“On the other hand…”

Lu Chuan looked at Sun Biao: “Old Sun, you should take a female officer to Wang Meili’s house and have a chat with her daughter.”

Wang Meili’s daughter has been living with him for the past year, so the possibility that she didn’t know about Zhang Hui’s disappearance is actually quite small, even though Wang Meili provided a perfect explanation, saying the two of them had divorced and that Zhang Chao had left.

Wang Meili’s daughter also didn’t know that Wang Meili was fabricating these stories about Zhang Chao living with them.

But this is the official statement.

Lu Chuan and the others actually all knew that Wang Meili’s daughter couldn’t possibly not know anything.

“You must pay attention to how you talk, don’t ask questions, don’t interrogate, just chat, and find out indirectly if Wang Meili’s daughter knows anything through this casual conversation.”

Sun Biao nodded: “Don’t worry, I understand.”

“Additionally, if necessary, go to the girl’s school to inquire about her behavior over the past year and see if there was anything unusual.”

“Understood.”

Once the tasks were assigned, several team leaders immediately returned to their teams to continue meetings and allocate tasks, and by the afternoon, everyone had spread out. They started investigating from the three different aspects that Lu Chuan had presented.

Interrogation room.

Wang Meili was being interrogated again.

“I really don’t remember; I was in an emergency state from the domestic violence at the time. I really don’t remember where I stabbed him. Maybe it was the lower back, but maybe it was the front like you said, I’m not sure.”

Facing interrogation, Wang Meili looked a bit flustered but handled it quite properly.

Chen Jiang looked at her, took a deep breath: “Wang Meili, this case isn’t something you can just stay in; we must find out the truth about Zhang Chao’s murder.”

“Right now, your claimed motive for murder doesn’t quite align with our investigation and doesn’t match Zhang Chao’s usual behavior patterns either.”

“You’ve been telling us he often domestically abused you after drinking, but from our investigation, Zhang Chao had some alcohol allergies. He usually didn’t drink, and even socially, he only had a small amount of beer at most. So why would he get drunk and abuse you?”

Chen Jiang started laying his cards on the table.

During the interrogation, everything Wang Meili said about the motive and the murder process was identical to before. Chen Jiang was very clear that it was a rehearsed statement that she had prepared.

Therefore, he intended to use facts to break Wang Meili, directly pointing out the flaws in her statements, to see how she would handle it.

Sure enough, when Chen Jiang brought up Zhang Chao’s alcohol allergy, Wang Meili’s expression showed obvious panic.

Chen Jiang continued: “You two may be in your second marriage, but after living together for so many years, it’s impossible for you not to know he doesn’t drink, or that he has an alcohol allergy.”

“So, Wang Meili… why are you lying?”

“Who really killed Zhang Chao?”

Wang Meili was now sweating profusely.

“I…”

But soon after, she calmed down.

“Officer Chen, I don’t know where you heard that Zhang Chao doesn’t drink, no matter who said it, I’m telling you they’re wrong. Zhang Chao not only drank but he drank quite a lot each time.”

“I don’t know if you got this information from his colleagues, as Zhang Chao doesn’t like to socialize much.”

After the initial nervousness, Wang Meili appeared unusually calm now.

“He doesn’t drink at work or dine with colleagues, partly to save money, and partly because he pretends to be allergic to alcohol, just to avoid social dining and drinking. But at home, it’s different. I’ve lived with him for so many years; I’m very clear that his temper becomes quite irritable after drinking, though he doesn’t always hit me every time.”

Chen Jiang sighed.

They can only infer some things from the investigation results, but Zhang Chao is already dead. No one can confirm that he truly had an alcohol allergy, and there is no appropriate medical documentation, like Zhang Zhao going for a check-up to confirm that he had such symptoms. But now there is no way to verify it, as the person is dead.

Moreover, as Wang Meili said, she is the person who lived with Zhang Chao the longest, while others were just colleagues, and couldn’t know everything about Zhang Chao. So whatever Wang Meili says, it must be believed, as there’s no way to verify it.

“Wang Meili, let’s not talk about Zhang Chao’s possible alcohol allergy. Let’s talk about the frequent domestic violence you mentioned, but according to your neighbors, there weren’t any significant conflicts between you two, and they never heard any sounds of domestic violence.”

Wang Meili laughed lightly: “Household scandals must not be spoken outside.”

“We are both in our second marriages. I don’t have a job, and my daughter’s schooling, food, and clothing have depended on Zhang Chao. What can I do? If he hits me, I just endure it without making any noise. Otherwise how would it look to the neighbors?”

Over the next two days, Chen Jiang interrogated Wang Meili two more times.

But unfortunately,

maybe because of the frequent interrogations, Wang Meili’s statements became more assured and confident. No matter what Chen Jiang said, she maintained a nonchalant attitude as if unaffected by boiling water, always ready with an excuse to rebut Chen Jiang.

On the side of Wang Zhaokai, the investigation into Wang Meili’s interpersonal relationships also reached a conclusion.

In the meeting room, the team leaders gathered again to consolidate the information.

“Captain Lu, according to Tencent’s assessment, Wang Meili is lying, but she won’t admit it. She keeps using confusing arguments or says she forgot or remembers wrongly. Overall, she’s extremely certain about committing the murder.”

Chen Jiang was at his wit’s end.

“Zhaokai, how’s your investigation into her social relationships going?”

Wang Zhaokai shook his head: “Wang Meili’s social relationships are very simple. The people she frequently talks to are former classmates. As for interactions with unknown men, nothing has been found. There’s no such information in her phone or chat logs. Her bank transactions were also checked, and there were no unusual income or transfers. She forged Zhang Chao’s living with them in the past year, resulting in only transactions between the two of them.”

“From the current perspective, the possibility of Wang Meili having an affair is almost non-existent.”

Could it be… Wang Meili was telling the truth?

Was everyone overthinking it?

However, what Sun Biao said next made everyone seem to grasp the truth of the matter.
