Chapter 109: Might Wanna Slow Down There.
He had been able to detect the scent from such a great distance because there wasn’t simply one plant growing somewhere inside the forest.
There was an entire patch of them.
He crouched down and examined one of the plants.
The silver grass looked almost exactly like the sample he had seen at the merchant’s store.
Osborne reached out.
He gently touched one of the leaves.
The plant was cool against his fingers.
He looked across the clearing again.
There were far more plants here than he needed for the quest.
If the market price really was five silver coins per piece, then this single discovery could potentially earn him a considerable amount of money.
Osborne’s eyes narrowed slightly.
He had originally accepted the quest because it seemed easy.
He hadn’t expected it to become this profitable.
He stood up.
His gaze continued moving across the clearing. ℴℴ𝘮
There was another question he needed to answer.
Why had so many demonic beasts gathered around this place?
The answer was probably connected to the Moonlight Grass.
If the herb attracted them because it provided some kind of benefit, then there had to be something special about it.
Osborne’s curiosity increased.
He walked deeper into the clearing.
The scent was overwhelming now.
His enhanced sense of smell could detect the herb from every direction.
He looked down at the silver grass beneath his feet.
’What exactly is so special about you?’
He had no way of knowing yet. Osborne wanted nothing more than to increase his strength as a whole, and that meant not only him but his new minions as well.
In order to do that, he needed to figure out how this plant pushed the evolution of beasts into demonic beasts.
Or perhaps the Moonlight Grass wasn’t to blame?
But if that were true, why was the wolf pack so protective of this area? Only someone who had something precious to look after would do such a thing.
The silver markings on the wolves had already shown him that something unusual was happening here.
Osborne slowly looked around.
There had to be a reason.
While Osborne was admiring the view, a pair of golden eyes was watching him from within the patch of Moonlight Grass.
---
Osborne squatted down in front of some Moonlight Grass, looking at it with interest.
The silver blades of grass swayed gently as a cool breeze passed through the clearing, while the thick canopy above allowed only a small amount of sunlight to reach the ground, creating a quiet atmosphere that made the entire area feel different from the rest of the forest.
Osborne reached out and carefully touched one of the blades of Moonlight Grass.
He had seen the herb in the merchant’s shop before coming here, but seeing it growing naturally in such large numbers was an entirely different experience, especially when he considered how much money he could potentially earn from selling some of them.
Of course, he had no intention of selling everything.
If he took everything, who knew if more would even grow in their place? Taking some was good, rather than all.
Plus the quest only required him to gather Moonlight Grass, and since there was so much of it growing here, he could easily collect enough to complete the mission while keeping the rest for future use.
He still didn’t know what made the herb so attractive to demonic beasts, but the appearance of the silver-striped timber wolves had already given him a good reason to investigate further.
’If this herb can cause ordinary beasts to change into demonic beasts, then it might be worth more than I initially thought.’
Osborne studied the plant carefully.
He wasn’t certain whether the Moonlight Grass was responsible for the wolves’ unusual appearance, since he hadn’t seen the creatures before they became demonic beasts, but the fact that they had gathered around this area was too suspicious to ignore.
There had to be a reason.
He just needed to find out what it was.
At the same time, those golden eyes began creeping closer ever so quietly, gradually closing the distance between them without making a sound.
The creature moved through the Moonlight Grass with incredible care.
Its body remained low to the ground, and its paws barely disturbed the silver blades beneath them as it slowly approached the armored man.
The thick canopy above helped conceal its movements, while its unusual coat blended almost perfectly with the surrounding vegetation.
Even the blue markings across its body seemed to disappear whenever it passed through the darker patches of grass.
The creature’s golden eyes remained fixed on Osborne.
It had been watching him ever since he entered the clearing, and although the man appeared to be completely focused on the plants, the creature wasn’t foolish enough to assume that its prey would remain unaware forever.
It continued moving.
One step.
Then another.
The distance between them gradually decreased.
Osborne remained squatting in front of the Moonlight Grass, occasionally turning a blade between his fingers as though he had completely forgotten about his surroundings.
The creature’s breathing remained steady.
Its muscles tightened beneath its white coat as it prepared to attack.
Once the golden eyes deemed the distance close enough, the creature suddenly sprang forward.
"RARRRR!"
With an explosive force, a demonic beast lunged at Osborne from behind, letting out a savage roar.
The sudden movement sent several blades of Moonlight Grass flying into the air as the creature’s powerful hind legs pushed against the ground, launching its body directly toward the armored man.
Its claws extended.
Its jaws opened wide.
The attack was aimed at Osborne’s back, and judging by the speed at which it was moving, an ordinary person would have had little chance of avoiding it.
Now fully visible, the demonic beast resembled a majestic leopard with golden eyes, a lustrous white coat, blue markings, and a body twice as large as that of a normal leopard, while its long limbs and flexible body gave it an appearance that suggested incredible speed and agility.
