Chapter 1752: Cursed Roots!
Chapter 1752: Cursed Roots!
Max and Nancy had barely descended into the outer region of Witch God Valley when the cursed mist around them began to move strangely, and although the valley looked silent from above, the moment their feet touched the dark wooden ground formed by the highest branches of the Witch God Tree, Max immediately sensed that something hidden beneath the surface had awakened.
The black grass swayed without wind, the mist crawling across the ground gathered into thin streams, and the twisted stone pillars scattered throughout the valley released faint green light as if they were silently watching the two intruders enter a forbidden place.
Nancy’s expression changed slightly. "Be careful."
Before her words fully faded, the ground beneath them exploded.
Boom!
Countless tree roots burst out from beneath the surface, thick, black, and covered in glowing green veins that pulsed like cursed blood. They did not rise slowly like ordinary roots. They shot out like spears, whips, and serpents at the same time, tearing through the dark wooden ground and rushing toward Max and Nancy from every direction.
Some roots came from beneath their feet, some twisted down from the branches above, some emerged from the mist, and some even extended from the nearby stone pillars as if the entire valley had become a living cage trying to devour them.
Max’s eyes turned cold.
Dragonheart appeared in his hand in an instant, and the Severing Sword Concept erupted from his blade like an invisible edge capable of cutting apart anything in its path.
He swung his sword once, and a sharp sword light swept outward, severing dozens of roots before they could reach him. The cut roots fell to the ground and twitched violently, leaking dark green liquid that hissed against the wooden surface like poison burning through flesh.
But more roots came.
Far more.
Max slashed again.
Then again.
Each sword strike released a terrifying severing force, and every time Dragonheart moved, hundreds of roots were cleanly cut apart. Some roots were sliced into several pieces before they could even fully emerge from the ground, while others were split lengthwise as the sword light passed through them.
The Severing Sword Concept was extremely effective against them, and under Max’s sword, even these cursed roots could not resist for long.
However, their number was simply too high.
The entire valley seemed to be producing them endlessly.
The roots did not care how many were cut down. They continued rushing forward without pause, layering over one another until the air around Max and Nancy became filled with black, twisting lines.
From a distance, it looked as if the Witch God Tree itself had opened countless veins and sent them all to swallow the intruders alive.
Max’s expression remained calm.
No matter how many roots came toward him, he cut them down with cold precision. His sword moved so quickly that it left behind only faint afterimages, and every slash carried the eerie sharpness of the Severing Sword Concept.
Roots came from above, and he cut them before they descended. Roots came from beneath, and he split them as they broke through the ground. Roots tried to wrap around his arms and legs, but they were severed before they could tighten.
Even when dozens attacked him from blind spots, Max turned slightly and swept Dragonheart around his body, forming a circular sword light that shredded everything approaching him.
Nancy, however, was having a much harder time.
She was strong, and her reaction was not slow. The moment the roots attacked, she drew her sword and released her light concept together with her Death Wind concept. Pale silver light flashed around her blade, while gray-green Death Wind wrapped around the edge, and every strike she made cut several roots apart while also corroding the vitality hidden inside them.
When the roots came too densely, she shifted her figure through the mist, dodging between attacks with elegant movements, then slashed out with crescent-shaped waves of light and death wind that tore apart the roots chasing her.
For a while, she managed to hold on.
Her sword cut down one group of roots.
Her Death Wind withered another.
Her light concept burned through several more.
But the roots were not attacking like ordinary enemies. They came endlessly, without fear, without hesitation, and without any sense of pain. Every time Nancy cut down ten, thirty more rushed from another direction.
Every time she dodged one wave, another rose beneath her feet.
Gradually, the space around her became smaller and smaller, and even her movements began to slow under the overwhelming pressure.
"Nancy!" Max called out coldly as he noticed her situation.
"I can handle it!" Nancy replied, but even as she spoke, several roots tore through the mist behind her and wrapped around her left arm.
She severed them instantly with Death Wind, but that moment of delay was enough.
More roots rushed in.
One wrapped around her waist.
Another caught her ankle.
Three more coiled around her sword arm.
Nancy’s eyes sharpened, and she released a burst of light from her body, burning several roots apart, but the surrounding roots immediately layered over her again. Their number was too great, and before she could fully break free, dozens of thick roots surged from all sides and swallowed her figure completely.
In the next instant, Nancy disappeared inside a massive cocoon of black roots.
Max’s eyes turned icy.
"Damn."
His body moved instantly.
The roots tried to block him, but Max rushed forward like a sharp black shadow, Dragonheart cutting apart everything in his path.
At the same time, black flames burst into his right hand blazing with devouring intent.
Max thrust his hand forward.
Boom!
Black flames exploded across the root cocoon.
The moment the cursed roots touched the black flames, they burned violently. Their green veins flared, their surfaces cracked, and the dark liquid inside them evaporated into foul smoke before the roots could even struggle. Unlike sword cuts, which only severed them, the black flames destroyed them completely, turning them into ash and erasing the cursed vitality that allowed them to keep moving.
In only a breath, the root cocoon was burned open.
Max reached inside, grabbed Nancy by the arm, and pulled her out.
Nancy’s face was slightly pale, and several marks had been left on her arms and waist where the roots had tried to bind her, but she was still conscious. The moment Max pulled her free, she coughed once and quickly steadied herself beside him.
"Are you injured?" Max asked without looking away from the roots still rushing toward them.
"Not seriously," Nancy said, though her breathing was a little unstable. "Those roots were trying to drain my energy."
Max’s gaze became colder.
"Then stay close."
The black flames around his body erupted again.
This time, Max did not use them as a simple attack. He spread them outward, forming a sphere of black flames around both himself and Nancy. The flame sphere burned silently at first, then began rotating slowly, its surface rippling like a dark sun wrapped around them.
The cursed roots continued attacking from every direction, but the moment they touched the sphere of black flames, they were burned into nothingness before they could even exert force.
Hiss! Hiss! Hiss!
One root after another vanished.
The roots came from above and turned to ash.
They came from below and were burned away.
They rushed through the mist in waves, but none could pass through the black flame sphere.
The entire area around Max and Nancy became filled with the smell of burning cursed wood, and the ground beneath them trembled as the Witch God Tree seemed to react angrily to the destruction of its roots.
More and more roots rose from the valley, but it no longer mattered. The black flames devoured all of them, leaving behind only drifting ash and shrinking trails of green smoke.
Nancy stood inside the sphere of black flames, looking at Max’s back with a complicated expression.
She had been trapped only for a moment, but she knew very well that if Max had acted even a little slower, those roots might have drained her power or dragged her deeper into the valley. This place was far more dangerous than she had expected, and they had only just entered the outer region.
Max looked at the endless roots burning outside the flame sphere and narrowed his eyes.
"So the valley itself is trying to stop us."
Nancy took a slow breath and nodded. "Witch God Valley is alive in a strange way. The deeper we go, the worse it will become."
Max’s expression remained cold.
"We have to be serious here."
The black flame sphere expanded slightly, and every root near them was erased at once.
With Nancy close beside him, Max stepped forward into the mist, surrounded by the rotating sphere of black flames, while the cursed roots of the Witch God Tree continued rushing toward them only to be burned into nothingness the moment they touched his protection.
After another five minutes, these cursed tree roots stopped attacking them. Inside the black flaming sphere, Max didn’t underestimate the cursed roots and kept the sphere up and continued walking forward.
They walked for an hour before the region of cursed roots slowly disappeared into nothingness. Only then Max let go of the sphere of black flames.
