Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 69: The General’s Back
The southern wall collapsed with a deafening roar. Reinforced concrete fractured into enormous slabs, crashing into the trench below as steel support beams twisted and threw brilliant showers of sparks across the dark valley.
Thick grey dust swallowed the entire southern perimeter. Sirens wailed through the smoke, their pitch distorted by the chaotic pressure waves tearing through the air.
"The wall is down!" a frantic voice screamed through every Sol Haven communication channel. "Sector Four has failed!"
Rhyder stood directly beneath the collapsing upper structure, his combat uniform heavy with grime and alien blood. Smoke curled off his rifle, but his posture remained absolute and unyielding.
"General, fall back!" an officer yelled, grabbing a piece of rebar to steady himself against the tremor. "The southern sector is lost!"
Rhyder did not budge an inch. His dark eyes remained fixed on the expanding breach in the dust cloud.
Beyond the shattered barrier, hundreds of Zerg poured through the gap. Their black, chitinous armor glistened beneath the flickering yellow emergency floodlights as their mandibles clicked in anticipation.
"Hold this position," Rhyder ordered, his voice cutting through the ringing in his squad’s ears.
"General, there are too many--"
"I said hold it!" Rhyder barked, his voice dropping into an icy command that left no room for debate.
He raised his heavy assault rifle, racking the bolt. The weapon settled smoothly against his shoulder as the front line of beasts surged into view.
The first Zerg leaped over a chunk of fallen masonry, its razor-sharp claw outstretched. Rhyder pulled the trigger without a flicker of hesitation.
A heavy kinetic blast echoed off the ruined concrete. The creature’s head shattered into a cloud of dark fluid, its lifeless torso skidding across the dirt to bump against Rhyder’s boot.
Another Zerg lunged instantly from his left flank, its jaw opening wide. He twisted his torso aside, grabbed its jagged forearm, and used the monster’s momentum to hurl it back into two approaching beasts.
Three more armored beasts closed in, surrounding him in a tight semicircle. The air grew heavy with the stench of ozone and sharp alien pheromones.
Rhyder unclipped his serrated combat blade with his free hand. Elemental energy surged through his veins, coating the steel blade in a blinding, humming aura.
The luminous blade flashed through the dusty air in two rapid arcs. One Zerg collapsed, its chest cavity split open, quickly followed by another that collapsed onto its knees.
A third creature struck him hard across the chest with its heavy, spade-like limb. Rhyder staggered backward, his combat boots scraping deep grooves into the loose gravel and broken stone.
He recovered his footing instantly, steadying his breathing. "Come on," he growled, swinging the glowing blade into a low guard.
The swarm answered with a collective, guttural roar. Dozens of glowing crimson eyes materialized inside the swirling dust, locking onto him.
Inside the underground medical station, another violent tremor rattled the surgical lamps hanging overhead. Dust rattled down from the ventilation grates, settling on the sterile metallic surfaces.
Raviah wiped sweat and dried blood from her forehead, her gaze darting up to the vibrating ceiling. "What is General Rhyder’s current position?"
The communications officer standing near the tactical display monitor tapped frantically on his terminal. His face drained of color as the real-time thermal overlay rendered on the screen.
"Doctor..." the officer stammered, his fingers freezing over the keys.
"Speak up," Raviah demanded, stepping away from her patient and approaching the desk. "What is happening out there?"
"He is completely surrounded," the officer whispered, turning the screen slightly toward her.
Raviah locked her eyes on the live feed relayed from a high-altitude tactical drone. The high-definition camera zoomed in through the smoke, revealing the absolute chaos at the southern breach.
Rhyder stood alone on a mound of fractured concrete at the center of the breach. Black Zerg blood drenched his arm guards and tactical vest, while his rifle magazine clicked empty in his hand.
Yet he did not yield, swinging his blade into every creature that dared enter his striking reach. He moved like a man who had already accepted his fate, fighting with lethal, tragic precision.
A massive bio-armored Zerg flanked him from behind, raising a heavy, spiked limb above his blind spot. Rhyder turned a fraction of a second too late to dodge the blow.
The heavy spike came swinging down toward his neck.
"Rhyder!" Raviah’s voice broke, a sharp gasp escaping her throat as her hand gripped the edge of the metal console.
The creature’s strike crashed violently against Rhyder’s translucent elemental barrier. A sickening sound rang out as the force field fractured into fine web-like cracks, knocking him down onto one knee.
More Zerg closed in, sensing his temporary vulnerability, their claws dragging along the stone.
Raviah’s hands began to tremble, her fingernails biting deep into her palms. Every rational instinct built on her medical background told her to remain inside the reinforced bunker.
Her Root was still developing and unstable, its absolute limits completely unknown to her. She had no clear gauge of what releasing an unfiltered burst of her energy might do to her own body or Core.
Yet the memory of her past life burned through her mind with unbearable clarity. She had already watched this man die once while trying to reach her, and she refused to let history repeat itself before her eyes.
"Open the southern medical corridor access hatch," Raviah said, her tone dropping into a terrifyingly steady calm.
The nearby medic stared at her in utter disbelief. "Doctor, that sector is outside the designated safe zone! It’s crawling with hostile forces!"
