Chapter 1171: Chapter 613: Extra Story: She Came to Settle the Score with Him (Part 1)
"I..."
"I saved you. Forget that you’re not grateful—you’re actually ’getting back at’ me... you really kicked hard."
Alice Robinson lowered her head, like a child who’d done something wrong.
Seeing her look like she was admitting fault, he eased his tone a little. "Claud Laurence called you many times yesterday. He seemed really anxious when he couldn’t reach you. If you don’t want him to worry, you should call him back as soon as you can."
"Mm... Claud... I’m fine... I went to a charity gala last night and didn’t get back until very late. As soon as I came home I crashed and fell asleep, I didn’t hear your calls. I’m sorry... yeah... I’ll be in touch."
The way Alice softly murmured into the phone to Claud Laurence fell completely into Chester Robinson’s line of sight.
She stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, hiding her real mood from Claud Laurence very well.
Chester watched her calmly, his eyes clouded with something indescribable.
When the call ended, Alice turned around and came face to face with Chester.
Chester looked at her, his gaze gentle.
Alice hesitated for a moment, then still walked up to him. "Thank you."
Chester deliberately pretended he hadn’t heard. "What did you say?"
Alice lifted her head, looking at Chester’s handsome face, and said seriously, "Thank you for saving me last night."
Chester looked deeply at her and said evenly, "I’m your brother. You don’t need to say such polite things to me."
She didn’t know why, but she was afraid to face that deep gaze of his.
She turned away, her back to Chester. "Please don’t say that, Mr. Robinson. We don’t know each other. You saved me, and I ought to be grateful."
In just a short while, she had recovered her composure again, keeping that distance between them.
Chester’s brows knit; he caught her wrist and turned her back around, his ink-dark pupils like obsidian as they looked straight into her eyes. "Are you planning to stay this distant from me for the rest of your life?"
Alice tried to pull free, but Chester held her tightly. Left with no choice, Alice gave up struggling and looked at him. "We’re just two strangers in this world to begin with."
A flash of anger flickered in Chester’s eyes. "Why do you have to deceive yourself like this?"
Alice’s face was utterly calm. "I’m not deceiving myself. My brother is already ’dead’. Mr. Robinson, you just happen to look like him, but ultimately, you’re not my brother."
Unable to swallow it, Chester yanked Alice toward him. "If you’ve got the guts, look me in the eye and say I’m not your brother."
Alice didn’t struggle. She looked at Chester, her gaze utterly still as she said, "Mr. Robinson, you’re not my brother. You just happen to look like him."
She said it very calmly, without a trace of inner struggle, which meant that facing him, she really had managed to become utterly unmoved.
Chester’s eyes wavered a little, because he’d never imagined Alice could speak with such cool, quiet detachment.
Alice took advantage of that split second when Chester was dazed to break free of him, quickly putting distance between them.
When Chester came back to himself, he fixed his gaze on Alice’s aloof, cold face. "Even if we had some unpleasantness in the past, we can still be friends... why do you have to push me away like this?"
"I’m sorry, Mr. Robinson. In business we can be partners, but I’m not good at socializing, so I don’t like making friends either."
Chester stared at her coldly, as if he wanted to see right through her, and his thin lips curved with a hint of a smile as he said, "You’re so determined to keep your distance from me because, in your heart, you still care about me, don’t you?"
"Mr. Robinson, I don’t know why you’d think that, but we’ve only met twice. How could I possibly have the sort of feelings you’re talking about?"
The hard lines of Chester’s face tightened, anger forming in his eyes, then replaced by a profound heaviness. "All right. Since you insist on drawing a clear line with me, I won’t force you... I just want to say one last thing: in my heart, you are still the person I care about the most. I see you as the closest person in my life. So I hope that when you run into troubles you can’t solve, you’ll come to me."
The person he cares about most?
She didn’t know why, but as he said this, her heart was laughing coldly, yet it wasn’t moved in the slightest.
Alice responded to Chester with a slight smile. "Mr. Robinson and I don’t know each other that well. As for your kindness, I’m afraid I’m not blessed enough to accept it..."
Once again, with that bland tone of hers, she pushed their relationship further and further away.
Chester let out a cold laugh and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window. "Suit yourself... but what I’ve said to you will always stand."
Alice remained unmoved and turned toward the door.
Yet just as Alice opened the door to leave, Chester spoke. "From now on, don’t take risks like that for the sake of the company’s interests. You’re very smart, but your ability to handle this dark, vicious society still isn’t enough. Don’t assume you can handle any crisis just because you think you’re capable. Protecting yourself is what you should do first."
After hearing him out, Alice paused for a second, but in the end she still chose to leave.
Once Alice was gone, Chester stood at the window for a long time, a very deep emotion in his eyes.
Leaving the hotel, Alice hailed a cab and got in.
She pressed a hand to her forehead and leaned against the seatback, her gaze a little unfocused.
She was thinking about the last thing he’d said to her...
They hadn’t been in touch for over a year. She’d never thought that he actually still cared about her.
It was a pity that in the past she might have minded that kind of concern. Now, she felt absolutely nothing.
Was he still pitying her? But the truth was, she was doing very well... without him, she really was fine. She didn’t need his pity.
Her phone rang just then.
Alice pressed the answer key.
Andie’s anxious voice came through. "Miss Robinson... thank goodness, you finally picked up. I’ve been calling you all night, looking for you all night, I was worried sick..."
"I’m sorry, Andie, for making you worry. There was a small incident last night... I’m fine."
"We couldn’t find you at all last night. I almost called the police. Luckily, just before dawn, Mr. Robinson’s secretary called me to say you were with Mr. Robinson. Only then did I relax."
"Mm... I’m fine."
"Miss Robinson, how did you end up with Mr. Robinson last night?"
