Chapter 22

The rhythmic clatter of carriage wheels against the cobblestones offered a soothing rhythm to the tense silence hanging within the velvet-lined interior. Sigrid leaned her head back against the cushioned seat, her crimson eyes reflecting the darkening hues of the twilight sky outside the window. Earlier that afternoon, she and Lilith had departed the Beaufort estate, having already instructed a housemaid to fabricate a tale of Sigrid fleeing the grounds in tears. Her destination was not the imperial palace, but rather the secluded estate of Lady Marigold.

It was a deliberate, calculated detour; Sigrid had specifically requested to don her gown at the dressmaker’s private residence to prevent any prying eyes from catching a glimpse of her before the grand unveiling. Many high-born ladies frequently patronized Marigold’s establishment for last-minute alterations and adjustments, and Sigrid, well-aware of her uncanny ability to attract conflict wherever she stepped, had no intention of allowing a premature confrontation to spoil her design. Tonight required absolute secrecy until the trap was sprung.

Beside her, Lilith shifted nervously, her hands tightly clasped over her gown as she peered out the opposite window at the passing rows of gas lanterns. "My lady," the maid murmured, her voice laced with quiet hesitation, "Lady Marigold’s residence is quite a distance from the grand promenade, is it not? I fear the hour grows late."

Sigrid did not turn her gaze from the fading light of the horizon, a faint, cold smile touching her lips. "Yes, it is far, Lilith. Let the distance serve its purpose." Outside, the sky was rapidly bruising into night, the exact hour when the noble houses of Arkovia would be assembling at the palace gates in their extravagant, shimmering regalia. The imagery was vivid in Sigrid’s mind; the grand ballroom would already be filling with vibrant silks and cascading jewels, and the most eye-catching ornament among them would undoubtedly be Maria. With her radiant golden hair and the masterpiece of a gown their father had so lovingly financed, her stepsister would easily capture the gaze of the entire court, and quite possibly, the attention of the Crown Prince himself.

Let her have her brief moment of stolen sunlight, Sigrid thought, for her descent into the shadows would be all the sweeter when I strip everything away. She could hardly contain her anticipation for the exact moment Maria’s pristine facade shattered.

Lilith watched her mistress’s shifting expression, a shiver running down her spine at the detached malice radiating from the young noblewoman. "My lady," the maid whispered, unable to suppress her curiosity any longer, "do you intend to reveal Lady Maria’s treacherous behavior to the high court this evening? Will you expose her deceit before the imperial family?"

Sigrid finally turned her head, her crimson gaze locking onto Lilith with an intensity that made the servant catch her breath. "To simply expose her would be far too merciful, Lilith. It would be a swift execution, and I demand a far more agonizing ruin. I shall crush her entirely, but nothing of significance begins tonight. There is a precise season for everything under the sun. Tonight will merely be what one might call... a sweet treat before the feast."

The ominous weight of the words caused Lilith to tremble slightly, pulling her cloak tighter around her shoulders as Sigrid continued, her voice dropping to a dangerous, soft cadence that echoed off the carriage walls. "I will have my retribution against every soul who has crossed me. I will dismantle my father, utterly destroy my stepmother, and bring ruin upon all who have dared to kindle my wrath."

Panic flickered across Lilith’s features, her breath hitching as she stared at her mistress in sheer bewilderment. "My lady... are you certain you should be revealing these grave plans to me?" the maid asked, her voice cracking under the weight of the confession. Lilith could not fathom why her mistress was suddenly entrusting her with such perilous schemes of vengeance. In her limited understanding, the Beaufort family had done nothing to Sigrid save for ignoring her presence and favoring her younger sister; yet the words flowing from Sigrid’s lips were heavy with a deep, ancient fury that felt far too massive for a simple household rivalry.

Sigrid offered a quiet, melodic laugh that lacked any true warmth. "Well, I have found myself in dire need of a confidante to speak of these matters with, Lilith. And truthfully, if your tongue happens to slip and you betray my confidence to my stepmother, I find that I do not care in the slightest. The more adversaries I must face at once, the merrier the spectacle shall be when you all fall together."

Lilith paled drastically, her heart hammering against her ribs as she bowed her head in a frantic show of loyalty. "I swear to you, my lady, I will not let a single word you have spoken slip past my lips. My loyalty remains with you." Sigrid merely giggled, a sound that sent another wave of unease through the maid, before turning her face back toward the glass.

Privately, Sigrid sneered at the maid’s desperate vows. She knew better than to trust the fleeting loyalty of a servant; after all, her previous life as Queen had taught her that those she held closest were the very ones destined to plunge the dagger into her back.

In that dark, forgotten timeline, she had clearly discerned that one of her own personal maids had been bribed by Maria to forge the treasonous correspondence between herself and Duke Soren Aethermor—the very letters that had sealed her execution. Whether it was Lilith or another girl in the estate, it mattered little. Sigrid scoffed under her breath, the bitter taste of betrayal fueling the fire in her veins.

The carriage ground to a sudden halt, the driver’s voice cutting through the heavy atmosphere from the perch above. "My lady, we have arrived at Lady Marigold’s estate." Lilith moved with frantic haste, eager to escape the suffocating tension of the cabin, and threw open the carriage door to assist her mistress down.

