Death… And Me

Chapter 4597: Prototype

  • Next Chapter

This wasn’t the first time Rean had created equipment based on the abilities of the System. We must not forget that the Werdlem Energy Signature Copies back in the Werdlem Empire had used the System’s own copying method as their basis. If anything, Rean already had a very good idea of how to approach this problem.

"So, Sister Orb, instead of trying to copy an energy signature, what we are going to do is isolate the exchange between the targets," Rean explained. "I believe the best way to go about this is to use the connection between Roan and me and work on something that could block this connection."

[Yes, that should do. Of course, your connection goes through the System. It’s not like you have a cable out there physically connecting the two of you. Fortunately for you, I’m the System now. I’m going to expose this connection so we can devise the right runes for the job.]

Luxa was sitting comfortably on Rean’s shoulder. Although she didn’t understand much of what the two were discussing, she was still quite curious about what they were doing. ’Rean, Rean! Shouldn’t you use the connection between Lunelle and me instead?’

Rean smiled. "Of course, we’re going to use you. However, unlike Roan and me, you don’t have a Sister Orb capable of exposing this connection. That’s why I’ll first work on something that I know could work on us. Then, I’ll try it on you and make the necessary modifications until we get a result."

[Just one thing.] Sister Orb took over from there. [Rean and Roan’s connection is on a completely different level because of the System. Rean, even if you can make something that interferes with this connection, the effects will be minimal. However, for Lunelle and Luxa, the effect should multiply many times over. Make sure you don’t discard a prototype just because the effect on you and Roan was negligible.]

Rean understood immediately. "I see. Very well. As soon as I get any result whatsoever, I’ll try it with Lunelle and Luxa."

The days passed, and Roan drove the airplane through the alternative route he had set previously. Other than, obviously, the Godly Creatures, nothing else really tried to block their path. It was actually a good thing. They were still very much south of Besgol, an area that remained quite densely populated with Godly Creatures.

By following a different route, they didn’t encounter as many Godly Creatures as before, but the twins’ group still bumped into a few Godly Predators here and there. Of course, because of their initial journey, their numbers had fallen quite a lot. Most of the predators in this region had already been dealt with by the twins’ group, leaving the Godly Beasts and Spawns mostly unaffected.

This time, with Aurundi following them closely, the Voltari couldn’t help but become increasingly shocked by the twins’ group’s power. The only ones who looked somewhat normal were Kachia and Lukay. Roan and the others, however, looked like monsters, especially whenever they fought the Godly Predators head-on and came out on top every single time.

However, what truly blew Aurundi’s mind was when another Godly Horror appeared. He almost came out to try to lure it away, but Roan told him to stay afar and just watch.

It wasn’t a particularly strong one. Its strength was likely around the level of an Initial Stage Law God. Nonetheless, the twins’ group eventually managed to kill it, even though the battle was considerably harder and several of them suffered injuries in the process.

’Impressive. This partial immunity they have against Godly Pressure stands out far too much when facing high-level Godly Creatures. To think I would see a Godly Horror dying at the hands of some Aura Gods and Zone Gods, and that was outside the Sacred Relic’s influence...’

’Still...’ Aurundi found one thing strange.

In the final moment, when Lukay had accumulated a large amount of energy to deliver the killing blow, the Godly Horror seemed to falter slightly. Aurundi had been following the twins’ group very closely, but he still wasn’t close enough to feel the moment the Sanctuary was deployed.

Roan also made sure that the Sanctuary remained active for only a second. It was just enough time to catch the Godly Horror by surprise, but not enough to give Aurundi the opportunity to examine the phenomenon himself.

Aurundi was almost certain that something had happened at that exact moment. However, when he asked about it, Roan simply said he had prepared a trap through his positioning, causing the Godly Horror to stumble on its own.

Aurundi couldn’t tell whether that explanation was true or not.

In any case, Celis eventually pulled the Godly Horror Crystal from the creature’s body, and the group continued on their way back to Besgol. After everything they had killed during the expedition, there was no way their Elite Exploration Mission could be considered a failure. The mission did provide Godly Crystal rewards as well, although the amount was nowhere near what the twins’ group had collected for themselves.

—

Thirty-six days had passed since they were attacked by the Natak Region.

Inside the Great Void, Rean held a collar and an anklet in his hands, a satisfied expression on his face. Countless tiny runes covered both pieces of equipment, and there were even more internally, forming several interconnected layers of inscriptions.

"Now, let’s give it another try."

The runes on the collar and anklet lit up for a few seconds. As that happened, Rean checked countless pieces of information passing in front of a screen, his eyes moving rapidly as he examined the results.

Rean and Sister Orb continued testing the equipment and checking the information for almost an entire hour. They adjusted the runes, tested different levels of interference, and repeated the process several times before Rean finally leaned back.

"This should do, right?" Rean asked.

[For Lunelle and Luxa, that is. For you and Roan, the interference the two of you would feel would be almost imperceptible.]

Another thing Rean had learned during this time was that the System connection he had with Roan wasn’t merely stronger than the connection between Luxa and Lunelle. It was almost impossible to gauge.

That made Rean both happy and sad at the same time.

Happy because it meant no one would really be able to interfere with his connection with Roan.

Sad because it meant no one would really be able to interfere with his connection with Roan.

Let’s be honest. If this had worked properly for Rean and Roan, both of them would have employed it without thinking twice. Knowing each other’s location and always feeling where the other was was one of the things they hated the most.

Too bad that dream ended there.

"Oh well..." Rean decided not to dwell on it.

"Luxa, Lunelle, come here," Rean called, making both Lunelle and Luxa appear in front of him.

Lunelle was eating her Godly Crystal again while Luxa looked curiously at the equipment in Rean’s hands. ’Is that it? Is that it?!’

Rean stroked her fur before putting the collar around her neck. "It should be. I made it with very resistant materials and with runes that should make the collar adjust to your body. As long as you don’t suddenly become enormous, it should feel pretty comfortable even if you grow a little."

Luxa immediately moved her head around, seemingly trying to get a better look at the collar.

Rean then went to Lunelle and carefully put the anklet around her leg. The Eternal Night Raven looked at it and didn’t seem very pleased with the new accessory.

*Peck, peck, peck...*

She immediately began pecking at it, although she wasn’t anywhere near strong enough to cause any damage.

Rean sighed. "I guess I’ll have to ask Roan to convince her somehow. I can’t do much about that."

Lunelle continued pecking at the anklet as if determined to prove that she didn’t want it there.

"Anyway, let’s turn it on." Rean looked toward Luxa. "Luxa, just circulate your Godly Energy and pour a little into the collar. If everything worked as planned, you should no longer be able to feel Lunelle’s location."

*Rawr!*

’Alright!’

Luxa eagerly poured a small amount of Godly Energy into the collar.

For a moment, nothing seemed to happen.

Then, the runes on the collar and anklet began to glow.
