Chapter 115: New Book Reader’s Guide 8

After lunch, Sister in law Gu led Feng Ge out of the house.

This was the first time Feng Ge had gone out since she’d woken up.

A few days ago, she was so weak that she would get dizzy after just a few steps, so she hadn’t dared to leave. She was feeling much better today and decided to go out and see the village where she would be living for a while.

"Sister Gu, I haven’t seen you in days! Are you doing well?" A short, stout woman with a round face, carrying a vegetable basket, walked toward them and greeted Sister Gu warmly.

Sister in law Gu quickly replied, "We’re doing just fine. Sister Li, out gathering wild vegetables again?"

Chapter 10

The woman stopped in front of Sister in law Gu. With a smile on her face, her eyes furtively sized up Feng Ge. She said cheerfully, "Someone was saying Feng was terribly ill. I was even thinking of paying a visit. I never thought I’d run into you here. This Feng doesn’t look like a sick person at all! Who knows what nonsense people are spouting behind her back."

Sister in law Gu’s smile was quite stiff. "Yes, who knows who it is that loves to gossip behind people’s backs. My Young Miss is doing very well."

The woman’s eyebrows rose slightly, and the corner of her mouth twitched almost imperceptibly. Then she asked, "Where are you two headed?"

Sister in law Gu pointed ahead and said, "Just for a casual walk. To digest our food after a full meal."

Sister Li’s mouth twitched again. This time the curl was more pronounced, and even Sister in law Gu saw it.

"Oh, then you two go on. My family isn’t as fortunate as yours, having food and supplies delivered. If I don’t go out to gather wild vegetables, we won’t have anything for dinner."

As Sister Li spoke, she turned to leave, but Feng Ge, who had been silent all this time, suddenly stopped her. "Li Saozi, please wait."

Sister Li froze, pointing at herself in disbelief. "You’re talking to me?" ’Although this Feng girl has always lived in the village, her life is as fragile as paper, yet her heart is loftier than the heavens. She’s never paid any of us village women any mind, let alone spoken to us voluntarily.’

Feng Ge nodded, her expression placid. "Of course I am."

Li Saozi turned back around and looked Feng Ge up and down. "How strange. Feng, you’re actually willing to speak to a coarse country woman like me?" ’This girl calls herself the young miss of the Feng family, thinking they’ll summon her back to the Capital City to live a life of luxury sooner or later. She’s never seen us village women as being worth her notice.’

Feng Ge was completely unbothered by her sarcasm. ’This woman has what they call ghost eyebrows—thick brows that press down on the eyes, a sign of a wicked heart. She also has the face of a malevolent woman: a large mouth that exposes her teeth, a short philtrum, and a short, low nose with a crooked bridge.’

’The face of someone destined for poverty and misery! Naturally, I won’t stoop to her level.’

"Aunt Li, has there been unrest in your household recently? Has a family member come down with a terrible illness?"

Sister Li’s expression changed drastically. Her eyes flew wide as she stared at Feng Ge in terror.

’How could she know? No one in the village knows about this. Not even our next-door neighbors know. How could she possibly know?’

Feng Ge continued, "I see that your forehead is dark yellow with a tinge of green, Aunt Li. I’m afraid it’s no simple illness! If you don’t resolve it soon, I fear a sudden calamity will befall you."

Sister Li was both shocked and suspicious. ’When did this Feng girl learn to read faces? She sounds so convincing, not like she’s trying to trick me. What should I do? Should I pretend nothing’s wrong, or should I ask her to come take a look?’

After all, she was just a villager with little worldliness and didn’t dare to make such a decision on her own. She gave Feng Ge and her servant a few perfunctory replies and hurried home, no longer in a rush to gather wild vegetables.

"Young Miss, what did you mean by all that just now?" Sister in law Gu was completely baffled. ’I raised the Young Miss myself. I taught her the zither, chess, calligraphy, and painting, but I never taught her anything about face reading or feng shui. I don’t even understand that stuff myself!’

Feng Ge was in high spirits. ’I can’t believe I ran into some business as soon as I stepped out the door. It looks like we’ll be able to eat white rice for dinner tonight.’

"It’s nothing. I just saw that her forehead was dark, which looked like an ominous sign, so I kindly gave her a little reminder." Feng Ge smiled and pulled Sister in law Gu along to continue their walk.