Standing upon the cobblestone pathway, Lady Marigold was already waiting beneath the grand archway of her manor, a knowing, elegant smirk gracing her lips as she watched Sigrid approach. "You have chosen a remarkably late hour to prepare for the imperial court, Lady Sigrid," Marigold remarked, her voice dripping with refined amusement as she gestured for them to enter. "Most ladies would have been at the palace gates an hour ago."

Sigrid swept past her into the warmth of the foyer, her posture regal and unbothered. "Why rush to join the common herd? If one is to make an entrance, it is only proper to do so while draped in the finest craftsmanship the capital has ever seen."

Marigold closed the heavy oak doors, leading the way down a long, candlelit corridor lined with rolls of imported velvet and silk. "Your faith in my abilities is profound, my lady," the dressmaker noted, though a small hint of anxiety touched her gaze. "But tell me, what if the final result fails to meet the lofty expectations you have placed upon my house?"

Sigrid did not hesitate, her voice firm and absolute. "I would never have entrusted my image to your hands if I did not already possess the absolute certainty that you could achieve the impossible." A genuine, grateful smile broke across Marigold’s features at the rare praise, and she unlocked the double doors to her private sanctuary, stepping aside to gesture toward the center of the room.

When Sigrid’s eyes fell upon the display mannequin, her breath hitched, her crimson eyes widening in genuine astonishment. The gown before her was nothing short of a masterpiece.

Lady Marigold stepped closer, her hands gesturing gracefully to the fabric as she began to describe her creation. "The garment is designed as an off-shoulder ball gown, utilizing a structured satin base for the bodice to provide both support and complete opacity. The voluminous, airy skirt is meticulously constructed from multiple layers of deep crimson tulle to create a striking, dramatic silhouette. I have utilized intricate black lace appliques as decorative overlays, cascading down from the structured bodice and trailing along the skirt’s hemline. To elevate the grandeur for the imperial court, I embedded subtle beadwork, delicate sequins, and rare crystals into the lace detailing to ensure it catches the candlelight perfectly. Furthermore, I ensured the embellishments were balanced, so the weight will not hinder your movements on the ballroom floor."

Sigrid heard the dressmaker’s words, but her conscious mind did not truly register them. All she could see was the physical manifestation of her rebirth. Tonight, she would cast aside the rags of her past; tonight marked the definitive end of her submission and the true commencement of the living hell she would inflict upon her enemies.

"Thank you, Marigold," Sigrid said softly, her fingers gently brushing the edge of the crimson tulle. "It is everything I required."

Marigold bowed her head, her voice softening. "The pleasure is entirely mine, my lady."

Sigrid glanced up, noting the faint, melancholic shadow that suddenly crossed the older woman’s face. "Are you not attending the ball tonight? Surely a woman of your standing received an invitation to the imperial court."

Marigold looked away, a sad smile touching her lips as she shook her head. "No, my lady. The palace holds no joy for me."

Before Sigrid could offer a reply, a sudden, violent rushing sound filled her ears, and the candlelit room blurred into a blinding haze of light. A vision fractured her mind with brutal clarity. She saw a happy Lady Marigold, dressed in a breathtaking, vibrant gown, jumping happily by her window as she awaited a guest with absolute joy in her heart. But the scene shifted, and a wealthy nobleman walked through the door, his arm tightly wound around another, haughtier woman. The man coldly informed Marigold that he would no longer be escorting her to the ball, breaking a solemn promise he had made weeks prior. The vision ended with the agonizing sight of Marigold weeping in absolute despair, tearing her beautiful garment to shreds with her bare hands in a fit of grief and betrayal.

The memory vanished as quickly as it had arrived, leaving Sigrid blinking back the sudden dizziness. She stared at the dressmaker, silently wondering why the vision appeared now and not before, did they specifically targeted individuals who had suffered the stabs of betrayal but Lilith was not betrayed, What factors were involved.

She locked the revelation away in the back of her mind to think about later. Turning her gaze back to Marigold, she spoke with a quiet, knowing gravity. "That is your choice to make, Lady Marigold. The past is a graveyard, my lady. Do not build a home among the headstones." Marigold gasped slightly, her eyes widening in shock at the specificity of the statement, though she could not find the words to ask how the young lady could possibly know her pain.

Sigrid broke the silence, turning sharply to her maid. "Lilith, retrieve the gown. Let us see how it favors my form." The maid scurried forward, carefully lifting the heavy layers of crimson and black as they retreated behind the velvet changing screen.

When Sigrid finally stepped back out into the candlelight, the room seemed to fall completely silent. The gown clung to her frame perfectly, the dramatic off-shoulder cut accentuating the sharp lines of her collarbones, while her striking silver hair fell against the deep red tulle like moonlight over a field of blood. Her crimson eyes gleamed with a terrifying, ethereal beauty that made her look less like a noble lady and more like a vengeful deity.

Sigrid looked at her reflection, a dark, satisfied grin spreading across her face as she turned her eyes toward the stunned dressmaker. "I will ensure that he pays for what he did to you, Marigold," Sigrid stated softly, her voice carrying the weight of an absolute decree.

Lady Marigold stood frozen in complete confusion, her brow furrowing as she tried to comprehend the bizarre, comforting vow. Without offering a single word of explanation, Sigrid turned toward her trembling maid. "Come, Lilith. The hour has arrived, and our audience awaits." Together, they swept out of the manor and re-entered the waiting carriage, their smiles broad and sharp as the horses surged forward into the dark, carrying the true storm directly toward the palace gates.
