Doctor Reborn as a Peasant Girl? Time to Get Rich
Chapter 233: Want to Go to the Capital City?
Chapter 233 -225: Want to Go to the Capital City?
The bathroom and toilet were paved with bluestone slabs. Two large wooden barrels were placed on the roofs above them, connected by homemade bamboo pipes and valves. This allowed them to have ‘running water’ in the bathroom and toilet. The only catch was that filling the barrels was a strenuous process, a task that naturally fell to Hu Feng.
The Jin guard stared at the bamboo pipes and valves with curiosity. “What is this?” he asked, reaching out to twist one. A stream of clear water immediately poured out from the pipe, startling him.
Bai Zhi quickly turned it off, smiling. “That’s fresh water fed down from above. Don’t waste it. Hu Feng had to make seven or eight trips just to fill that big barrel.”
Meng Nan and the Jin guard ran up and down, inspecting it a dozen times before they finally understood the principle behind it. ‘What a clever method! How have we never thought of this before?’
Meng Nan asked, “Who taught you this?”
Bai Zhi shrugged. “No one. I just tinkered with it myself. It’s just a little gadget, nothing refined.”
Once the principle was understood, it really did seem simple. The question was, who had been the one to figure it out?
The Jin guard kept giving Bai Zhi a thumbs-up. “Brilliant, truly brilliant! Clever, so clever!”
Bai Zhi laughed. “Alright, the house isn’t finished yet, so there’s not much to see. When it’s done, I’ll invite you over for drinks, and I’ll give you a proper tour then.”
Meng Nan sighed. “I’d like that, but I’m afraid I won’t be here for it.”
Puzzled, Bai Zhi raised an eyebrow. “Why? Has something happened?”
The Jin guard chimed in, “Nothing bad has happened. It’s just that the Young Master is returning to the Capital City, and he’s afraid he won’t be here when your house is finished.”
Bai Zhi immediately broke into a smile, revealing her pearly white teeth. In the sunlight, her smile was more brilliant than the sun itself. Seeing that smile, Meng Nan’s own mood brightened.
“But that’s great news! Last time we talked, you said you wanted to go home. Isn’t this perfect?”
Returning to the Capital City was, of course, a good thing, but Meng Nan, right now—
He suddenly dropped his usual devil-may-care attitude and looked at Bai Zhi with immense seriousness. “Zhi, do you want to go to the Capital City?”
Bai Zhi froze. ‘The Capital City?’
‘The mention of the Capital City made her think of the prosperity of Beijing. In her modern life, she had lived in Beijing and was used to that kind of highly prosperous, bustling, and noisy environment.’
‘But after coming to this world, the tranquility of the small mountain village had made her feel reborn. There was nothing wrong with living here; her mood was relaxed every day, and the high-pressure urgency of her former life was gone. This is what it means to truly live, isn’t it?’
She shook her head. “I don’t want to.”
Meng Nan was taken aback. “You don’t? Why? Everyone envies and longs for the Capital City; they all want to live there. Even if they can’t settle down, they feel it’s worth it just to see its hustle and bustle. And you don’t want to go?”
Bai Zhi nodded. “I remember telling you, I don’t want a bustling life. I just want to live a peaceful and carefree life with my mother here in this small mountain village. The Capital City… is no longer suitable for me.”
‘The Capital City… is no longer suitable for me!’
‘What did she mean by that? She said it as if the city had once been suitable for her, or as if she had lived there before.’
Meng Nan grew a little anxious. “Think about it again. If you want to go, I can immediately arrange for you and your mother to move to the Capital City. I can guarantee you a life of comfort, without any worries.”
Meng Nan’s words reminded her of something a certain man had once said to her in her modern life. The words were strikingly similar.
