Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 106 - 103: Probing the Depths
Chapter 106: Chapter 103: Probing the Depths
Just before entering, Chen Xing caught a glimpse of Cao Nan peeking out from the entrance of the mess hall.
He seemed anxious, but not to the point of rushing out desperately, as one might expect of a son.
After entering the door, there was another hallway ahead.
The hallway was long and narrow, so much so that two people would have to turn sideways to pass each other.
’A good place for a murder!’
Chen Xing didn’t let her guard down.
’Killing someone here would be all too easy.’
However, since Situ Yuanyuan had gone to the trouble of setting a trap, she surely didn’t intend for Chen Xing to die here.
They walked for over ten minutes through the hallways alone.
Cao Guangrong wanted to shout but couldn’t make a sound. He wanted to struggle but was unable.
He glanced at Chen Xing, his eyes pitiful and helpless.
Chen Xing’s face was a mask of cold cruelty.
She wasn’t angry, even after realizing Situ Yuanyuan had plotted against her.
Instead, she decided to take this opportunity to probe for some answers.
She wanted to see if this Cao Guangrong, who claimed to be her father, truly had a background powerful enough to get him here, or if there was something else going on.
After a few more short hallways, Chen Xing was brought into an interrogation room.
Chen Xing sat alone in a room made of transparent glass.
Before entering, she and Cao Guangrong had been separated.
Cao Guangrong was taken to an adjacent room.
The room was extremely well soundproofed; an ordinary person wouldn’t be able to hear anything from outside or the next room.
But... it was no match for Chen Xing’s sharp hearing.
Though it wasn’t very clear, she could faintly hear Cao Guangrong talking to someone.
She couldn’t make out the words, but his tone was obviously no longer the frantic shouting from before.
Instead, it was calm, and even seemed a little respectful.
’Perhaps... he’s on the phone with Old Master Cao?’
Unable to hear clearly, Chen Xing gave up trying to listen.
A few minutes later, the door opened.
The person who entered wasn’t Situ Yuanyuan, but the soldier who had brought them here.
He was no longer polite like before. With a contemptuous tone and the expression of someone looking at a corpse, he asked, "Do you know why you were brought here?"
Chen Xing didn’t speak, just stared at him coldly.
"Looks like you won’t even know how you died when it happens."
"Situ Yuanyuan went to all this trouble to capture me. Surely she’s not too afraid to even come see me in person?" Chen Xing’s tone was even more contemptuous than the soldier’s.
She disdained not only the soldier, but Situ Yuanyuan even more.
The soldier was speechless. ’She’s smart, at least. She knows she offended Miss Situ.’
’But where does she get this nerve?’
’Is she just relying on that father of hers, Cao Guangrong?’
’That’s nowhere near enough!’
At best, Cao Guangrong had some ability, or perhaps he was a wealthy man before the apocalypse.
Now... in the National Capital Safety Zone, he was just an ordinary person—an extremely ordinary one at that.
"You still want to see Miss Situ? Keep dreaming. Since you know you’ve offended Miss Situ, you should also know that there’s no place for you in this safety zone!"
The implication was clear: she was going to die today.
Chen Xing looked up at the security camera directly overhead, her icy gaze seeming to bore through the lens like a glacier, reaching straight to the other side.
On the other side of the camera, Situ Yuanyuan was startled by that gaze.
Realizing she had been unconsciously frightened, she was instantly filled with vexation and rage. She shot up from her seat, yanked open the door, and stormed out.
’What’s there to be afraid of?’
’Chen Xing is in my grasp now. The one who should be afraid is her!’
When she opened the door to the interrogation room, she saw the soldier who had been so contemptuous toward Chen Xing just moments before, now cowering in a corner and staring at Chen Xing as if he’d seen a ghost.
Situ Yuanyuan: "..."
It had only been about ten seconds since she’d left the other room to come to the interrogation room.
"What’s going on?" Situ Yuanyuan glared disapprovingly at the useless soldier.
The soldier’s eyes darted away, and he trembled too much to speak.
