Chapter 59: The Nature of Mark 8
Another day past...the training hall fell into a tense silence the moment Victor Cain stepped forward.
It wasn’t the kind of silence born from discipline.
It was heavier than that, it was expectant and had an uneasy feeling to it. Like everyone present understood, on some instinctive level, that what they were about to hear would define everything that came next.
Markus stood near the center of the hall, arms loosely at his sides, his expression unreadable. Beside him, Ash adjusted his mask slightly, the faint glint of embedded particles catching the overhead lights.
Reina stood a few steps apart, her posture calm but distant, as if she were both present and elsewhere at the same time.
Behind them, the others lingered. Blade towered over most of the group, his massive frame unmoving, the crystalline formations along his dark skin catching light in sharp, fractured reflections.
Vire was standing with his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his sword, his eyes sharp and ever calculating.
Kael leaned against a pillar, looking far younger than the rest, his expression somewhere between boredom and quiet curiosity....The scars on his hands were always a distinctive feature.
Victor took his time before speaking, "You’ve all been brought here for one reason," he began, his voice steady, carrying easily across the hall. "Not to fight...not yet at least. Today is about understanding what you are...just like the previous day."
A faint shift rippled through the group, "For weeks," Victor continued, "we’ve been collecting data, blood samples doing tissue analysis and behavioral responses. Everything is authorized before things... escalated."
He paused briefly, letting that sink in, "And now, we finally understand it."
Markus’s gaze sharpened slightly.
Victor raised a hand, almost like a lecturer about to begin a lesson.
"The entity you are all infected with...Mark 8...is not a conventional virus." he paused, "some of you may have been already aware of that fact." He continued looking straight into Markus’s eyes.
A murmur moved through the room.
"It is a parasite." Silence slammed back down.
Victor let the word linger, "Mark 8 does not spread randomly. It does not mutate without direction. It targets one thing, and one thing only...human carbon structures."
Ash’s head tilted slightly.
"Everything it does," Victor continued, "is based on that interaction. It invades, binds to carbon at a molecular level, and then restructures it...for some it may do that slowly or instantly."
He turned, his gaze landing directly on Markus, "Take Markus, for example."
All eyes shifted towards Markus.
"When Markus makes physical contact with another human, Mark 8 transfers immediately. It enters the target’s body, locks onto their carbon structure, and initiates crystallization."
Victor stepped closer, his tone sharpening, "Not partial crystallization, not gradual conversion but in an instant."
Markus didn’t react outwardly, but his fingers flexed slightly, "And here’s where it becomes... interesting," Victor added. "The crystallization is not random. It is directed."
A few people shifted uncomfortably.
"Markus doesn’t just infect," Victor said. "He commands. The parasite responds to him, shaping the crystallized structure based on his intent."
He let that settle before finishing: "That is why Markus is classified as a Command Type."
A quiet tension spread through the hall.
Victor turned smoothly, now facing Ash, "Ash presents a different case."
Ash remained still.
"When Mark 8 infected him, it localized," Victor explained. "His lungs were the primary site of crystallization."
A few heads turned in surprise, "Unlike Markus, Ash’s ability does not rely on external targets," Victor continued. "The process occurs within his own body."
Ash exhaled slowly, and for a brief second, the faint shimmer of microscopic particles caught the light.
"Each breath he releases carries crystallized fragments," Victor said. "Diamond particulates. Extremely fine and highly reactive."
Victor gestured toward Ash’s mask, "That mask you see? It’s not for protection. It’s storage."
Ash said nothing.
"The parasite operates autonomously in his case," Victor added. "He does not control the formation process. It happens whether he wills it or not."
Victor paused, "But once those particles exist..."
His eyes narrowed slightly, "He can use them."
A beat followed, "That places Ash in the Action Type classification."
The distinction hung in the air.
Victor shifted his attention again.
"Reina."
The room seemed to quiet further.
Reina didn’t move.
Victor studied her for a moment longer than the others, "Reina... breaks everything."
A few people exchanged glances.
"We have no consistent data," Victor admitted. "Her strain of Mark 8 behaves differently from all recorded cases."
He took a slow breath, "No predictable patterns, no stable interaction model with no clear limitations."
Reina’s expression didn’t change.
"The only conclusion we can draw," Victor said, "is that her infection is... separate."
A pause.
"A different strain entirely."
Even Markus looked at her now.
Victor didn’t elaborate further, "Which makes her..." he continued, choosing his words carefully, "...Part of the Shiba class."
That landed harder than anything else.
Victor turned again, this time toward Blade.
"Blade."
The massive man stepped forward slightly, the crystalline formations along his skin catching the light in jagged reflections.
"Blade’s case is more straightforward," Victor said. "Mark 8 has enhanced his physical structure."
Blade rolled one shoulder slowly, the movement heavy and controlled.
"Strength, durability, speed, stamina and edurance. All significantly elevated."
Victor gestured toward the crystalline formations, "In addition, Mark 8 has reinforced his body externally. These crystal structures act as both armor and weapon."
Blade remained silent, "Unlike Markus, his ability is not centered on external control," Victor added. "But he still directs the manifestation of his enhancements."
Victor nodded once, "That places Blade in the Command Type category."
Blade gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.
Victor shifted again, "Kael."
Kael straightened slightly, pushing himself off the pillar.
"Another anomaly," Victor said.
Kael smirked faintly.
"His strain differs from both standard and Reina’s variation," Victor continued. "We are still analyzing its behavior."
Kael shrugged lightly, as if none of this concerned him.
"For now," Victor said, "he remains under observation."
"Vire" Victor saidm
Vire stepped forward with an unreadable expression.
"Well Vire here is another Shiba class....For him he seems to have a neurological link with his Mark 8 but visibly he has a diamond sword fused with his right hand."
Victor continued, "For him it was decided that he is a Command Type."
That didn’t sound reassuring.
Victor stepped back slightly, scanning the group as a whole.
"Now," he said, his tone shifting, "we move on to something equally important."
A faint tension returned occured.
"Diamond rankings."
That got everyone’s attention.
"The crystals produced by Mark 8 are not uniform," Victor explained. "They vary in strength, durability, and structural integrity."
He raised a hand, counting off, "Blue diamonds are the highest tier....The perfect all rounder"
A quiet murmur.
"Maximum durability, maximum sharpness with maximum stability."
Markus’s eyes flickered slightly looking at his hand that was the blue colour.
"Gray diamonds fall beneath them," Victor continued. "Still strong, still dangerous but inferior in all measurable aspects... except fir the strength application."
Blade glanced down at his own arm briefly.
"And followed by..." Victor said, his voice flattening slightly, "...white diamonds."
A few people shifted.
"The weakest form," he said bluntly. "Unstable, fragile. Barely worth noting...they are beat by the colourless one...These white ones are useless."
A pause.
"We’ve observed them primarily in lower-tier infected subjects."
Another pause.
"Bottom teir trash, in simpler terms."
That word lingered uncomfortably.
Victor turned slightly, gesturing toward Blade, "Blade’s crystalline structures are gray-tier."
Blade didn’t react, but the information clearly registered.
"Which places him below the highest threshold," Victor added.
The implication was obvious. Victor let the silence stretch before concluding.
"This classification system is not for curiosity," he said. "It defines your limits. Your potential and your place in what comes next."
No one spoke.
"For now," Victor said, turning away slightly, "this is where your understanding begins."
The tension in the room didn’t fade. If anything, it only deepened because now, for the first time, they knew exactly what they were and just how far they still had to go.
