Chapter 94: Don’t Blame Me If Your Entire Clan Is Wiped Out
Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Don’t Blame Me If Your Entire Clan Is Wiped Out
Bai Wanwan searched all over the stone house before looking up to hurriedly ask Xin Feng, who was nearby, "Why is one of the cubs missing?"
For the past few days, Zhu Xiu and Xin Feng had been taking turns processing their game.
Most of the time, Zhu Xiu was the one out hunting while Xin Feng handled things at home.
If they were going to live in the Black Dog Tribe long-term, their food reserves were far from enough.
Xin Feng, who was in the middle of his work, immediately stood up when he heard her and joined the search.
Bai Wanwan practically turned the house upside down, but she still couldn’t find the missing cub.
"Xin Feng, the cub is gone!"
Xin Feng’s brow furrowed, but he still tried to reassure her. "Don’t worry, I’ll go look. The cub couldn’t have run out of the tribe. As long as it’s still inside, it won’t be in too much danger."
With that, he placed the other four cubs into a basket and slung it over his back. "Wait for me at home. I’ll be back soon."
Xin Feng left quickly. Anxious, Bai Wanwan searched inside and outside the house one more time, but still found nothing.
She waited by the entrance for a while, but her heart was racing, and she couldn’t calm down at all.
After a moment’s thought, she decided she couldn’t just wait and headed off to search in another part of the tribe.
She called out for the cub as she walked, hoping it would hear her voice and scamper out from somewhere.
But after searching for a good while, she had wandered far from her home and still hadn’t seen any sign of the cub.
’Could the cub have really run this far?’
Many Beastmen along the path were sizing her up, pointing and murmuring amongst themselves. Bai Wanwan walked straight up to them and asked, "Have you seen a wolf cub? It’s silver, with black markings on its head."
"N-no... we haven’t seen it."
She had no choice but to continue her search. As she passed an alleyway, she thought she heard the yelping of a cub.
She stopped in her tracks to listen carefully, but what she heard more clearly was the noisy clamor of females.
She immediately changed direction and headed into the alley.
The houses in the Black Dog Tribe were arranged quite neatly, with even the small alleys laid out in a grid-like pattern.
The farther she went in, the clearer the females’ noisy chatter became, drowning out the sound of the cub.
Worried, her pace quickened.
After walking a few dozen meters and turning right, she saw a group of females huddled in a circle.
The cub’s cries were coming from the center of the group.
Bai Wanwan charged forward and shoved aside the females in her way.
"What do you think you’re doing?"
Ignoring their curses, Bai Wanwan shoved one female after another aside until she finally saw her cub.
It was being held in a female’s arms, snarling at the others surrounding them.
At the sight of Bai Wanwan, the cub started to jump with excitement. Its fierce snarls turned into pitiful whimpers.
Bai Wanwan strode over, helped the injured female who had collapsed on the ground to her feet, and took the cub from her arms.
Once it smelled its Mother’s scent, the cub seemed to know it had caused trouble. It buried its head in her embrace, refusing to look up.
Bai Wanwan laughed in exasperation at its timid behavior, poking its little head with her finger before turning to the female in front of her.
"What happened?"
The female looked at her, then glanced nervously at the group of bullies behind her.
"Don’t worry about it. Just take your cub and go."
Bai Wanwan noticed the fear in her eyes and turned to look back at the dozen or so other females.
Every one of them was coarse and brawny, and several had cruel, fleshy faces that gave them a mean appearance.
"Who are you?" a female in an earth-yellow hide demanded, her eyes squeezed into tiny slits by her fleshy cheeks as she struggled to glare at Bai Wanwan.
Bai Wanwan ignored her completely, continuing to ask the injured female, "Were they trying to hurt my cub? Did you protect it?"
Shi Hua shook her head. "I found the cub on the path and then ran into them. They were only targeting me."
Bai Wanwan looked at her. ’She could have easily gone along with what I said and made me owe her a favor,’ she thought. ’This female is remarkably honest.’
"Thank you, anyway. If it weren’t for you, who knows where this little one would have run off to."
"Shi Hua, you get over here right now!"
The slit-eyed female pointed a finger at Shi Hua, her fierce glare fixed on Bai Wanwan.
The threatening warning was perfectly clear.
Shi Hua pursed her lips and whispered to Bai Wanwan, "You should go, quickly. Or else they’ll start bullying you, too."
If this young female, Shi Hua, hadn’t helped her cub, Bai Wanwan might not have bothered to get involved in this mess.
"Were those candied fruit skewers I gave you yesterday any good?"
Shi Hua froze, staring at her blankly.
Bai Wanwan smiled at her. "If you liked them, I’ll make you a few more in a couple of days."
Shi Hua’s Father Beast and Mother had been gone for a long time. Because of her low fertility and plain looks, she had been bullied by other females for as long as she could remember.
She’d heard that once she came of age, she would be sent to the Female Cave, where she would continue to be bullied by the males.
She was already used to being bullied, figuring if she just endured it, it would eventually pass.
Then, she heard the voice of the female shielding her. "I still have things to talk about with Shi Hua. You all should leave."
The dozen or so females stared at Bai Wanwan, their faces etched with disbelief.
"She’s telling us to leave?"
"Outsider, do you even know who she is? If you mess with her, you can forget about staying in the Black Dog Tribe."
Stroking the cub’s head, Bai Wanwan blinked innocently. "And who might she be?"
"Her family is the largest clan in our tribe. If you offend her, you’ll be offending half the Beastmen in the Black Dog Tribe."
’That’s some serious backing,’ Bai Wanwan thought.
Bai Wanwan nodded. The slit-eyed female, assuming she had backed down, snorted. "Then get lost. If you associate with Shi Hua, I’ll deal with you too."
"In that case, may I ask what rank the most powerful males in your tribe are?"
The slit-eyed female raised her chin proudly. "Our family has eight of the top experts in the entire Black Dog Tribe—all Green Rank!"
Bai Wanwan smiled faintly. "So the strongest Talent here is Green Rank?"
"That’s right! You outsider, are you done yet or not? Scram!" The slit-eyed female was losing her patience.
Fearing she would get Bai Wanwan into trouble, Shi Hua tugged on her animal-hide wrap. "Please, just take the cub and go. They’ll calm down after hitting me a couple of times. I’ll be fine."
Bai Wanwan patted her hand, silently telling her to be patient.
Then, she slowly turned to the dozen or so females before her. "And do you know who I am?"
The slit-eyed female roared, "Who cares who you are!"
"Oh, but you really should care! After all, both of my Beast Husbands happen to have Yellow Rank Talents..."
’There’s nothing wrong with borrowing my dear Beast Husbands’ prestige to show off a little, right?’
The slit-eyed female didn’t believe a word of it. "Yellow Rank? Who are you trying to fool? The highest Talent in our Black Dog Tribe is Green Rank."
"You said it yourself. The highest in the Black Dog Tribe is Green Rank. We’re not from the Black Dog Tribe."
Having said her piece, Bai Wanwan glanced sideways at Shi Hua. "Come with me."
Cradling the cub, she swaggered toward them.
The slit-eyed female still refused to believe it and yelled to the other females, "I don’t buy that her Beast Husbands have Yellow Rank Talent for a second! Stop her!"
Just as the females were about to grab her, Bai Wanwan pointed a finger at them.
"You might want to think carefully before you make a move! My Beast Husbands have terrible tempers. If any of you touch me, don’t come crying to me when your entire clan is annihilated!"
