Chapter 58: Selection

  • Next Chapter

A few days has passed and Markus found himself in Victors office yet again.

The air in Victor Cain’s office had shifted.

Not dramatically, not loudly but enough that Markus felt it.

A line had been crossed somewhere between memory and decision, and now everything moving forward carried weight. Not speculation, not theory but action.

Victor stood near the window, hands clasped behind his back, watching the endless snowfall stretch across the Russian landscape. For a long moment, he said nothing, as if allowing Markus to settle into what came next.

Then, "Markus." His voice was calm, grounded and absolute.

Markus turned slightly.

"You have seen failure," Victor continued. "You have experienced it and survived it."

Markus didn’t respond.

"Most men break under that," Victor said. "They retreat. They hesitate." A pause, "You didn’t."

Markus’s jaw tightened slightly, "I ran away," he said.

Victor turned his head just enough to look at him, "You adapted," he corrected.

Silence followed after that acclimation.

Then Victor stepped away from the window, his presence filling the room as he approached closer.

"The standard placed before you," he said, "does not fall to your ambition."

He stopped in front of Markus, "It falls to your ability."

The words settled heavily as they resonated with Markus.

"You are not being prepared to inherit something ordinary," Victor continued. "You are being prepared to define what comes next."

Markus held his gaze, "And if I don’t agree with what that is?" he asked.

Victor didn’t hesitate, "Sadly your agreement is irrelevant."

Of course it was.

Markus exhaled slowly, "What do you even want me to do?"

A faint shift in Victor’s expression. It was approval, it was subtle but present.

"Come," he said, gesturing to something else.

The training hall was massive.

It had an industrial look to but it was cold.

Steel walls reinforced with layered plating. Observation decks lined up on the upper levels, filled with personnel already preparing equipment, monitoring systems and recording data.

This wasn’t a room for practice, it was a room made specifically for evaluation.

Markus stepped in beside Victor, his eyes scanning the space.

There were markings across the floor, there were large larcesarations...deep cuts in the asphalt with distance grids. Reinforced barriers designed to withstand something far beyond normal human capability.

"They’ve been waiting....that team of yours," Victor said.

Markus followed his gaze and at the far end of the hall, figures stood in a loose formation.

Some still, some shifting slightly. All of them were different.

"Bring them forward," Victor instructed.

A voice echoed from above, "Subjects, step forward."

They moved, one by one.

Markus recognized them as they approached, Ash came first.

His posture was tighter than before, his breathing controlled but still carrying that faint strain, like every inhale mattered more than it should. The device at his side hummed softly, connected to the system that kept him stable.

But his eyes were sharp and focused... equipped with an intensity that wasn’t there before.

Next was Reina. She walked with a calm that didn’t match the room. Her two different colored eyes caught the light differently, one reflecting something almost unnatural beneath the surface. There was no visible strain in her movements.

No instability, which made her more dangerous than the rest.

Behind them came others equipped with unknown faces to Markus.

"Who are they..."Markus asked.

"They are the ones affected outside of the lab....the ones that female employee told us about." Victor answered.

"So these are men and women pulled from whatever remained after the Mark VIII incident when it broke out huh...most of them look a little frail don’t they." Said Markus.

And then in that moment a heavier step.

Blade.

He stood out immediately. He was tall, he had broad shoulders, he was mascular and was dark in complection.

His presence alone shifted the air around him. His skin carried that crystalline structure, like diamond fragments embedded beneath the surface, spreading across his arms, his neck, partially along his face.

It didn’t look like damage inflicted on him, it looked like reinforcement.

Markus’s eyes lingered on him briefly.

Then another figure stepped forward with an omnibus aura.

Vire.

He was calm and still. One hand resting lightly near the hilt of a blade at his side. There was something unnatural in the way he held it, like the weapon wasn’t separate from him.

Like it belonged right there or worse...Like it was part of him and finally..

Kael...He looked the youngest. A teenager, at most, he had a lot of scars on his hands.

Which made his presence here more unsettling than the others.

He didn’t carry the same visible signs of transformation, no crystals anywhere on his body and no external distortion but his eyes...