"I am aware," Raviah replied, stepping away from the console and striding purposefully toward the heavy blast doors.
She paused right at the threshold, her feet rooted to the cold floor tiles. Slowly, she closed her eyes and turned her perception inward, reaching for the core of her power.
Deep within her consciousness, something vast and ancient stirred in response to her call. Her Root hummed, resonating with a frequency that vibrated through every bone in her frame.
Until this moment, she had treated her power as a delicate instrument meant only for healing individual bodies. She had used it to bind torn tissue, suppress hemorrhaging, and keep dying men breathing.
However, the Root was not a passive tool bound by traditional medical rules. It was a living, reactive energy structure, now responding to the sheer scale of slaughter happening on the battlefield above.
It reacted to the thousands of hostile biological signatures crawling over Sol Haven’s soil. It drew power from the atmospheric energy saturated by elemental discharges and burning Zerg blood.
Raviah opened her eyes, her pupils reflecting a pale, luminous light. "Rhyder," she whispered softly into the empty corridor.
She let go of her restraint, releasing the full weight of her Root into the atmosphere.
A massive, translucent energy wave erupted outward from her position, bursting through the medical bay doors and sweeping over the concrete ramparts. It rolled across the blood-soaked terrain like a silent, glowing ocean tide.
Every Zerg touched by the expanding aura immediately halted and convulsed violently. The hidden crystalline pathways running through their bodies flashed with wild, erratic energy beneath their chitinous shells.
A massive siege Zerg collapsed onto its side, its limbs twitching uncontrollably as its internal bio-energy backfired. Another beast fell right behind it, followed by dozens more across the outer trench.
The energy wave penetrated their exotic biological structures, violently disrupting the synchronized flow between their nervous systems and internal Cores.
High-pitched screeches echoed across the valley as the creatures clawed at their own heads in agony. Their terrifying, hive-mind formation shattered in an instant, devolving into utter chaos.
Some beasts stumbled blindly into one another, while others simply collapsed dead where they stood as their internal networks fried. The unstoppable advance of the Zerg swarm came to a complete, grinding halt.
Every surviving soldier positioned on the upper parapets froze, staring down at the scene in stunned silence.
Rhyder slowly lifted his head, pushing himself up off his knee with his blade. Through the shimmering translucent energy sweeping across the dusty ground, he saw a familiar silhouette standing beyond the inner defensive line.
Raviah’s dark hair whipped violently around her face in the rising atmospheric wind. Her outstretched hands glowed with a pale, ethereal light that seemed to command the surrounding environment.
She was no longer merely tending to the wounded behind safe walls. She was actively dictating the terms of the entire battlefield.
"Raviah..." Rhyder muttered, his breath catching in his throat as he watched her force back the horde.
The Root expanded even further, saturating the earth down to the outer treeline. Zerg after Zerg dropped into the mud, their heavy chitinous armor completely untouched, yet their internal energy signatures completely extinguished.
The surviving creatures backed away from the glowing perimeter, letting out distressed clicks. For the first time since the siege had begun, the relentless swarm turned around and retreated into the dark forest.
Rhyder stood up fully, wiping a streak of black blood from his cheek with the back of his tactical glove. He kept his eyes locked onto Raviah, unable to look away from her illuminated form.
She met his gaze across the ruined battlefield, her breathing heavy as her energy gradually settled.
For several long seconds, neither of them moved or spoke over the ambient crackle of dying fires and settling dust. Rhyder realized the full truth of what had just occurred: she had exposed her ultimate secret and risked everything to keep him alive.
High above the battlefield, military surveillance drones hovered silently, their high-resolution lenses tracking every movement. They recorded the energy fluctuations, the spatial distribution, and the biological collapse of the Zerg units down to the microsecond.
Deep inside Sol Haven’s subterranean military intelligence center, an analyst stared at the incoming data feeds in disbelief, his hands trembling over the keyboard.
"Run a complete Elemental classification check right now," the chief intelligence officer ordered, leaning over the analyst’s shoulder.
The system processed Raviah’s energy signature, running it through global elemental databases. The numerical readings spiked past standard limits, turning the metrics on the central monitor from blue to a bright, warning red.
The analyst’s jaw dropped as he re-read the processed output. "That is... that’s structurally impossible..."
"What does the scanner say?" the officer barked, pressing his hands against the desk.
The terminal screen flashed with a series of high-priority system alerts:
[UNREGISTERED ELEMENTAL ABILITY DETECTED]
[AREA OF EFFECT: EXTREME]
[HOSTILE BIOLOGICAL DISRUPTION: CONFIRMED]
[ENERGY OUTPUT: STRATEGIC-LEVEL]
The entire command room fell into a dead silence as the final summary settled on the main screen.
"Doctor Raviah Solomon..." the analyst whispered, reading the newly assigned file header.
A secondary warning popped up, locking her file with maximum military security clearance:
[STRATEGIC-LEVEL ELEMENTAL]
[THREAT/ASSET CLASSIFICATION: PENDING]
The officers exchanged uneasy glances in the dim fluorescent light of the command center. They were no longer looking at Raviah Solomon as a brilliant, quiet doctor who ran the medical bay, they had just witnessed a living strategic weapon capable of turning the tide of an apocalyptic war.