"Get out!" Situ Yuanyuan was furious.
He was one of her better assistants, yet he was this useless. He was utterly disgracing her.
At her command, the soldier didn’t move. All of his attention was fixed on Chen Xing.
Only when Chen Xing glanced at the door did he react, bolting out of the room as if he’d been granted a pardon.
He left Situ Yuanyuan standing there, completely bewildered.
"What did you do to him?" She couldn’t imagine what Chen Xing could have done to make someone that terrified.
The corners of Chen Xing’s lips curled, forming a beautiful arc with her jawline.
Just now, when she’d heard the door to Situ Yuanyuan’s room open, Chen Xing had taught the soldier a little lesson.
She hadn’t done anything too drastic. A few needles had simply appeared in her hand, and she’d pricked him with them.
At first, he’d been defiant.
So, before Situ Yuanyuan entered, Chen Xing gave him a full acupuncture treatment.
Her movements were so fast...
By the time Situ Yuanyuan came through the door, Chen Xing was already sitting properly back in her seat.
Getting stuck with needles really hurt.
But as a soldier, he could endure the pain. What he feared was Chen Xing’s speed.
She was so fast he couldn’t see her movements clearly. If she wanted to kill him, it would be as easy as turning over her hand.
He was so afraid that he didn’t even register the pain in his body, let alone hear what Situ Yuanyuan was saying.
At that moment, he had no idea that Chen Xing had countless ways to make him wish he were dead, nor did he know that his life would soon be over.
Why would Chen Xing be so careless as to leave a witness alive?
The only reason she hadn’t killed him outright was to avoid causing trouble for herself.
This set of acupuncture techniques was something she had learned from books in her past life, for the sake of survival, of course.
Sometimes, killing required precision.
Over time, practice made perfect, and she could accurately locate a person’s fatal pressure points.
"I didn’t do anything!" Chen Xing spread her hands. "You saw for yourself. I’ve been sitting here the whole time!"
’The security camera?’
When she’d heard Situ Yuanyuan coming out, she had knocked out the camera before making her move.
Situ Yuanyuan was speechless. "...Do you take me for an idiot? He was terrified of you! You must have done something to him! You just wait. I’ll go check the security footage, and then I’ll know what you did!"
Unable to contain her curiosity, Situ Yuanyuan quickly left the interrogation room and went to the surveillance room.
She pulled up the footage and found that after she had left the room, the camera head had dropped, making it impossible to see what had happened.
She watched it back and forth repeatedly, but all she saw was the camera head coincidentally falling on its own.
As for the ten-odd seconds before she entered, no sound had been transmitted at all.
After that, there was only the sound of her opening the door and the sound of her own voice.
How could she have known that Chen Xing had first pressed his mute acupoint, making it impossible for him to cry out?
Since the surveillance footage revealed nothing, Situ Yuanyuan could only return to the interrogation room.
’Fine, if I can’t find anything, I won’t. It’s not like I planned on letting Chen Xing live anyway.’
’How dare she appear in public with my Brother Yiguo, and then hit me in front of everyone! But the most infuriating thing is that of the assassins I sent to kill Chen Xing, one died and his body was never even found.’
’I will not suffer this injustice.’
When she entered the interrogation room again, Situ Yuanyuan had more than a dozen soldiers behind her.
Although she couldn’t find any evidence, she wasn’t careless enough to venture in alone. "Chen Xing... that’s probably a fake name, right? I didn’t expect your identity to be so mysterious!"
After leaving the National Capital Hotel, she had sent people to investigate Chen Xing’s background, but they couldn’t find anything about her past.
It was as if her records had been specially sealed; they couldn’t find any information on this person, neither by name nor by photo.
As for Cao Guangrong suddenly acknowledging this "Cao Xuan" as his daughter... she felt it was necessary to check the results of a paternity test.
Chen Xing was also rather speechless about this result.
She actually hoped Situ Yuanyuan would be able to find something.
’At the very least, she should be able to find out whether this ’dad’ of mine is real or fake, right?’
