The Covenant Hound bit rules into reality. Its first attack missed Aren's throat. The second did not need to hit him.

NO RETREAT.

Gold letters struck the floor.

The space behind Aren hardened.

Hunter's Step failed to move backward.

He redirected sideways.

The hound anticipated.

A claw made from the words SUBJECT SHALL struck Worldspine.

The spear screamed.

Aren had no other word for the sound.

Worldspine vibrated through his bones.

[MANDATE-DERIVED AUTHORITY CONTACT.]

[Weapon integrity: 3.81%]

It had lost part of Gerran's repair in one hit.

"Wonderful."

The others fought the command to kneel. Seris forced herself upright one inch at a time. Gold Essence flickered around her sword but could not fully form.

"Aren," she said through clenched teeth. "Break the command."

"Working on it."

He attacked.

The hound's body was not solid in a normal sense. It became solid only when a rule needed teeth.

Aren tested that twice.

The first thrust passed through golden letters. The second he delayed until the Hound committed to biting. Worldspine struck a jaw that suddenly had weight.

Silver sparks exploded.

The creature recoiled.

The Codex updated.

[TACTICAL PROPERTY DISCOVERED: interaction creates temporary materialization window.]

That was a reward too.

Information could kill things.

"Seris! Make it commit!"

She was still on one knee, but she understood. Gold Essence flared around her sword hand in deliberate defiance. The Hound snapped toward the brighter authority.

Aren intercepted the bite.

Tavian, still pinned by KNEEL, slammed one fist sideways into the creature's materialized foreleg.

Bone would have broken.

Script shattered instead.

The Hound screamed a legal clause. Aren decided that was worse than an animal sound. Worldspine passed through golden script and tore several words apart.

The wound immediately rewrote itself.

[REGENERATION SOURCE: active covenant layer.]

Aren used Grave Sense.

Nothing.

The guardian had no weight until it chose interaction. He needed another way to perceive it. The fourth Imprint slot waited empty.

The Hound possessed something useful.

Record required defeat first.

Annoying system design.

The guardian spoke.

WEAPON UNAUTHORIZED.

Then it learned a worse command.

ALLY INTERFERENCE PROHIBITED.

Gold circles appeared beneath Seris, Tavian, Nara, Lysette, and Rhea. Each circle isolated its occupant from the others. Sound crossed. Light crossed. Help did not. Seris's sword struck the boundary and rebounded. Tavian punched his. The circle declared the force unauthorized and returned it into his shoulder.

"I strongly dislike law!"

Aren attacked the Hound alone.

It wanted that.

The creature's movements changed the instant the party became separated. Faster. More direct. No need to protect command anchors from multiple threats.

Aren gave it three exchanges.

On the fourth he let the Hound bite Worldspine.

The jaws materialized.

Instead of pulling away, Aren drove forward. Chosen purpose, before the technique had a name. The spear shaft pinned the Hound's mouth open.

"Nara! Your circle is a rule, not a wall!"

"Helpful distinction!"

"Make it misunderstand what counts as interference!"

Nara stared at her bottles.

Then threw one straight upward.

It struck the ceiling, shattered, and rained solvent across every circle. She had not targeted an ally.

The environment had.

The law hesitated.

Lysette used that heartbeat to fold the solvent rainfall sideways. Rhea attached black script to droplets already in motion.

Seris's circle cracked.

Tavian hit his again.

This time it broke outward.

[HOSTILE LAW INTERPRETATION EXPLOITED.]

[Party tactical adaptation recognized.]

Aren laughed once.

The Hound's jaws tightened.

"You really chose the wrong people to regulate."

Worldspine became heavy.

Not physically.

The idea of Aren being allowed to lift it was revoked.

His arms dropped.

Sovereign Resonance pulsed.

Aren chose the relationship.

Worldspine was his weapon because he had chosen to carry it and the weapon had chosen not to leave. The Hound did not receive a vote.

The command cracked.

Aren lifted the spear.

[PRINCIPLE RESISTANCE SUCCESSFUL.]

The Hound paused.

Aren smiled.

"New trick."

He attacked again.

This time he did not aim at its body.

He watched the commands.

