Chapter 2: Betrayed at the End of the World

Raviah stumbled backward as the shadows of the mutated beasts flooded through the shattered entrance.

The first creature lunged with open jaws, its razor-sharp teeth snapping inches from her throat. She barely managed to duck beneath its claws, feeling the rush of foul air pass over her head.

BOOM!

Its enormous, scale-covered body slammed into the concrete wall behind her, sending chunks of stone crashing to the floor.

Raviah turned and ran without looking back, knowing every inch of the hospital’s layout. She sprinted toward the emergency corridor, weaving between overturned beds and terrified survivors while frantic screams echoed around her.

"Doctor Solomon!" a young man cried out, grabbing her sleeve in desperation.

Raviah tore herself free from his desperate grip.

"Run!" she shouted over the chaos, pointing toward the fire escape.

The creature’s deafening roar shook the entire structure, shattering the glass lights overhead. She reached the rear stairwell just as another violent impact sent the floor trembling beneath her boots.

Suddenly, a heavy piece of flying masonry struck her upper back, throwing her balance off completely. Agony exploded across her ribs as she went tumbling down the concrete steps.

She hit the bottom landing hard, her vision flashing blinding white.

The leather strap of her medical bag snapped, sending the precious supplies skidding across the dusty floor. She reached for it instinctively, but a massive, curved claw smashed down onto the leather inches from her fingers.

Raviah crawled on her hands and knees, ignoring the sharp pain radiating through her side. She lost track of time as she dragged herself through the dark hall, driven only by the primal instinct to survive.

Eventually, she dragged her bruised body through a narrow service entrance and collapsed behind a stack of concrete barriers.

Through the gaps, she could see bright flames licking the ceiling of the main wing. The shelter she had spent over a year protecting was being devoured from within.

Raviah forced herself upright, gasping as her ribs screamed with every shallow breath. Warm blood trickled down her temple, stinging her eyes. She stumbled toward the survivors’ secure storage room, desperate to find an emergency kit, a bottle of water, or anything to dull the pain.

Instead, she stepped through the door and found completely empty shelves. Every wooden crate had been overturned and emptied.

The emergency rations, bottled water, and medical equipment she had spent months carefully rationing were all gone. Raviah stared at the barren room, her voice dropping to a hollow whisper.

"No..."

Footsteps echoed down the corridor, and a heavily armed guard emerged from the smoke.

Raviah’s heart lifted for a brief moment as she recognized him.

"Help me," she pleaded, resting her shoulder against the doorframe for support.

The guard stopped short, his jaw tightening as his expression hardened into stone.

"Doctor Solomon, I’m sorry," he muttered, keeping his rifle pointed at the ground.

Raviah’s eyes widened. "What?"

"We were ordered not to rescue you," he said softly, refusing to look her in the eye.

Raviah’s blood ran cold as a chill settled deep in her chest. "Who gave that order?"

The guard shifted his weight uncomfortably and looked away. "You know who."

Zachary. Her hands began trembling against her wounded ribs as the truth settled in. Even while fleeing for his own life, he had made sure she would not escape the falling building.

"She caused all of this," a weak, trembling voice drifted from behind the guard.

Raviah turned to see Carmela standing at the end of the corridor, wrapped in a clean, pristine winter coat. Her tiny forearm scratch had already been neatly bandaged. Several surviving militia members stood behind the actress, their faces dark with suspicion.

Carmela lowered her eyes pitifully, dabbing at fake tears. "She refused to give me medicine. She kept everything for herself in this room while everyone else suffered."

Raviah stared at the woman in absolute disbelief, her breathing ragged. "You’re lying!"

Carmela’s eyes immediately reddened as she squeezed out a pathetic tear. "I only asked for one dose for my injury..."

Murmurs of anger quickly spread through the survivors behind her.

"She was the only one with access to the medical cabinet," a man muttered, gripping his knife handle.

"Maybe she really was hoarding it all for herself," another voice chimed in. "People died in the ward because of her."

Raviah’s stomach twisted into a sickening knot as the realization hit her. Zachary hadn’t merely abandoned her to the creatures. He had orchestrated this entire narrative to ensure everyone left behind would turn on her.

Images flashed through her mind, every time Zachary had asked her about medical supplies, every time he had begged her to examine an injured officer, and every detail she had shared about disease symptoms and treatments.

She had naively believed he was trying to protect the camp.

Now the horrifying truth fell into place.

He had systematically harvested her expertise to make himself indispensable to the survivors. Her reputation had granted him authority, her medical knowledge had made him valuable, and her absolute trust had handed him total control over their resources.

Once she had served her purpose and the compound fell, he simply discarded her like trash.

A survivor stepped forward, raising a heavy metal pipe high above his head.

"Enough of her excuses!" he yelled.

Raviah staggered backward against the concrete wall, her body battered and drained. She had no strength left to fight, no weapons to defend herself, and no one left to call for help.

The pipe swung downward toward her head.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion ripped through the outer wall, throwing the attacker off balance as the ceiling vibrated violently. Everyone in the corridor froze as dust poured over them.

From outside, the thunderous roar of heavy armored engines resonated through the ruined street, followed instantly by the rhythmic chatter of military gunfire. The rounds were precise and relentless, tearing through the mutated beasts in the yard.

The creatures began screeching in agony as a military convoy smashed straight through the outer barricades. Tactical soldiers poured out of the vehicles, establishing a perimeter with deadly efficiency.

At the center of the breach walked a man covered in dark blood, moving with lethal grace through the wreckage. He was tall and cold, his dark military uniform torn and stained crimson, yet his posture remained impeccably straight.

Rhyder Drakeheir.

The general raised a heavy sidearm, firing three consecutive rounds without hesitation. A massive mutated beast collapsed at his feet with a heavy thud, followed immediately by another.

His squad advanced into the hospital lobby, clearing corridors with ruthless precision. Raviah could barely breathe as she watched the stranger march toward the inner hallway. She had never met him face-to-face, yet an undeniable sense of recognition surged through her core.

Rhyder turned his head, his sharp, icy eyes locking onto hers through the rising smoke. His stern expression instantly shattered into raw urgency.

"Run!" he shouted, throwing his body forward.

Raviah stared at him in confusion, unable to move.

Before she could process his command, a deafening roar erupted from the floor above, and a colossal mutated beast crashed through the support pillars. Tons of reinforced concrete and twisted rebar exploded outward, collapsing the structural ceiling down upon the corridor.

Rhyder lunged toward her, reaching out a gloved hand as the support beams buckled. Raviah reached back for him, but the collapsing floor gave way entirely, swallowing them both into the darkness below.
