Chapter 232: Women’s Work
Chapter 232 -224: Women’s Work
Jin Xiao’an’s gaze also fell on Hu Feng and Bai Zhi. After watching them for a moment, he suddenly broke into a wide grin. “You know, I have to say, they look great together. They get along so well, they’re bound to end up a couple.”
Meng Nan’s handsome brows knitted together instantly. He whipped his head around to glare fiercely at Jin Xiao’an and snapped, “A good match? In what way? I don’t see it at all. Stop spouting nonsense.”
Jin Xiao’an was left completely baffled by the rebuke. ‘What’s gotten into him? Can’t I even make a joke? Why is he being so serious?’
Scowling, Meng Nan stalked toward the old locust tree where the other two were.
Hearing the hurried footsteps, Hu Feng turned his head. He saw a disgruntled Meng Nan glaring at him with a bizarre expression and couldn’t help but smirk. “The hungry ghost is here. You’d better go start cooking.”
“Hey, who are you calling a hungry ghost?” Meng Nan demanded.
Hu Feng shrugged. “Whoever answered, I guess.”
Meng Nan was furious. He pointed a finger at Hu Feng and fumed, “You call me a hungry ghost? I’d say you’re the one reborn as a hungry ghost! When have you ever *not* fought me for food?”
Hu Feng raised an eyebrow, his gaze flicking to Jin Xiao’an. “Are you sure it’s me you’re fighting with, and not him?”
Jin Xiao’an blushed and scratched his head with an awkward laugh. “Well, I did fight you for it. But what can I say? Miss Bai’s cooking is just too delicious! I can’t help myself.”
Meng Nan shot him a glare. “Shut up.”
Noticing the tense atmosphere, Bai Zhi quickly tried to change the subject. She asked Meng Nan, “Brother Meng, did you need something, coming to see me at this time?”
Meng Nan’s expression soured, and he gave Bai Zhi a reproachful look. “So I can’t come see you unless I need something?”
An embarrassed expression appeared on Bai Zhi’s pretty face. She laughed awkwardly and replied, “That’s not what I meant. Since you’re here, would you like to see my new house?”
Meng Nan pointed to the house under construction nearby. “You mean this?”
Bai Zhi nodded. “That’s the one. Don’t you want to take a look?”
Jin Xiao’an quickly raised his hand. “I want to see! I want to see! The outer walls are built so high, I’m curious what it looks like inside.”
Hu Feng seemed uninterested. He had no desire to endure Meng Nan’s constant glares for no reason. “You guys go ahead. I’ll go back and start cooking.”
“Cooking? You know how to cook?” Meng Nan looked at him in astonishment.
Hu Feng ignored him and simply turned and walked away.
Meng Nan tugged on Bai Zhi’s sleeve. “Does he really know how to cook?”
Bai Zhi nodded. “He does. It’s just cooking rice, which isn’t that hard. I showed him once, and now he does it very well.”
“But he’s a man. Why would he—why would he be willing to do a woman’s chores?” Meng Nan couldn’t understand. In his eyes, Hu Feng wasn’t like the other men from the mountains.
Bai Zhi raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong with doing a woman’s chores? Around here, women do the same work as men. So what’s so strange about a man occasionally doing work traditionally done by women? I believe that, aside from giving birth, there’s nothing a man can’t do.”
Meng Nan hadn’t expected Bai Zhi to get so serious; it had just been an offhand question. He let out a couple of awkward laughs. “Right, you’re right. Come on, let’s go see your new house.”
Bai Zhi said nothing more and led Meng Nan and Jin Xiao’an into the two-and-a-half-story modern house, which had already taken shape.
The house wasn’t large. On the first floor, a solid wood staircase ran up against the right-hand wall, but the rest of the space was completely open. She planned to partition it into two areas, one for a living room and one for a dining room. The backyard wasn’t big; aside from an area she’d reserved for drying clothes and planting vegetables, she’d used the remaining space to build a washroom and a toilet, side by side.