NO RETREAT remained connected to the floor behind him by a thin gold line. KNEEL connected to Seris, Tavian, Nara, Lysette, and Rhea. He could see the relationship now that Resonance taught him what to look for.

Not fully.

Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on NovelPhoenix. Report any occurrences elsewhere.

An intuition.

Worldspine made it clearer.

He struck the line leading to Seris.

Silver flashed.

The line snapped.

Seris stood.

Her sword ignited.

"That," she said, "was irritating."

She cut the hound in half.

It rewrote itself.

But slower.

"Tavian next!" Aren shouted.

He severed another line.

Tavian stood and immediately punched the guardian. His stone Essence returned all at once. The hound flew through a pew.

"Administrative lifting!"

Nara, still kneeling, shouted, "That joke is dead!"

Aren cut her line.

She stood and threw a bottle. Green liquid splashed across the guardian.

The gold script began dissolving.

Rhea stared.

"What is that?"

"Ink solvent."

"That is not ink."

"It doesn't know that."

Aren liked Nara more every day.

Lysette's line broke next.

The Hound changed targets.

It had learned Aren was the only person ignoring its broad commands.

So it stopped speaking broadly.

SERIS AUREL: DISARM.

Her sword hand opened against her will.

The weapon fell.

Seris caught it with her left before it hit stone.

The command immediately changed.

SERIS AUREL: LEFT HAND INVALID.

Her fingers went numb.

The sword dropped.

Aren's anger rose.

The Hound was getting specific.

That made it stronger.

It also made each command narrower.

"Seris! The blank!"

She understood.

The Absolution Blank from the Penitents flashed in her palm. The metal strip absorbed the final word of the command.

INVALID vanished.

Her hand closed around the sword.

One-use loot.

Gone.

Worth it.

She attacked with enough force to split three pews behind the Hound. The construct rewrote its shoulder but lost a line of KNEEL in the process.

Aren saw the pattern.

Every new rule consumed old authority.

"Make it talk!"

Tavian shouted, "You are ugly!"

The Hound ignored him.

"Not like that!"

Nara threw a bottle at its face.

The guardian opened its mouth.

ALCHEMICAL WEAPON PROHIBITED.

A section of KNEEL faded.

Tavian forced one knee up.

Rhea deliberately stepped toward the forbidden altar.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS PROHIBITED.

Another section faded.

Lysette folded the Hound's tail through the central pit.

SPATIAL ALTERATION PROHIBITED.

The construct's torso became visibly thinner.

Aren laughed.

"It has a budget."

Rhea's eyes widened. "Of course it does. It is made from discarded authority, not infinite authority." Seris smiled in a way Aren recognized from sparring.

Everyone misbehaved at once.

The Hound became a storm of increasingly specific prohibitions.

DO NOT MOVE.

DO NOT SPEAK.

DO NOT ALTER.

DO NOT THROW THAT.

Tavian looked delighted by the last one. Each command weakened the body that enforced it. The guardian realized the trap too late.

Its golden ribs became visible.

Aren pointed Worldspine at the center.

"Now we kill the bureaucracy."

Her rings filled the room.

She folded the space around the Hound. For three seconds, every attempt it made to rewrite damaged words returned to the same broken position.

"Now!"

Seris struck.

Tavian struck.

Rhea's black script pinned commands to the floor. Aren drove Worldspine into the center of the creature.

Silver light spread.

For one instant he saw the structure beneath it.

Thousands of discarded orders.

Curfews.

Confiscations.

Oaths.

Prohibitions.

Execution warrants.

Commands written by priests, emperors, judges, and divine authorities across centuries, all thrown into the lower facility after expiration. The Hound had grown from obedience no longer needed but never truly destroyed.

Aren felt disgust.

Power left residue.

Even after the person giving orders forgot.

Worldspine pushed deeper.

The guardian shattered.

Gold words filled the air like burning leaves.

[ELITE AUTHORITY CONSTRUCT DEFEATED.]

[ORIGIN ACQUIRED: 19.0]

[ORIGIN TOTAL: 42.8]

[RECORD OPPORTUNITIES:]

LAW SIGHT - Epic

COMMAND BITE - Rare

COVENANT REGENERATION - Epic The Record options hovered while the last gold fragments burned around him. Command Bite tempted Aren for half a second. A technique that could impose a simple command would be useful. Terrifyingly useful. The Codex expanded the description when he focused.

