Codex of the Unwritten
THE CATHEDRAL BELOW
The oldest part of the Cathedral of Nine Eyes was not a cathedral.
It was a sewer.
Rhea Sorn seemed proud of this.
"Empires build upward. Secrets survive downward."
Nara stared at the black water beside the walkway.
"Your secrets smell terrible."
"History is rarely ventilated."
Aren followed them beneath an arch too low for Tavian.
Tavian hit his head.
"I blame the Church."
"The arch predates the Church," Rhea said.
"Then I blame history."
Seris should not have been there. Caedmon had explained this at length. Seris had listened respectfully, agreed that breaking into restricted catacombs beneath the capital's central cathedral was politically catastrophic, and packed a dark cloak. Caedmon had then told Aren, "If she gets arrested, I will blame you because blaming her has never improved anything."
Aren considered this unfair.
Mirelle gave them sandwiches.
Lysette had not been invited.
She found them anyway.
"Your margin door creates a thirteen-point spatial distortion," she said when she stepped from a side tunnel.
Rhea drew a knife.
Lysette looked at it.
"That seems dramatic."
"Who are you?"
"Lysette Harrow. Starfall Pavilion."
"Why are you here?"
"Spatial distortion. I said that."
Rhea looked at Aren.
"You attract them."
Seris said, "I already told him."
Aren sighed.
"Can she help?"
Rhea considered killing the question.
Then nodded reluctantly.
"If she gets us caught, I am leaving her."
Lysette looked delighted.
They descended another level.
The sewer ended at a wall of white stone. Before Rhea could open it, the water behind them rose.
Not from current.
From words.
Old prohibitions surfaced in the black water like drowned bodies.
NO ENTRY.
NO RETURN.
NO APPEAL.
Each phrase became a chain of liquid gold and whipped toward the group.
Lysette folded the first aside.
It reappeared behind her because the tunnel considered turning around a form of return.
"That's annoying," she said.
Tavian took the chain across both forearms. Stone Essence flared and dimmed under the old command. Aren cut the physical link with Worldspine. The words remained attached to Tavian. Law Sight showed the real anchor: not his wrists, but the relationship between his presence and the forbidden door ahead.
"Nobody move toward the wall!"
Everyone stopped.
The chains loosened.
Rhea understood. "The defense only exists relative to attempted entry." Nara threw an empty bottle past the group, away from the door. The words NO ENTRY ignored it.
Aren smiled.
"Then we aren't entering."
He faced the opposite direction.
Unseen Thread suppressed the relevance between their movement and the hidden wall while Lysette folded the corridor so walking away shortened the distance to the door. They retreated directly through the barrier. The golden chains collapsed in confusion.

[No Record available.]
Tavian stared at the wall now behind him.
"We escaped by walking into it backward."
Lysette looked pleased. "Geometry is a personality." Seris said, "Do not start." Nine circles were carved into it. Church architecture had been built over something older.
Aren recognized the underlying script.
Same family as Ruin 47-K.
Rhea touched three black characters to the stone.
"The public Cathedral is four hundred years old. The lower foundation is at least three thousand."
"What was here?" Seris asked.
"No surviving record."
Aren looked at the carvings.
Unseen Thread let him suppress the relationship between his presence and the wall's active Mandate sensors.
The nine circles dimmed.
Rhea glanced over.
"Improved."
"Expensive organs."
"Fair."
Lysette placed crystal rings around the wall.
Space folded.
A seam appeared.
Behind it waited a stair descending beneath the river.
The air grew cold.
At the bottom stood a cathedral turned inside out. Pillars descended from the ceiling into darkness. Stone pews faced away from a central altar. Statues of nine faceless figures had been carved with their backs to worshippers.
Something moved between those pillars.
Not the Hound.
Smaller things.
Nine human silhouettes knelt facing the wrong direction, each made from layers of translucent script.
Rhea stopped.
"Those are new too."
