Chapter 739: Chapter 727: I Want You to Marry Me (15)
Eleanor Bishop lay on the bed, Archie Lockwood’s parting words echoing in her mind.
’Eleanor Bishop, you should be glad your body can still fetch a high price from me. After tonight, the slate is clean—we owe each other nothing! If I see you again, it won’t be as simple as tonight!’
’The slate is clean... we owe each other nothing...?’
’Yeah, maybe I should be grateful. To Archie Lockwood, I still have this one last shred of value—the value of being humiliated.’
’And what a high price it was!’
’Across all of Tridell, perhaps even all of Jevon, no other "old woman" in her thirties could command such a price!’
’Twenty million for one night! That twenty million felt like a vicious slap to the face, leaving it stinging...’
She stared blankly at the ceiling, unsure of how long it was before she finally passed out.
She didn’t wake again until the following afternoon, roused by housekeeping coming to clean the room.
Sometime while she was asleep, her ankle had been treated and wrapped in gauze. Her body felt as if it had been washed, and she was dressed in a fresh set of clothes.
She sat on the bed, dazed for a long moment, before her mind finally cleared.
She carefully got out of bed and shuffled painfully to the bathroom. She tied up her hair and splashed some water on her face. When she saw the reflection in the mirror—a woman with deep, dark circles under her eyes, pale lips, and a haggard, sickly complexion—a scornful smile touched her lips.
His words echoed in her ears. ’This face of yours is a far cry from how you looked nine years ago.’
’A far cry? It’s like I’m a completely different person.’
’If I didn’t say my name was Eleanor Bishop, no one would recognize me. Who would believe I was *the* Eleanor Bishop? The woman once pursued by every wealthy heir in Tridell, the cherished princess doted on by her father, Mayor Bishop, the future daughter-in-law handpicked by the Lockwood Family!’
’Ha, and now? I’m only thirty-three, but I look like I could be forty, even fifty.’
’Even I, looking at my own reflection, have to wonder: how on earth did he bring himself to touch me last night?’
’A man like him, a man of his status... how could he possibly find me desirable?’
’He must have had no shortage of beautiful, charming women by his side all these years.’
’In the past, I’d been utterly confident in my ability to captivate Archie Lockwood, because my looks were my greatest asset. Now, I’ve lost even that.’
’And yet, he...’
A knock at the door pulled her from her spiraling thoughts.
Her brow furrowed, and a wave of nervousness washed over her. She quickly splashed more water on her face, patting her cheeks firmly.
Wincing at the pain in her ankle, she left the bathroom and went to open the door.
When she opened the door, she saw Louise Jordan standing there.
Back when Archie Lockwood was still Archie Summers, back when she was with him, his subordinates had all despised her. Louise Jordan, another woman, had been especially hostile.
So, seeing Louise Jordan didn’t bring a sense of relief. Instead, her anxiety spiked.
Louise Jordan gave her a cold look and said flatly, "Miss Bishop. It’s been a while."
"Louise Jordan. It’s been a while."
"Miss Bishop, after all these years, it seems you haven’t learned a thing." ’Still as good as ever at making the boss hate her...’
’Outsiders might not see it, but as the boss’s secretary and bodyguard, I know better than anyone just how good he had been to Miss Bishop.’
