The continuous, rhythmic tremors beneath Sol Haven did not stall Raviah Solomon’s movements. If anything, the deep vibrations forced her to act with greater speed and focus.

"Seal the underground containment laboratory immediately," she ordered, her voice cutting through the rising noise. "The Core remains secured subterranean. No one touches it without my direct authorization."

Rhyder Drakeheir issued parallel commands to his elite squad, directing them to secure Sector Seven and set a perimeter around the agricultural plots. But before either group could initiate a deeper sweep of the soil, a high-pitched siren wailed from the farm’s western defensive grid.

The monitoring interface flashed bright crimson warnings across the main terminal:

[PERIMETER ALERT]

[UNKNOWN BIOLOGICAL MOVEMENT DETECTED].

Raviah’s head snapped toward the digital display. "Identify the location."

"Western livestock corridor!" the security officer shouted, tapping his console furiously. "Something just breached the secondary chain-link barrier!"

Rhyder drew his heavy sidearm with practiced ease. "Pull up the live feed."

The high-definition camera feed displayed a grainy view of the western boundary. For several tense seconds, nothing moved except the swaying tall grass.

Then, the dense boundary bushes exploded outward in a shower of shredded leaves. A massive quadrupeds lunged into the open field.

Raviah froze in place, her blood running icy cold in her veins. She recognized the posture instantly.

It had once been an ordinary wolf, but its biology was grotesquely altered. Its frame was twice the size of a wild timber wolf, its hyper-developed shoulder muscles straining against patches of coarse, dark fur.

Its forelimbs had grown unnaturally long, ending in black claws that tore deep gouges into the soil. Its eyes glowed with an unnatural, sickly yellow light, and dark, thick veins pulsed visibly beneath its skin.

Raviah stared at the monster in horror. She had fought hundreds of these beasts during the dark years of her previous life.

"That is impossible," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Rhyder stepped up beside her, his sharp eyes fixed on the display. "You recognize this creature?"

"It is a mutated wolf," Raviah said, her expression hardening into a cold mask.

The security officer stared at the screen in disbelief. "Mutated? From what?"

Raviah ignored his question as her mind raced back to her memories. In her past timeline, predatory animals had not undergone such aggressive physical transformations until months after the initial environmental collapse.

Waves of atmospheric radiation and toxic energy had slowly corrupted wildlife over time. A fully evolved mutated beast should not be roaming the earth before the apocalypse had even officially begun.

"Lock down the western agricultural sector right now!" she commanded.

Her order came seconds too late. The mutated wolf launched its heavy body against the reinforced steel perimeter fence.

The metal groaned under the force, thick chain-link buckling inward like wire mesh. The beast recoiled briefly, digging its elongated claws into the dirt to gather momentum before slamming its weight into the barrier once more.

The structural supports snapped with a deafening crack.

"Evacuate all non-combat personnel!" Rhyder shouted through his tactical comms.

Security personnel scattered across the sector, blowing emergency whistles and directing farm hands toward the concrete bunkers. Panic erupted as workers abandoned their tools and sprinted across the open ground.

Among the fleeing crowd, a young agricultural worker tripped over a discarded irrigation pipe, tumbling hard onto the gravel path.

"Help me!" he yelled, scrambling frantically to regain his footing.

Raviah saw him fall from her vantage point.

"Get up!" she screamed.

The mutated wolf pivoted its heavy head, its glowing yellow eyes locking onto the fallen human. It let out a low, guttural snarl and lunged across the grass with terrifying speed.

The terrified worker scrambled backward, but his boot was firmly wedged beneath a heavy iron pipe frame. The distance closed in a blur of gray fur and flashing claws.

Its massive jaws unhinged, exposing rows of jagged teeth dripping with dark saliva.

Rhyder moved first. He sprinted across the field with astounding speed, closing the distance in seconds while unholstering a specialized combat blade.

The wolf lunged downward for the kill. Rhyder slid beneath the creature’s sweeping front claw, the razor-sharp talons shattering the metal irrigation frame above his head.

Twisting his body, Rhyder drove his combat blade upward with immense force, slicing a deep gash across the beast’s throat. Thick, black blood sprayed across the green grass.

The wolf howled in pain, its massive body stumbling sideways. Rhyder seized the fallen worker by his collar, yanking him free from the trap and shoving him backward.

"Get to the bunker now!" Rhyder yelled. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

The worker scrambled up and ran without looking back.

The beast shook its heavy head, roaring as the black blood oozing from its neck began to clot at an unnatural speed. The severed flesh knitted together before their eyes.

Raviah’s eyes widened in realization.

"Rhyder!" she called out. "Do not give it time to regenerate!"

The wolf lunged a second time, its long claws snapping through the air. Rhyder raised his blade to parry the strike, the impact sending sparks flying across the field as metal met dense, mutated bone.

The sheer force of the blow pushed the General back several feet, his boots tearing furrows into the earth. The creature possessed strength far exceeding any natural predator.

Rhyder pivoted sharply, dodging a violent snap of its jaws, then lunged forward to drive his blade through the underside of its jaw. The reinforced steel pierced cleanly through bone and brain.

The beast stiffened, its yellow eyes dimming as its massive body collapsed heavily into the dirt.

A heavy silence fell over the western field, broken only by the hum of the perimeter alarms. Rhyder stood over the corpse, wiping black blood from his blade with a rag.

"Is the civilian secured?" Rhyder called out to his squad.

"Civilian is safe and inside the shelter!" a security officer responded.

Raviah approached the carcass cautiously, pulling a handheld biological scanner from her coat. She swept the optical sensor over the dead beast’s chest, watching the digital dials spike into red territory.

The monitor flashed:

[ABNORMAL ENERGY SIGNATURE]

[ROOT-LIKE BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY DETECTED].

"Look at its chest cavity," Raviah said, her voice dropping.

Rhyder crouched beside her, his eyes following her pointer. "What am I looking at?"

Raviah carefully cut through the creature’s mutated hide using a surgical scalpel from her kit. Beneath dense layers of hyper-dense muscle and bone lay a dark, crystalline structure resting beside its heart.

The crystalline node pulsed with a faint, crimson light.

Raviah’s breath hitched in her throat as memories of the future flooded her mind. She had performed autopsies on hundreds of these monsters in ruined field hospitals.

It was a beast Core.

Rhyder stared at the glowing stone nestled inside the flesh. "This animal grew an energy organ?"

"Yes," Raviah replied softly, her fingers trembling slightly. "It is a Core."

Before she could place her scanner closer, the crystalline structure flared with an intense crimson light. The handheld monitor in her grip screeched a loud warning:

[CORE ENERGY DETECTED]

[ENERGY ABSORPTION BEGINNING].

Raviah pulled her hand back in shock. The Core inside the dead beast was not fading. It was actively expanding, drawing in ambient energy from the surrounding air. And far beneath the dirt of Sol Haven, the buried Core answered with a violent, deep tremor.
