Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 42: The Core
The seismic tremors continued to shudder through the earth in heavy, rhythmic waves. Raviah stood resolutely beneath the scorched canvas of the damaged monitoring canopy, shielding her eyes with one forearm against the searing heat emanating from Daniel’s wild, white flame.
The diagnostic equipment surrounded them was screaming in unison, emitting high-pitched, metallic warnings that pierced the dusty air. Digital displays flickered violently as every sensor maxed out its readings:
[ROOT ACTIVITY: CRITICAL]
[EXTERNAL ENERGY RESONANCE: 97%]
[SUBTERRANEAN ENERGY SURGE DETECTED]
"Everyone fall back right now!" Raviah ordered, her voice cutting cleanly through the roaring chaos.
The remaining farm workers scrambled over one another to reach the safety of the armored utility vehicles. Armed security personnel immediately formed a defensive semicircle between Daniel and the retreating civilians, rifles raised toward the buckled soil.
Daniel remained trapped at the absolute epicenter of the violent energy disturbance. His muscles strained and locked up tight, his body shaking so violently that his teeth rattled loudly.
The white flame encircling his hands no longer behaved like ordinary, chaotic fire. It twisted directly upward in a tight, concentrated spiral, behaving as though an invisible vacuum beneath the earth was pulling the energy downward.
Raviah’s sharp gaze dropped toward his boots. The damp soil beneath his feet was spider-webbing with deep, jagged fissures.
"Daniel, listen to me!" she called out, stepping closer despite the blistering heat. "Do not fight the energy!"
"I... I can’t hold it back!" Daniel gasped, tears of sheer agony evaporating off his flushed cheeks before they could fall.
"Then stop trying to suppress the flame!" she instructed, her voice steady and commanding. "Release your control and focus entirely on your breathing."
His wide, terrified eyes locked onto hers amidst the blinding white glare.
"Inhale deeply through your nose," Raviah directed, taking a deliberate step forward.
He sucked in a ragged breath, his chest rising sharply.
"Now exhale slowly," she urged, keeping her palms open and outstretched.
The roaring white spiral flickered slightly, its wild intensity dimming by a fraction.
"Inhale again," she commanded.
He obeyed instantly, forcing his trembling shoulders to drop.
"Exhale," she said.
The blinding flames contracted inward, drawing closer to his pale skin.
Raviah immediately recognized the underlying bio-energetic mechanism at play. Daniel’s newly awakened Root was not generating this staggering volume of heat independently.
An immense, external force deep beneath the soil was actively feeding his cellular core. Whatever was buried down there had recognized the activation of an elemental Root and was violently locking onto it.
A sudden, massive seismic shudder split the terrain with a deafening crack.
A deep fissure opened across the western border of Field Twelve, swallowing several rows of irrigation pipes. Workers shrieked in terror as meters of topsoil collapsed inward, creating a shallow, smoking crater.
Beneath the displaced dark earth, a cold metallic sheen caught the bright afternoon sunlight. Raviah froze in her tracks, her eyes narrowing as she studied the exposed crater.
"Nobody move," she commanded, her voice lacing with absolute authority. "Keep the perimeter secure."
She reached her arm into the air, her hand dipping effortlessly into the transparent ripples of her personal spatial dimension. With a subtle flick of her wrist, she retrieved a pair of heavy, insulated thermal gloves and pulled them tightly over her hands.
She approached the edge of the smoking fissure, her boots crunching on loose gravel. The view into the crater grew stranger the closer she leaned over the rim.
Thick, blackened roots had wrapped themselves tightly around a dense, isolated object buried beneath the crushed bed of clay. The artifact was roughly the size and shape of a human heart.
It was clearly not an organic organ, nor did it resemble any ordinary industrial alloy. Its surface was a dark, polished silver, woven through with faint crimson veins that glowed with an eerie light.
Those red veins pulsed in a steady, deliberate rhythm. With every single beat of the crimson lines, Daniel’s white flame flared in perfect synchronization.
Raviah’s expression hardened.
"How fascinating..." she muttered under her breath.
She reached into her coat and pulled out a high-frequency bio-scanner, extending its sensor probe over the crater. The digital interface immediately turned crimson, flooding with rapid warning prompts:
[UNKNOWN ENERGY DENSITY]
[COMPOSITION: UNIDENTIFIED]
[ENERGY STORAGE: ACTIVE]
[RESONANCE WITH HUMAN ROOT DETECTED].
She was looking at an artifact capable of storing and broadcasting raw elemental energy.
