Chapter 1750: Witch God Tree!
Chapter 1750: Witch God Tree!
The tree stood in the middle of the desolate land like an ancient pillar supporting the sky. Its trunk was so wide that even several cities placed side by side might not have been enough to cover its base, and its bark was dark brown mixed with faint traces of gray-black lines that looked almost like old scars carved by lightning.
Countless roots spread from its base and tore through the earth in every direction, some thicker than mountain ridges, some sinking deep into the sand, and some twisting upward like enormous sleeping dragons.
Strange mist coiled around the roots, and every now and then, faint green-black lights flickered within the cracks of the bark.
Max raised his head.
The top of the tree could not be seen.
Its trunk rose higher and higher, piercing through layers of mist, passing through the clouds, and vanishing into a dark sky above. The branches that could be seen were already larger than ordinary mountains, and each one stretched outward for an unknown distance, forming pathways, cliffs, and forest-like platforms high above the ground.
Some parts of the tree were covered in pale leaves that released a ghostly glow, while other parts were completely withered, as if life and death had been forced to exist together within the same ancient body.
For once, Max’s expression showed genuine surprise.
"What kind of tree is this?" he muttered.
He had seen many strange things since entering the Divine Realm. He had seen divine abilities, hidden dimensions, demonic armies, Pseudo Cosmic Paths, and mysterious inheritances, but the tree in front of him still managed to shock him.
It did not feel like a normal living thing. It felt like a world by itself, an ancient existence rooted into the Eternal Hourglass and stretching into places ordinary people were not meant to reach.
Nancy stopped beside him and looked up at the towering tree with a solemn expression.
"This is the Witch God Tree," she said. "Some call it the Dead Heaven Tree. Others call it the Cursed Root of the Eternal Hourglass. No one knows its true origin, but the legends say it grew from the body of the ancient witch god who died in this region."
Max glanced at her. "And Witch God Valley is here?"
Nancy nodded, then raised her hand and pointed upward.
"Witch God Valley should be at the very top of this tree."
Max looked up again.
The top was hidden beyond the clouds, and even with his eyesight, he could not clearly see what lay above. The clouds around the upper part of the tree were not ordinary either.
They were dark, heavy, and faintly purple, with strands of green lightning flickering inside them like cursed veins. From time to time, strange cries drifted down from above, though it was impossible to tell whether they came from beasts, spirits, or the wind itself.
Nancy continued, "The valley is not on the ground. It is formed between the highest branches of the Witch God Tree, where the cursed mist gathers and creates a hidden region. That place is extremely dangerous, and once someone enters it, the tree itself makes it difficult to leave. Caroline and the others must have fled upward because the lower routes were blocked by the second faction’s hunters."
Max’s eyes narrowed. "So Seraphine and Fin are also up there?"
"If they are still chasing her, then yes," Nancy replied. "They should already be somewhere above us, either climbing through the branch roads or searching the outer mist of Witch God Valley."
Max looked at the trunk for a moment, then smiled coldly.
"Then we go up."
Nancy’s expression became more serious. "Be careful. Flying directly upward is the fastest way, but it may also attract the attention of the creatures living on the tree. The Witch God Tree is not empty. There are cursed beasts, soul insects, illusion flowers, and strange remnants of ancient witch power hidden all over it. Some of them are dangerous even to powerful geniuses."
Max’s gaze remained fixed on the unseen top of the tree.
"We do not have time to climb slowly."
Nancy had expected that answer.
She nodded. "Then fly to the very top of the tree. I will guide you as much as I can, but once we enter the upper mist, even my senses may be affected."
Max’s body began to release a faint golden light as he prepared to accelerate again.
"Stay close to me," he said.
Nancy looked at him and nodded.
In the next instant, Max shot upward like a streak of golden lightning, flying along the massive trunk of the Witch God Tree toward the clouds above. Nancy followed closely beside him, and the two of them rose rapidly past the enormous bark ridges, glowing leaves, hanging roots, and mountain-sized branches.
With Max taking the lead, the two of them shot upward along the gigantic trunk of the Witch God Tree, moving so quickly that the enormous ridges of bark around them blurred into dark streaks, while the dead lands of the Eternal Hourglass below grew smaller and smaller until even the massive roots spreading across the earth looked like twisted black veins.
The higher they flew, the thicker the cursed mist became, and the strange aura hidden within the tree also grew heavier, as if the entire ancient tree was slowly waking up because of their reckless ascent.
Nancy followed closely behind Max, her expression solemn as she watched the surrounding branches, hollows, leaves, and hanging roots with constant caution, but Max did not slow down even once.
It did not take long before the things living on the Witch God Tree noticed them.
A swarm of black-winged insects burst out from a crack in the bark, each one as large as a human head, with transparent wings covered in cursed patterns and sharp mouths that released shrill cries capable of piercing the mind.
At almost the same time, several vine-like creatures hanging from the higher branches suddenly came alive, twisting like serpents as they lashed toward Max and Nancy with thorn-covered bodies dripping green-black liquid.
Farther above, a huge demonic bird with three skull-like heads tore through the mist and dived toward them, its wings releasing waves of rotten wind that caused the surrounding clouds to churn violently.
Nancy’s eyes sharpened, and her hand moved toward her sword.
"Max, there are too many of them!"
