Chapter 23

The brilliant light of a thousand crystal chandeliers bathed the grand imperial ballroom in a dazzling, golden opulence, casting a radiant halo over Maria Beaufort as she offered the crowd a flawless, angelic smile. To the assembly of high court nobles, she appeared as the very epitome of ethereal grace, a pristine jewel draped in the finest silk that caught every fragment of glittering light.

She basked completely in the suffocating wave of adoration that rushed toward her from every corner of the vast hall, maintaining a look of perfectly manufactured innocence while her internal thoughts churned with a calculating, triumphant satisfaction. Everything was unfolding exactly as she had designed; she had painstakingly manipulated her family and her reputation to ensure that she would be the undisputed star of this momentous eve. She refused to allow the original storyline of her inherited memories to dictate her destiny, and tonight was supposed to be the glorious threshold where she would finally captivate Crown Prince Ragnar, permanently securing her ascent and separating herself from the desperate noblemen currently flocking to her side like moths to a flame.

She greeted the gathering suitors with a sweet, clueless warmth, her melodic laughter echoing gracefully while one eye remained firmly fixed on the imperial dais where the prince sat watching.

Ragnar had been staring at her from his elevated perch for what felt like an eternity, his sharp gaze locked onto her golden form, yet he stubbornly refused to descend the marble stairs to claim her hand for the opening waltz. As the minutes stretched, a deep, frustrating irritation began to fester beneath Maria’s pious facade, though she continually consoled herself with the comforting reality that Sigrid was nowhere to be found, presumably weeping in the shadows of their estate or fleeing the capital in absolute disgrace.

That fragile peace shattered into dust when the heavy oak doors of the ballroom were thrown open, and the booming voice of the Imperial Herald echoed across the sudden silence of the hall, announcing, "Lady Sigrid Beaufort!"

Maria’s pristine expression instantly collapsed, a look of profound horror twisting her delicate features as she whipped her head toward the entrance, feeling the grand architecture of her elaborate plans crumble to ash in a single, agonizing heartbeat. In walked Sigrid, draped in a gown of the most outrageous, detestable crimson—a hue so deeply red it resembled fresh blood spilled upon a battlefield—yet the court did not view the garment with Maria’s absolute disgust.

Instead, an immediate, breathless awe swept through the grand ballroom, every noble lord and lady completely enchanted and captivated by the ethereal, terrifying majesty of the eldest Beaufort daughter.

Sigrid stepped onto the polished marble with a crooked, mocking smile playing upon her lips, her silver hair shimmering like moonlight over fire against the rich, dark tulle of her gown. Even Prince Ragnar stood up from his imperial throne, his eyes widening as he stared down at Sigrid with an intense, sudden fascination that caused Maria’s blood to boil with a silent, murderous rage. Sigrid fully expected the profound reaction her grand entrance would provoke, but witnessing the sheer shock of the high court brought a genuine, dark amusement to her crimson eyes. Her gaze drifted lazily across the crowd until it locked onto Maria, whose face was distorted with a primitive, lethal hatred that she was failing miserably to conceal behind her usual angelic mask.

Sigrid giggled softly to herself, leaning slightly forward as she muttered, "Your countenance betrays your malice, dear step-sister," amused that her stepsister was completely failing to maintain her pristine exterior before turning her attention toward the far side of the ballroom where her parents stood frozen in absolute disbelief.

The look of unadulterated fury and paralyzing shock burning across her stepmother’s face made every moment of secrecy entirely worth the effort, and Sigrid took another deliberate, slow step deeper into the heart of the imperial hall. Within moments, a dense crowd of captivated noblemen began to swarm around her, desperate to catch her attention, while several high-born women attempted to project intimidating glares, viewing her as an immediate, dangerous threat to their own matrimonial ambitions.

The chaotic display was far too delicious to ignore, but Sigrid smoothly navigated the sea of suitors, her posture unyielding and majestic as she made her way toward the imperial dais to fulfill the strict protocol of the court. It was common aristocratic practice to present a formal bow before the reigning King and Queen prior to engaging in any proper festivities, and as Sigrid lowered her frame in a grateful, calculated reverence, the royal monarchs acknowledged her greeting with a nod of approval. Yet it was Prince Ragnar who acknowledged her presence a bit too intensely, his burning gaze tracking her every movement with a predatory interest that made Sigrid’s knuckles whiten beneath her gloves.

