Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 1: The World Has Fallen
The world had ended three hundred and eighty-seven days ago. Raviah Solomon could still vividly remember the day civilization collapsed, a quiet morning shattered by piercing sirens and frantic emergency broadcasts that commanded everyone to remain indoors.
Then came the first reports of strange abilities, quickly followed by mutated beasts that tore through entire cities as if human existence had meant nothing at all.
Now, almost nothing remained standing in the barren wasteland. The city’s central hospital, once a beacon of advanced medical care, had been retrofitted into a crude fortress for nearly two hundred survivors.
Sheets of scrap metal covered its windows, rusted vehicles barricaded the primary entrances, and every patient room had been turned into a cramped shelter. Yet even this fortress was rapidly crumbling from the inside.
"Doctor Solomon!" a nurse called out, her voice trembling as she beckoned from across the dimly lit room.
Raviah looked up from her work and hurried to the makeshift bed. A young woman lay writhing against the thin mattress, her cheeks flushed with fever and her lips cracked and dry.
"She’s burning up again," the nurse whispered, wiping sweat from the girl’s forehead.
Raviah pressed the back of her palm against the patient’s scalding skin and felt the frantic, irregular pulse in her neck. She turned toward the wooden medical cabinet, her chest tightening as her fingers pulled the drawers open. The shelves were stripped bare.
The antibiotics, painkillers, and antiviral medications were completely gone. Simple antiseptics and clean bandages, once taken for granted, had become as precious as gold.
Raviah pulled open the lowest drawer and found only two tiny liquid vials resting in the corner. She stared at them for several seconds, feeling the weight of every life relying on those last drops.
"Administer half the usual dose," Raviah instructed, drawing the clear fluid into a syringe. "We have to stretch what little we have left."
The nurse gasped softly. "But Doctor, half a dose won’t be enough to clear her infection--"
"Do it," Raviah commanded, her voice steady even as her fingers trembled against the glass vial.
Before the ruins, she had been a renowned physician whose name commanded absolute respect. Patients waited months just to secure a consultation, and top medical institutes fought ruthlessly to recruit her.
None of those titles held any power in this new world. A prestigious degree could not synthesize penicillin from empty air, and a lifetime of medical knowledge could not stop the monsters roaming outside.
A sudden, violent shockwave shook the entire building.
BOOM!
Dust rained down from the concrete ceiling, coating the makeshift beds in grey powder as survivors screamed in terror. Raviah snapped her head toward the reinforced windows, watching the heavy metal plates groan under immense pressure.
A second impact rattled the walls, followed by the sickening crunch of twisted iron. Something massive was hammering against the hospital’s outer barricades.
"We’re running out of time," a man whimpered from the corner, clutching his children tightly to his chest.
Raviah clenched her fists until her knuckles turned white, staring at the buckling metal. She knew exactly what was pounding on those walls. The mutated beasts that had supplanted ordinary wildlife after the sky fell.
The pack had surrounded the medical complex three days ago, grinding down the defenses bit by bit. The survivors had fought desperately to hold the perimeter, but the makeshift barriers were finally giving way.
Raviah glanced at the wall clock, its ticking second hand mocking the silence between impacts. Her eyes lingered on the numbers, a heavy knot forming in her stomach.
Zachary should have arrived by now. He had promised her he would come.
Before the local communication relays completely dead-ended, Zachary Taylor had managed to reach her through a crackling radio signal. He had claimed that he secured a heavily fortified shelter, promising to bring an armed escort to pull her out.
"Wait for me, Raviah," his voice had echoed through the static. "I’m coming back for you."
She had believed him, anchoring her hope to those words through every terrifying night. Even as civilization shattered around them, she had trusted the man she loved.
A guttural roar ripped through the courtyard outside, rattling the glass panes in their frames. The room fell deathly silent as every survivor froze in place.
Then came the screech of heavy iron bending and snapping under monstrous force.
"They’re breaking through the gate!" a guard yelled from the end of the hall.
Raviah slung her leather medical bag over her shoulder and turned to the crowd.
"Everyone move to the emergency corridor now!" she ordered, waving her arm toward the rear stairwell.
Chaos exploded through the hall as mothers snatched up their children and men hoisted remaining food crates over their shoulders. People shoved past one another, driven by sheer, unadulterated panic.
CRASH!
The reinforced steel doors of the front entrance burst inward, showering the lobby with concrete debris and shattered iron. A freezing blast of wind swept through the dust-filled corridor, carrying the acrid stench of smoke and rot.
Through the haze stepped a squad of heavily armed men carrying high-grade tactical rifles.
Raviah’s heart leaped into her throat as she recognized the figure at the front. "Zachary?"
She pushed her way through the fleeing crowd, breathless relief washing over her for a fleeting second. He stood near the shattered threshold, clad in pristine tactical armor without a single speck of dirt or drop of blood on him.
Clinging tightly to his arm was Carmela Bane, the former actress, her face pale as she huddled against his chest.
Raviah took a step forward, but the relief died instantly in her throat. Zachary’s eyes did not sweep the room searching for her safety. Instead, his gaze locked directly onto the medical bag slung across her chest.
"Carmela is injured," Zachary said, his tone devoid of warmth as he stepped over the debris. "Give me the medicine."
Raviah stopped in her tracks, staring at him in disbelief. "What?"
"She needs the antibiotics," he demanded, nodding toward the actress.
Raviah glanced down at Carmela, whose delicate hand covered a tiny, superficial scratch along her forearm. She looked back up into Zachary’s cold, unfamiliar eyes, realization dawning like a splash of ice water.
"No," Raviah said firmly, taking a step back. "I have critically ill patients who will die without those doses."
Zachary’s jaw tightened as his expression darkened. "We don’t have time to argue about this, Raviah."
"Neither do the people bleeding out in this hallway!" she snapped back.
Zachary took a deliberate step toward her, his hand resting on the holster at his hip. "Don’t make this difficult for yourself."
Raviah tightened her grip on the strap of her bag, her chest heaving as tears of betrayal stung her eyes. "You promised you’d come back for me."
For the first time since he had breached the building, Zachary let out a soft, mocking laugh. It was a chilling sound that held none of the warmth she had cherished for years.
"I did come back," he murmured, his dark eyes glinting behind the dust.
He cast a cold glance toward the crumbling barricades as the shrieks of approaching beasts grew deafening. "Just not for you."
Before Raviah could process his words, the outer concrete wall violently collapsed inward under the weight of massive, scaled limbs. A deafening roar shattered the remaining glass, hurling debris across the lobby.
Zachary instantly grabbed Carmela by the waist, shoving her through the heavy fire exit doors behind them.
"Zachary!" Raviah screamed, sprinting forward as fast as her legs could carry her.
She reached out a hand, her fingers brushing the cold metal of the doorframe just as Zachary pulled the heavy barrier shut between them.
Click.
The heavy iron lock slammed into place. Through the tiny, reinforced glass pane of the door, Raviah caught one final glimpse of Zachary running down the clear escape tunnel without ever looking back.
Behind her, the shadows of the mutated beasts flooded into the room.