[COMMAND BITE - Rare]

Impose a short behavioral directive through established authority differential. Effectiveness increases where target already recognizes host's right to command. Aren felt something cold settle in his stomach.

Recognizes host's right to command.

It was almost exactly the sort of power Dominion might become.

He dismissed it.

Covenant Regeneration was equally powerful, but its structure rebuilt itself by drawing from an external law network. Aren did not possess one, and he did not want to create a dependency he did not understand.

Law Sight remained.

Perception.

Not obedience. Not ownership.

The ability to see the thing he might someday need to refuse. That choice felt more important than its rarity.

Aren did not hesitate.

"Record Law Sight."

The Codex unfolded the pattern.

Pain crossed his eyes.

For one heartbeat the world became threads. Every relationship of active authority in the room appeared as lines and knots.

Church seals.

Formation permissions.

Seris's House protection mark.

Tavian's sect oath.

Nara's alchemical guild license.

Rhea had so many hidden relationships Aren nearly became dizzy.

[IMPRINT ACQUIRED: LAW SIGHT - EPIC]

The remaining Record options collapsed.

Then a second reward window appeared.

[TACTICAL COMPLETION BONUS]

Conditions fulfilled:

- severed five active command relationships

- defeated construct while one party member remained under hostile law

- rejected coercive Record in favor of perceptive Record

[Choose one manifested spoil.]

COVENANT FANG - Rare weapon catalyst OBSOLETE SEAL - Rare formation key

KNEEL-SHARD - Epic authority-analysis material

Aren looked at Nara.

She pointed at the third before he asked.

"Obviously."

Rhea said, "Seal." Lysette said, "Seal." Seris looked at Aren. "Which one makes the next fight less likely to control us?"

Aren selected the KNEEL-SHARD.

Black-gold crystal formed in his palm with the word KNEEL trapped inside it, frozen mid-command.

[KNEEL-SHARD - Epic]

Contains a stable coercive-law pattern. May be studied to improve resistance, counter-binding alchemy, or future Principle alignment. Nara smiled in a way that made Tavian take one step away from her.

"Excellent."

Aren put the shard in her hands.

"Do not test it on him."

"I wasn't going to."

Tavian narrowed his eyes.

"That answer was too fast."

[Capacity: 4/4]

LAW SIGHT

Passive / Active Imprint

Perceives active authority structures, bindings, covenants, and law-layer relationships within current comprehension threshold.

[WARNING: perception does not imply resistance.]

"Good warning."

Nobody moved for almost a minute after the Covenant Hound died. Not because they were afraid it would return. Because the absence of its commands felt strange. Tavian lay on his back staring at the ceiling.

"I would like to formally request that the next guardian use claws."

Nara sat beside him and began checking his ribs.

"You complained about claws in Ruin Forty-Seven K."

"I have matured."

Seris was still kneeling where KNEEL had forced her down.

Aren crouched beside her.

"Can you stand?"

"Physically."

He understood the distinction.

Law Sight had turned the room into a web of gold relationships. Even with the Hound destroyed, faint command residue clung to Seris's knees, Tavian's sect oath, Nara's guild marks, and the visitor seals they had used to enter the Cathedral. Aren had never realized how many systems touched a person without being visible. The new Imprint made the world uglier.

It also made it honest.

"Hold still."

He focused on the residue around Seris.

The Codex warned:

[Perception does not grant modification authority.]

"I know."

Seris raised an eyebrow.

"It told you not to do something."

"It is developing excellent instincts."

Instead of cutting the residue, Aren described what he saw. Nara used the KNEEL-Shard as a reference and mixed a thin counteragent from silver salt, bitterroot, and something Tavian insisted smelled like dead socks. She painted the mixture across Seris's boots.

The gold residue loosened.

Not destroyed.

Disengaged.

[Counter-binding method observed.]

[Party-developed resistance technique archived as knowledge, not Imprint.]

Nara looked pleased.

"Write that down."

"The Codex already did."

"I meant for people without forbidden Systems."