It required every ounce of her formidable self-control to restrain the violent urge to leap forward and break his neck right then and there, but she reminded herself that patience was her greatest weapon in this new life. Being hasty and succumbing to her ancient wrath would only lead to the same execution block that had claimed her in her earlier life; she would ensure her vengeance was carried out methodically, dismantling her enemies piece by piece. She turned away from the dais and returned to the periphery of the dance floor, only to be immediately assaulted by the hostile approach of her father, her stepmother, and a swiftly recovering Maria.

Her stepsister had already forced her features back into the epitome of a sweet, unjustly wronged angel, while Duke Vesper fumed with a dangerous, red-faced malice and Duchess Genevieve looked as though she wanted Sigrid dead on the spot. Sigrid merely offered them a pleasant, untroubled smile, finding the entire confrontation to be utterly lovely as her father leaned in, demanding in a harsh, hushed whisper, "What madness possesses you, Sigrid? By what right do you grace these halls?"

"To pay homage to the crown, Father, as a daughter of the kingdom should and for the ball of course." Sigrid replied smoothly, her tone dripping with an elegant disdain that caused the Duke to growl low in his throat.

Duchess Genevieve stepped forward, her voice trembling with a venomous outrage as she hissed, "Has your reason utterly forsaken you? You fled our domain in a state of weeping, vows having been carried to us that you would absent yourself from this court tonight!"

Sigrid feigned a look of profound shock, tilting her head with a deceptive innocence as she inquired, "Pray, did such an admission ever pass my lips, or did you merely console yourselves with the fantasy?"

Maria, unable to control her mounting envy as her eyes scanned the incredibly fine materials, crystals, and masterful lacework of Sigrid’s crimson gown, interjected sharply, "Yet by what means did you secure such attire, Sister?"

Sigrid let out a soft laugh, stating coldly, "I commissioned this masterpiece from the hands of Lady Marigold herself, utilizing my own money. Since my own lord father seemed determined to present me before the high court in rags, I chose to remedy the insult personally."

Duke Vesper flinched slightly, a fleeting look of guilt crossing his stern features before hardening once more, but Sigrid dismissed his silent discomfort with a wave of her gloved hand, declaring, "It is of no consequence, for once this night concludes, the bonds that shackles me to this house shall be severed forevermore"

Maria let out a pitiful, fragile gasp, her eyes welling with manufactured tears as she asked in a trembling, sorrowful voice, "What ever do you mean, sister?"

Sigrid’s expression darkened instantly, her crimson eyes flashing with absolute ice as she snapped, "It seems my words keep falling upon deaf ears. Do not call me your sister again, Maria. I am not your sister, nor have I any desire to be. Continue testing my restraint, and I shall personally educate you on the cost of disregarding a warning."

Infuriated by Sigrid’s sheer audacity and the blatant threat to her daughter’s future crown, Duchess Genevieve lost all sense of aristocratic decorum and lunged forward, her fingers clawing through the air in a desperate attempt to grab Sigrid by the shoulder and drag her from the hall.

Sigrid, whose senses were perpetually on high alert from a lifetime of betrayal, swiftly and elegantly stepped to the side, allowing her stepmother’s momentum to carry her forward into empty air. With a loud rustle of expensive silk and a sharp cry of shock,

Duchess Genevieve fell flat onto the polished marble floor, sprawling ungracefully before the gathered high society of Arkovia and causing dozens of nearby nobles to turn their heads in stunned silence. Duke Vesper’s face flushed a deep, violent purple as he stood paralyzed with absolute shame, watching his wife flail on the ground like an undisciplined child while the surrounding court began to whisper behind their silk fans.

Sigrid merely looked down at the pathetic display with a gaze of profound disinterest, her crimson eyes cold and detached as her father fiercely commanded, "Return to my side this instant, Sigrid! You shall not escape the duties you owe to the honor of House Beaufort!"

Sigrid did not pay the slightest bit of attention to his furious demands, completely turning her back on her disgraced family as she began to search the vast, crowded hall for the specific key she required for her grand design. However, her shifting mood instantly depleted into pure disgust when an aggravatingly familiar, arrogant voice echoed from behind her shoulder, interrupting her thoughts with a practiced, noble cadence.

"Will the beautiful maiden grant me the privilege of her company for this dance, or must the court be deprived of its finest vision?" the voice murmured smoothly, and Sigrid turned slowly to find Prince Ragnar standing before her, his perfect, golden prince smile plastered across his handsome face. It was the exact, calculated expression of charm he utilized on every impressionable lady in the empire to make them fall hopelessly in love with him, and it was the single thing she hated most about his deceptive existence. A deep, unyielding frown adorned Sigrid’s face as she stared directly into the eyes of the man who had thoroughly ruined her life, the dark embers of her judgment sight swirling within her crimson gaze as she prepared to answer the monster who stood before her.
