Chapter 1265: Chapter 662: Side Story: The Big Bad Wolf Uses Old Tricks to Soothe the Little Bunny 1
Alice was just about to remind her daughter not to eat too many sweets when her daughter happily ran off.
Alice smiled and shook her head, then turned her gaze to search for Chester.
Not seeing Chester in the hall, Alice frowned in confusion.
She asked Christine Quinn and learned that Chester was taking a call in a quiet area of the side room, so Alice walked over.
She went to find him with a smile, not intending to let the small incident earlier affect their relationship.
When she reached the doorway of the side room, she saw him on the phone and decided to wait at the door.
Watching him from a distance, her eyes revealed a sense of infatuation.
While on the call, his expression was as serious as ever, with one hand in his pocket, looking composed. The black suit he wore added to his already striking figure.
"I want results, don’t talk to me about the process. If you can’t handle it, don’t bother seeing me again!!"
His sharp, cold voice startled Alice.
She thought he was discussing work with a subordinate and didn’t expect him to become so angry.
In her memory, he rarely got this angry, always handling matters with foresight and careful planning.
Coldly ending the call, he turned and saw her.
She smiled lightly, disguising the fear she felt from his earlier anger, and walked over as if nothing happened, "What happened? I heard you earlier, and you seemed very upset."
Chester put away his phone, wrapping an arm around her shoulder, his voice softened again, "It’s nothing... I didn’t scare you, did I?"
"No."
"Let’s go find Christine and the others for a chat."
"Okay."
They returned home when the dusk settled in.
Rachel, having played all afternoon, was already asleep in Alice’s arms.
On the way back to the villa, Chester drove while occasionally glancing at Alice sitting stiffly beside him. Her face was expressionless, perhaps a bit too pale, but it was cleverly concealed under her makeup, hardly noticeable unless one looked closely.
"Are you feeling unwell?"
Chester reached out to check the temperature on Alice’s forehead, only for Alice to suddenly stiffen and move away quickly.
Watching his hand fall empty, Chester couldn’t help but think of Alice’s behavior tonight.
She was fine during the first half, but seemed sullen in the latter half, smiling warmly at everyone else at the birthday party, but being cold towards him, like she had become a different person.
Chester pulled the car to the side of the road.
He examined Alice’s profile, trying to find a trace of what might be beneath her indifference.
"What’s going on? Did I do something wrong to upset my wife?" Chester took hold of Alice’s fair, smooth hand, gently stroking each finger.
Once again, Alice, as if burned, pulled her hand away quickly and clutched Rachel tightly.
"I’m fine, go ahead and drive!" Alice stared straight ahead, maintaining her cold demeanor.
Chester tightened his gaze, he certainly knew something was wrong with Alice, otherwise, she wouldn’t have changed so much. She had been sweet and joyful earlier in the party, instead of now, acting like a startled bird with him.
"What’s really going on? If something’s bothering you, just say it, don’t keep it to yourself, alright?" Chester urged, making no attempt to touch her again, merely observing the subtle changes on Alice’s face.
He caught a fleeting yet profound sadness in her eyes.
Alice smiled gently, "I’m fine."
She looked at Chester, calmly explaining her change, yet unable to control her distress, "You don’t need to comfort me, perhaps it’s you who needs more comforting!"
Was it because he didn’t see Becca, that’s why he got so angry with his subordinate tonight?
She knew the person on the phone was Keith Antony. He has always been as close as brothers with Keith, seldom showing such anger towards him.
The thought of Christine mentioning Becca, and him drinking in sorrow, felt like a knife slicing through her heart, it hurt immensely.
As clever as Chester was, he couldn’t fathom Alice’s thoughts at that moment.
His face darkened, "If there’s something wrong, just say it. Why use such a tone to make things tense between us?"
"I think there’s something we haven’t clearly communicated between us, Chester."
Chester? The disbelief and sudden surge of anger were evident on Chester’s face.
"What are you saying?" Chester, suppressing his anger, gripped Alice’s shoulders, shaking her uncontrollably, "What are you thinking? What haven’t we made clear? What do you mean by this unfamiliar tone?"