Tavian groaned. "Your map is becoming a list of lies."
The silhouettes rose.
The Codex analyzed.
[DISCARDED PENITENT]
[Authority construct / low Resonant equivalent]
[Origin source: expired confessions and revoked absolutions]
Each construct wore a different sentence across its face.
I REPENT.
I CONFESS.
I SUBMIT.
One had nothing written at all.
That one moved first.
It crossed the distance in silence and drove a palm toward Aren's forehead.
Seris intercepted with her sword.
The construct flowed around the blade and tried to attach the word CONFESS to her wrist.
"Don't let them finish a sentence!" Rhea shouted.
Black script snapped from her fingers and cut the word in half.
Aren understood the mechanic.
The constructs were weak until they completed a relationship.
Repent for what?
Confess to whom?
Submit under whose authority?
He attacked the blank one.
It tried to write GUILTY across Worldspine. Aren rotated the shaft before the final letter formed.
The incomplete word shattered.
He drove the broken spearpoint through the construct's chest.

[Origin acquired: 2.4]
[Record opportunity: COMPULSIVE CONFESSION - Rare]
Decline.
Immediately.
Tavian punched another construct before it completed SUBMIT. Nara discovered that her ink solvent damaged the words faster than the bodies. Lysette folded two sentences so they attempted to finish on each other. Both constructs collapsed under contradictory guilt. By the time the ninth Penitent fell, Aren had gained another 5.7 Origin and absolutely no desire to Record anything they offered.
One drop remained.
A pale strip of metal bearing a sentence that had been erased from both sides.
[ABSOLUTION BLANK - Rare]
[May cancel one low-grade imposed designation if applied before authority finalizes. Single use.]
Aren gave it to Seris.
"Why me?"
"Because if something labels you in a fight, you will try to cut the concept with a sword."
"That could work."
"This works first."
She accepted it reluctantly.
The team moved deeper.
Then every statue in the cathedral turned its head. Nara whispered, "I hate this."
Aren agreed.
The Codex reacted.
[PRE-COVENANT MANDATE FACILITY]
Aren took three more steps and nearly lost his right hand. A strip of dead gold script peeled from the nearest pew and snapped around his wrist.
CORRECTIVE HOLD.
The command had no living caster. No god behind it. It was residue—an old instruction that had survived because nobody had ever told it to stop. Sovereign Resonance resisted the identity inside the command, but not the physical force.
Aren's wrist slammed against stone.
Seris cut the strip.
It split into six smaller commands. Tavian swore. "Why does cutting things make more things?"
"Bad administration," Aren said.
Rhea's black script pinned two fragments. Lysette folded another into a loop where it kept trying to restrain itself. Nara threw a clear liquid across the final strips.
The words blistered.
"Ink solvent?" Aren asked.
"Improved formula."
"This still isn't ink."
"It has poor self-esteem."
The residue collapsed into flakes.
The Codex displayed:
[MINOR AUTHORITY CONSTRUCT DISPELLED.]
[Origin acquired: 1.8]
[ORIGIN TOTAL: 23.8]
[Material drop: CORRECTION FLAKE - Uncommon]
Aren picked up one shard with a cloth.
[Correction Flake]
A hardened fragment of obsolete authority. Useful in law-analysis, anti-binding alchemy, or low-grade Sovereign Arm restoration.
Worldspine hummed.
Aren did not feed it immediately.
Nara held out a vial.
"Mine."
"You heard the weapon hum."
"The weapon does not formulate antidotes."
"Neither do I."
"Exactly."
Aren gave her the flake.
Combat rewards did not always need to belong to him to make his party stronger.
The thought felt obvious.
The Codex quietly marked it anyway.
[Chosen-network utility behavior observed.]
[Function: discarded authority containment.]
"Discarded authority?"
Rhea looked at him.
"What?"
Aren told them.
Her posture changed.
"That is not what our maps say."
"What do they say?"
