Chapter 1283: Chapter 671: Extra Story: All Is Love 2_2
"I know..."
Chester wanted to step forward and hold her, but Alice pushed him away, retreating. Tears finally disobeyed, spinning in her eyes. She widened her eyes forcefully to prevent them from falling, choking back, "I don’t regret visiting Becca today. Even if I may have hurt her, if doing so can ensure you’ll never meet her again, I’m willing to bear the label of being unreasonable."
The tears in her eyes stung his heart, and he said in a low voice, "Alice, I admit I’ve always been insensitive in matters of love. I didn’t know you harbored so much grievance..."
Alice shook her head vigorously, "No, you’re not insensitive to love. The charm and determination you showed in pursuing Becca is something every woman in the world desires. It’s just that you’ll never use such determination on me because I’ll never be the one you care about most..."
"It’s not like that..." Chester disregarded everything and stepped forward, tightly embracing Alice’s frail body, kissing the top of her head, "Baby, how many times do I need to say for you to understand that the person I care about most is you..."
Alice leaned against Chester, her tear-filled eyes losing focus. She croaked out, "I don’t know how to believe that you’ve loved only me from the beginning..."
"Let’s get married." Chester held her frail body, making her face him, "We’ll go register right now..."
Alice shook her head, "I won’t marry you now?"
"Why not?"
"Because, regarding your feelings for me, my heart has not yet been convinced."
"Then I’ll wait for you... I said I would wait until the day you nod and agree to marry me."
"But my heart is very confused and very tired now. I suddenly realize that being with you is exhausting, and I’m afraid I won’t be able to hold on until the end..."
"No..." Chester held Alice tightly in his arms, his voice hoarse, "I won’t allow you to say that. We will definitely grow old together."
She leaned into his embrace, her tears soaking his expensive shirt, and she sobbed, "Chester, I think we should separate for a while..."
Chester’s body trembled, slowly pushing her away, looking at her in disbelief.
Her tear-filled eyes stared unblinkingly at him, seriously saying, "I think I need some time to reflect on myself, and you need time to figure out your own heart... I believe, if heaven really favors us and believes we are meant to be, during our time apart, it will make us understand..."
Chester squinted his eyes, coldly said, "I said, I will never let you leave me again, no!!"
She sniffed, wiped the tears from her cheeks, and chuckled, "Don’t be like this... The impulsive and immature Alice now is not the Alice meant to spend a lifetime with you, and the Chester who always harbors ambivalent feelings for Becca is not the Chester I want to spend my life with. We need time alone to think carefully..."
The resolution in her eyes made him understand that she was being very rational now.
His face turned dark, his pitch-black eyes narrowing to slits, looking at her coldly, "I won’t let you leave."
Just the thought of her possibly leaving pained his heart.
He knew very well that his care for her surpassed everything.
He couldn’t live without her.
He embraced her again, whispering in her ear with a low, husky voice, "I can’t live without you..."
She hesitated for a few seconds, then hugged him back, but the embrace lasted only a few seconds before her calm voice came, "Give me some time to think it through on my own..."
That night, Chester stayed in the study, while Alice spent the night thinking in her room.
Chester’s decision remained that he wouldn’t let Alice leave, while Alice’s decision also remained that she needed some time alone to think in peace.
They both sent Rachel to school together, and on the way back, Chester broke the morning silence, "Are you still deciding to leave?"
Alice nodded calmly, "I think we need this time to calm down."
Chester, feeling frantic, ran his hand through his hair and shouted, "I’ve been calm from the beginning to the end!!"
She looked at his dark profile and softly said, "Just think of it as me going away to clear my mind."
Chester tightly grasped her hand, "You’re determined?"
"Yes."
Chester suddenly parked the car by the roadside, frantically pounding the steering wheel, gritting his teeth, "What on earth do you want me to do for you to change your mind about leaving?"
She rarely got angry, unless she was truly upset.
From the violent aura exuding from his whole body, it was clear she had truly upset him.
Realizing his behavior might have frightened her, he quickly added soothingly, "Let’s talk this over. Don’t mention going away alone to clear your head. I’ll put work aside and take Rachel along with us for a mind-clearing trip, okay?"
She knew he was doing everything he could to keep her, and she was touched by his efforts, but she had thought it through. Their issues weren’t something that could be resolved by him staying by her side 24/7.
He might not even realize that he still defended Becca multiple times when he came to pick her up and spoke today...
She believed she might be overly sensitive, but she couldn’t help feeling jealous whenever Becca’s name came up in his conversations. Yet, she never truly understood his heart.
Separation might be filled with reluctance and sadness now, but if it could bring peace at the moment and a future where they could be together without doubts, she didn’t think it was a wrong decision.
"Chester, listen to me... Though we have been so in love, have you ever felt that we haven’t yet reached the understanding that Becca and Howard Geoffrey, or Christine and Mr. Jones have?"
"You’re overthinking."
"No, I’m not. You’ve called me immature and unreasonable, throwing tantrums quite often."
"That’s only out of anger..."
"It wasn’t. It’s an acknowledgment that I haven’t reached your ideal partner’s standards... But I’m telling you now, even if we’re together in the future, my personality won’t change because I’m not Becca. I’ve been spoiled by my family since I was young. I can’t be as kind, generous, and graceful as her. I’m Alice—willful, with a tendency to throw tantrums and, at times, not very kind. You must think clearly—is someone like me really the partner you rationally want?"
"Alice..."