They were alert, too alert.

Markus stepped forward slightly, his voice steady, "These are the ones who survived integration?"

Victor nodded, "The ones who adapted," he said.

Markus’s gaze moved across them again, "And the others?"

Victor didn’t answer, he didn’t need to.

Markus looked back at the group.

Ash met his eyes.

Reina didn’t react at all.

Blade stood there unmoving while Vire’s grip shifted slightly.

Kael just watched.

Victor stepped forward, "Listen carefully," he said.

The room quieted instantly, "What you have experienced is not an accident," he continued. "It is not random and it is not a gift."

His gaze sharpened, "It is a threshold."

The word echoed slightly, "You were exposed to something that was designed to destroy human limitation," Victor said. "Most of humanity cannot withstand it."

He paused, "You did."

A subtle shift moved through the group it was present.

"You have been selected," Victor continued, "not by choice... but by capability."

Markus stepped forward now, taking position beside him, "This isn’t training in the traditional sense," Markus said. "We’re not here to teach you how to fight."

His eyes moved across them, "You’re here to understand what you are."

A pause.

"And what you can do."

Ash spoke first, "What exactly are we?" he asked.

His voice was controlled, but there was tension beneath it.

Markus didn’t hesitate, "Human," he said, "we are all human."

Then, "...Just slightly modified."

Silence followed.

Reina tilted her head slightly, "And the rules?" she asked.

Markus glanced at Victor briefly, then back at her, "The Mark VIII only affects humans," he said. "It does not extend beyond that. It doesn’t interact with animals. It doesn’t alter the environment."

His voice steadied, "It changes us."

Blade’s voice came next, deep and grounded, "How?"

Markus looked at him, "Differently," he said. "For each of you....the type of infection you have will always be different to that of another."

Victor stepped forward slightly, "Your abilities will fall into two primary functions," he explained.

"Internal," Markus continued. "Or external."

Ash frowned slightly, "Meaning?"

"Some of you," Markus said, "affect yourselves." His eyes shifted to Ash, "Your body, youur systems and your limits."

Ash’s breathing tightened slightly. He understood.

Markuscontinued, "Others... affect humans around them."

A shift with subtle discomfort, "Directly," Markus added he said looking down his hand.

Raina’s gaze sharpened, "And me?" she asked.

Markus hesitated just briefly.

Then, "You’re different." The room stilled most eyes were directed to Reina.

"You are the only confirmed exception," he continued. "Your ability doesn’t follow the standard structure."

Victor’s voice followed, "Which makes you the most important subject here."

"And as so...you will be classified under another bracket entirely....since your ability can deteriorate anything that is alive....your strain is very different and your classified in the Shiba division.."

Raina didn’t react outwardly but something behind her eyes shifted.

Kael spoke next, "So what... we’re weapons?"

Markus looked at him, "No," he said. A pause, "Not yet."

That answer didn’t help.

Markus stepped forward again, "This phase is classification," he said. "We determine what each of you can do. How fast, how strong and how stable you are."

His voice sharpened slightly, "How dangerous."

The word landed.

"Your speed will be measured," Victor added. "Your reaction time, your durability and your limits."

Blade cracked his neck slightly, "And if we don’t have limits?" he asked.

Victor looked at him, "Then we find them."

Silence.

Vire finally spoke, his voice quiet, "And after that?"

Markus answered, "Then we decide how to use you."

That settled heavily across the group.

Ash looked down briefly.

Reina remained still.

Kael shifted his weight and Blade didn’t move at all.

Victor turned slightly, addressing the observation deck.

"Begin preliminary recording," he said.

Lights shifted slightly, systems activating as the room came alive.

Markus stepped back, looking at them one final time, "This is where it starts," he said.

A pause, "For all of you."

No one moved immediately because something unspoken hung in the air between them.

They had survived but survival wasn’t the end.

It was the beginning of something else. Something none of them fully understood and as they stood there, waiting...The truth settled quietly into place.

They were no longer being observed as people, they were being measured as possibilities and whatever came next would decide what they became.