Good point.

Lysette copied the mixture formula while Rhea sketched the Hound's broken command geometry.

Aren realized something important.

The Codex could make him powerful. A team could make discoveries that survived him. He looked at the rewards they had earned.

Law Sight.

KNEEL-Shard.

Worldspine restoration.

And now a counter-binding technique Nara could potentially reproduce for other people. The best loot from the fight might be the thing Aren did not keep.

Tavian finally sat up.

"Are we ready to continue into the secret child-experiment facility?"

Silence.

"When I say it aloud, our evening sounds poorly planned."

Rhea pointed toward the newly opened stair.

"It gets worse below."

Tavian sighed.

"Of course it does."

Aren helped Seris stand.

Her hand remained in his a moment longer than necessary.

"You chose Law Sight," she said.

"Yes."

"Not the command ability."

"Yes."

"Good."

One word.

More rewarding than an Epic label.

They descended.

A pile of material remained where the Hound died. Not loot in the normal sense. A knot of hardened gold-black script.

The Codex analyzed.

[COVENANT RESIDUE - EPIC CATALYST]

[Worldspine compatible.]

Aren held it near the spear.

Worldspine pulled.

The residue dissolved into silver-gold dust.

The broken shaft drank it.

[Integrity: 4.37%]

Aren stared.

More than half a percent from one guardian.

Gerran would probably become emotional.

The statues around them went dark.

The far altar split.

A stair appeared.

Rhea recovered first.

"That," she said, "is new."

Tavian looked at her.

"You have said that too many times tonight."

They descended.

Law Sight transformed the old facility. Aren saw channels of authority buried beneath walls. Most were dead. Some still carried faint power toward the Cathedral above. One line ran in the opposite direction.

Down.

Toward the Imperial Observatory district.

Rhea stopped before a black metal door.

No handle.

No keyhole.

Aren's black key became hot.

"This is it," she said.

"The Palimpsest archive?"

"Its outer transit vault."

Aren removed the key.

The divided circle on its head aligned with a matching depression in the door. Nine broken strokes appeared around it. Lysette whispered, "That's not a symbol."

Aren looked at her.

She had reached the same conclusion as Elara.

"What is it?"

Lysette traced the geometry in the air.

"A network diagram. Nine points around one interior space. But the lines are broken because the connections aren't spatial."

Above is not up.

A door does not need distance if the destination is a relationship.

Aren inserted the key.

The door did not open forward.

The world turned sideways.

A corridor appeared where distance had not existed. At its end, black letters were carved into white stone. The Covenant Hound's reward screen did not open immediately. First the Cathedral evaluated the room.

Every kneeling command.

Every broken seal.

Every person who had resisted.

[DEPTH III BOSS CLEAR.]

[Performance evaluation.]

[Objectives:]

- survive authority suppression: COMPLETE

- disable reconstruction source before final defeat: COMPLETE

- preserve allied oaths from collateral severance: COMPLETE

- accept no coercive Record: COMPLETE

[Grade: S.]

Tavian stared at Aren.

"What?"

Aren repeated the grade.

Tavian raised both fists.

"We are excellent at bureaucracy."

The Record options appeared.

LAW SIGHT.

COMMAND BITE.

COVENANT REGENERATION.

Aren chose Law Sight for the reason that mattered.

It let him see.

Not command.

Not consume.

See.

Then the manifested spoil choices appeared.

He took the KNEEL-SHARD.

Not the strongest immediate catalyst.

The one that preserved authority geometry for analysis.

Rhea looked proud.

"You're becoming an archivist."

"Insult."

"Promotion."

When Law Sight opened for the first time, the entire Cathedral changed. What had looked like stone and gold became relationships.

Oaths.

Permissions.

Maintenance rights.

Claim chains.

And beneath them all, one black route descending into Project Palimpsest. The dungeon had paid out a new sense. The new sense revealed the next dungeon. Aren suspected the Codex found that funny.

PROJECT PALIMPSEST.

Below them:

CASE ZERO - ACCESS RESTRICTED.

Aren stepped through.

He had spent his entire life wondering why he had been born Unwritten. For the first time, he was entering a place built by people who had asked the same question before he existed.
