Chapter 105: Chapter 102: Protecting the Cub

It was just a fleeting glance, but Chen Xing still felt something was off.

The way Wu Qinglong looked at her wasn’t at all like he was looking at a stranger.

The thought made her a little uneasy.

’Is he also reborn?’

’That’s not very likely, is it?’

’If he were reborn too, wouldn’t this world be too chaotic?’

His current life was completely different from his last one. Even if her "butterfly effect" was potent, his changes were too drastic, weren’t they? It was as if his entire life had been swapped out.

’Or maybe he’s also from the Research Institute?’

’Is that why I seem familiar to him?’

In her past life, Wu Qinglong hadn’t shown the slightest hint of familiarity.

After that one glance, Wu Qinglong never looked at Chen Xing again.

His woman, however, would glance at her from time to time.

Her eyes were filled with jealousy; she must have noticed her man sneaking a peek at another woman.

Chen Xing didn’t think much of it.

The elevator soon stopped. The doors opened to a long, brightly lit corridor that stretched out of sight.

The neatly arranged doors resembled those of a ship’s cabin, giving the place a somewhat oppressive feel.

A soldier holding a notebook would walk to a door, call out a name, and that room would belong to the person who was called.

As Chen Xing passed by, she saw that the decor inside the rooms was similar to that of a residential building—not luxurious, and not large.

’Spending so much money to live in such a small place... If it were me, I wouldn’t do it.’

Not far down the hall, Cao Guangrong’s family was also assigned their new home.

Because they had a larger family, their place was a bit bigger, but it was still just a small two-bedroom apartment with a living room.

Chen Xing got a room to herself.

According to Cao Guangrong, he wanted her to be a bit more comfortable.

Chen Xing accepted without ceremony.

Since Cao Guangrong didn’t bring up the past, she didn’t press him for answers.

Once she was alone, Chen Xing didn’t stay idle.

She started organizing her dimensional space.

Recently, the poultry and livestock populations had boomed. Her space was now so full of them they were everywhere you looked.

The chicken and duck eggs were piling up into small mountains.

She had to find a way to deal with them.

’I wonder if Song Yiguo and the others will take pork, beef, and mutton...’

’When I get a chance to talk to them, I should be able to trade for some good stuff.’

She believed that this long into the apocalypse, livestock and poultry must have become luxury goods.

As long as she offered them, there would definitely be people willing to pay a high price.

Meng Hu was enjoying some rare downtime in the space.

Chen Xing always kept Meng Hu with her, but when she saw the crowd of people underground earlier, she had stored him in her space.

If Vice General Du and his men asked, she’d just say she was afraid the tiger would scare people, so she had it hide away.

Apparently, Vice General Du wasn’t that nosy; he didn’t even ask.

After organizing her space, Chen Xing took out some snacks like crackers and sunflower seeds to tide herself over.

Before long, Cao Guangrong knocked on the door. "Xuexue, the cafeteria is open! Time to go down for dinner!"

In the National Capital Safety Zone, they served two meals a day after the apocalypse.

The disaster had struck so suddenly that people hadn’t had time to eat dinner. Now, it was the middle of the night, and everyone was famished.

To calm everyone’s nerves, the Capital City’s leadership had made an exception and added an extra meal.

When Cao Guangrong arrived at the cafeteria with his family, it was already crowded.

Unable to find an empty table, Old Mrs. Cao and Old Man Cao told their son to get in line for food while the old couple shamelessly went to snatch some seats.

Dinner was, in fact, just simple toast with a few slices of vegetables.

"We spent so much money, and this is the crap they give us?" Some people were unhappy, pointing angrily at the bland food.

They were now paying a price thousands of times higher for food they wouldn’t have given a second glance before the apocalypse.

Cao Guangrong, however, wasn’t picky. He, along with his son and daughter-in-law, collected six servings.

Old Mrs. Cao, with her brazen attitude, had managed to grab a six-person table. "Xuexue, come sit here!"

’I’m still in the observation phase with the Cao Family, so... hmm... I’ll just pretend I didn’t see that.’

Chen Xing walked over and sat down. She picked up the toast but ultimately didn’t take a bite.

There was still sand on the vegetable leaves, and it looked like tiny insects. She really couldn’t muster the courage to eat it. "I’m not that hungry!"

"You have to eat something, even if you’re not hungry!" Cao Guangrong said worriedly, pushing the toast Chen Xing had set aside back toward her.

Chen Xing stood up, her action making it clear she wasn’t going to eat.

Cao Guangrong didn’t insist. "Then save this for your mother! Xuexue, if you’re tired, go on back and get some sleep!"

That was exactly what Chen Xing had in mind. She started walking toward the cafeteria entrance.

As she neared the entrance, she suddenly felt a rush of wind speeding past her.

She had always been fast. She dodged to the side just in time to hear a THUD.

A man who had just stood up next to her collapsed.

Blood slowly seeped from his chest, staining a patch of his clothes red.

"Someone’s been killed! Someone’s dead!" The crowd, slow to react, erupted into chaos.

Some dived under tables to save their own skin, while others rushed for the door.

Chen Xing, naturally, was not among them.

After dodging the bullet, she had already pinpointed its origin in the direction of the kitchen and gave chase.

Her attacker was a man. He wasn’t tall, but his movements were incredibly agile.

Realizing he had missed, he immediately bolted.

Who would have thought that just as he exited through the kitchen’s back door, before it had even closed, he would be struck by one of Chen Xing’s throwing knives.

Outside the kitchen was a dark, damp, narrow corridor that you had to go all the way around to get back to the cafeteria’s main entrance.

The assassin, struck by the knife, tried to flee despite the intense pain.

Chen Xing threw another knife without hesitation, this one hitting him straight in the heart and felling him.

He was wearing a chef’s uniform. Chen Xing walked over and yanked it open, revealing the clothes underneath.

They were the same as what her previous assassins had worn.

’Situ Yuanyuan!’

A cold glint appeared in Chen Xing’s eyes.

’I’ve been set up by Situ Yuanyuan!’

Sure enough, a group of soldiers poured out from the kitchen door. Seeing the dead man on the ground, they immediately surrounded Chen Xing. "Did you kill him?"

Chen Xing nodded. "He just tried to kill me, so I chased him out here!"

"Please come with us to make a statement. We won’t wrongly accuse anyone! With so many people in the hall to testify for you, it’s just a formality!" The soldier’s words were polite.

She’d be a fool to believe him.

’These people arrived way too quickly. They were clearly prepared for this.’

’But... whatever. If they want me to go, I’ll go.’

"Why are you arresting my daughter?" Cao Guangrong appeared just in time, blocking their path.

He looked every bit the fiercely protective father.

"No need to be nervous, sir. We’re just taking her back to make a statement. If you’re worried, you can come along!" the soldier said in a friendly tone.

But... their actions were anything but friendly.

Someone had already moved to restrain Cao Guangrong.

They didn’t grab Chen Xing, but they did threaten her with their guns.

"What are you doing? Why are you grabbing me? Why... Is there no law anymore..." Cao Guangrong shouted and struggled indignantly.

"What are you yelling about? We said it’s for a statement! Take them away!"

"This isn’t making a state—MMMPH..." The rest of Cao Guangrong’s words were muffled.

The soldiers’ words had been pleasant, but they showed Cao Guangrong no courtesy at all.

Chen Xing, on the other hand, was very cooperative.

She let the group of men lead her down the corridor.

They rounded the corridor, passed the cafeteria’s main entrance, and after about twenty meters, came to another door.

The group entered through this door.