Using a set of long, insulated titanium tongs, she carefully pried the object free from the tangle of gripping black roots. The exact second the object was severed from the earth, Daniel collapsed onto his knees with a heavy thud.
The blinding white flame vanished instantly, leaving only faint wisps of smoke rising from his knuckles. The violent seismic trembling beneath the fields ceased completely, returning the farm to a sudden, ringing silence.
Raviah lowered the pulsing artifact into a heavy, transparent containment case, sealing the airtight latch with a sharp click. She turned her head, looking from the panting, exhausted farm hand toward the glowing box in her hands.
"So you were the trigger for his awakening," she whispered to the sealed case.
Or perhaps it was not merely a trigger. It functioned like a catalyst, an organic battery, or an atmospheric conductor.
The utter uncertainty of its exact origins troubled her far more than the physical threat it posed. She ran a secondary deep-tissue scan through the reinforced glass, but the diagnostic results returned only corrupted data streams.
No known terrestrial metal or interstellar alloy matched its molecular composition. No standard electrical power source could explain its staggering internal energy density.
She could not determine if it was an ancient technological relic, a biological mutation, or something forged by an unknown species.
"Doctor Solomon!" a sharp, deep voice called out from the perimeter line.
Raviah turned to see General Rhyder Drakeheir striding toward the crater, flanked by a squad of heavily armed elite soldiers. Dust covered his dark military fatigues, evidence of how fast he had rushed to the site of the seismic disturbance.
His piercing gaze locked immediately onto the pulsing containment box resting in her hands. "Report on the situation. What is that object?"
"I don’t have a definitive answer for you yet, General," Raviah replied smoothly, holding the box securely against her side.
Rhyder stopped a few paces away, his brow furrowing in deep suspicion. "You don’t know?"
"I do not," she stated plainly.
He approached the edge of the collapsed trench, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the scorched roots and cracked soil. "Where was it located?"
"Right here, buried several meters beneath the topsoil," she explained, pointing toward the crater. "It was encased within the same abnormal root network we retrieved near Sector Seven."
Rhyder looked back at the glowing box, watching the crimson veins pulse against the dark silver casing. "Is it emitting active energy signatures?"
"An immense, unprecedented amount," Raviah confirmed, checking the external radiation dial mounted on the case.
His sharp jaw tightened. "Could this be a weapon?"
"I cannot confirm that yet."
"An external power source?"
"Possibly."
"A classified military device?"
Raviah hesitated for a brief second, her eyes meeting his intense gaze. "I do not believe it belongs to any human military."
For a rare moment, Rhyder remained entirely silent, absorbing her blunt assessment. He stared at the pulsing object through the thick containment glass, his hand resting heavy on the side of his holster.
Raviah lowered her eyes, staring down at the dark silver surface inside the box. Something about its overall shape and internal energy pattern sent a cold shiver down her spine.
It was not because she had encountered this specific metallic object in her previous life. She had not. It was because she had seen something horrifyingly similar years later.
She remembered the dark, desperate years after the major cities had fallen to ruin. She remembered the bitter cold after the first apocalyptic winter, when surviving humans fought mutated beasts over scraps of frozen land.
She clearly remembered the grotesque, mutated carcasses of those monstrous creatures.
The massive, armored wolves with hyper-evolved muscles. The towering Zerg-like insects with razor-sharp carapaces. The serpentine horrors with glowing crystalline structures embedded deep within their flesh.
And nestled deep inside their chest cavities...
She remembered performing autopsies inside a dark, makeshift field hospital, cutting through hardened muscle and bone. Deep within a beast’s heart cavity lay a dense, hardened structure that pulsed with raw, unrefined energy.
Back then, the surviving researchers and hunters had given those internal energy units a simple name.
They called them Cores.
Raviah stared intently at the pulsing artifact sealed inside the case, her blood running ice-cold.
"Doctor?" Rhyder asked, noticing her sudden, rigid silence. "What have you realized?"
Raviah did not answer him right away, her mind racing back through her memories of the future timeline. The crystalline nodes harvested from mutated beasts in her past life had matched this exact bio-energetic resonance.
Yet this Core had appeared buried beneath her farm before the apocalypse had even officially begun.
Her fingers tightened around the metal handles of the containment case. "If my past medical observations are accurate..."
Rhyder leaned in slightly, waiting for her conclusion.
Raviah looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper against the howling wind. "This object is a Core."
Inside the sealed glass case, the crimson veins pulsed brightly once more. And deep beneath the shattered bedrock of Sol Haven, an answering tremor hummed in response.
