woman with a slightly rounded belly stepped out.
From inside the RV, Suzy watched as the couple walked around their vehicle instead of immediately getting back inside. Clearly, they were stretching their bodies after sitting for too long.
Seeing them made Suzy realize that she had also been sitting for far too long.
She should stretch a little too.
She opened the door and jumped out, both feet landing firmly on the pavement.
Suzy stretched lazily, closed the door, rolled her stiff shoulders, and walked a few steps forward.
She lifted her head and looked at the outline of the P City base in the distance.
She couldn’t help marveling inwardly.
Now this is something.
The gray-white walls ahead were much taller than Suzy had imagined, standing more than ten meters high. The walls were visibly massive, with obvious signs of reinforcement across their surface.
Every few dozen meters stood a protruding watchtower, each one equipped with searchlights and weapons.
Suzy narrowed her eyes.
She could make out guards patrolling along the top of the walls, moving in formation with synchronized steps. They were clearly well-trained.
The main gate of the P City base was also much wider than the one at X Base, easily wide enough for two heavy trucks to pass through side by side.
The gate itself was made of dark gray metal, reinforced with horizontal steel beams. Above it hung an enormous metal sign bearing three large characters:
P City Base.
Not far away stood several more signs, each bearing the words:
WELCOME TO P CITY BASE.
"P City Base... How much longer do we have to wait?"
Suzy stared at the seemingly endless line ahead and couldn’t help sighing inwardly.
So far away.
So much waiting.
And, more importantly—
So boring.
Having nothing to do while waiting was perhaps one of the most painfully boring things imaginable.
Suzy walked around the RV once, carefully checking every side of the vehicle.
When the people in the other vehicles saw someone getting out to stretch, they couldn’t sit still anymore either.
One after another, they climbed out.
Most of them had been driving for hours or even longer to get here, leaving their bodies stiff and sore. They hadn’t dared stop to rest along the way, but now that they finally had the opportunity, everyone took advantage of it to stretch and loosen up.
As more and more people got out of their vehicles, the area gradually became livelier.
Conversations rose and fell all around them.
Some people complained about how long they had been waiting. Others anxiously wondered when the line would finally reach them. A few people with more relaxed dispositions gathered together and chatted casually to pass the time.