"Archive transit."
Lysette crouched beside the floor.
"Both can be true."
She brushed dust from a carved channel.
"Something was transported through here. Something the upper city wanted forgotten."
Tavian pointed at the nearest statue.
"Why are those facing away?"
Aren used Grave Sense.
Nothing moved.
Before the stone moved, Aren noticed something through Unseen Thread. The lower cathedral was not listening for sound.
It was listening for relationships.
Each faceless statue carried a bundle of invisible questions.
Who authorized you?
Who claims you?
What institution names your purpose?
Rhea's stolen Church seal had once answered those questions. Now it had become invalid. Lysette crouched beside one of the backward-facing pews and traced a groove with her fingertip.
"This wasn't built for worship."
Seris looked around. "Then what?"
"Processing."
Nara grimaced. "People?"
"Authority. Maybe both."
Aren focused on a faded inscription beneath the nearest seat.
[TRANSLATION CONFIDENCE: 61%]
RENDER THAT WHICH NO LONGER SERVES INTO FORM THAT MAY SERVE AGAIN.
He read it aloud.
Tavian stared at the words.
"That is an aggressively unpleasant sentence."
Rhea's humor vanished. "The Scripture thought these tunnels transported censored archives."
"Maybe the archives weren't books," Aren said.
Small channels ran from every pew toward the central pit. Nara scraped residue from one with a glass tool.
"Essence salts. Old. Soul-adjacent."
Seris's grip tightened on her sword.
"People sat here."
"Probably."
Aren imagined expired oaths, revoked titles, condemned techniques—and perhaps cultivators whose identities no longer fit the Covenant—being brought beneath the city and reduced into reusable authority.
Power left residue.
The idea arrived before he understood why it mattered. Darius had warned him about what power taught a person they had the right to do. This place was what happened when an institution asked that question for centuries and stopped listening to the answer. Lysette looked toward the central pit.
"Something is drawing active authority from above. Very slowly."
"The Cathedral?" Seris asked.
"Or the city."
Rhea went still.
"There are six million people in Vhal Teren."
Nobody joked after that.
Then every statue turned its head.
Tavian sighed.
"I knew asking was a mistake."
Gold light filled empty eye sockets. A voice came from all nine.
STATE COVENANT AUTHORITY.
Rhea stepped back.
"We normally use a stolen Church seal."
"Normally?"
"It worked six months ago."
She raised a black disk.
The statues looked at it.
INVALID.
The disk cracked.
Lucan's audit.
Church authorizations had probably changed after the divine event. The cathedral doors behind them slammed shut. Tavian raised stone from the floor.
The floor refused.
"Again?"
Nara drew three bottles.
Seris's sword glowed.
Lysette's rings spread.
The statues spoke.
UNAUTHORIZED IDENTITY.
SUBMIT FOR CORRECTION.
Aren's Resonance tightened.
"No."
The nine heads turned toward him.
UNREGISTERED.
Aren raised Worldspine.
"Also no."
The floor opened.
Something climbed out.
It looked like a hound built from golden writing.
No flesh.
No bone.
Commands formed its legs.
Prohibitions made teeth.
The Codex analyzed.
[LAWBOUND GUARDIAN]
[Designation: COVENANT HOUND]
[Equivalent Realm: HIGH RESONANT]
[Authority composition: discarded edicts / correction mandates]
[Threat: EXTREME]
Rhea stared.
"That wasn't here last time."
Aren set his feet.
"Your tours are terrible."
The hound opened its mouth.
KNEEL.
The command hit everyone except Aren. Seris dropped to one knee with a curse. Tavian slammed both hands against the floor, fighting the order.
Nara's bottles fell.
Lysette's rings crashed.
Rhea remained half-standing through black script.
Aren alone stayed upright.
The hound looked at him.
Aren looked back.
"I've had this conversation."
It charged.
The sewer beneath the Cathedral became holy architecture without warning. One step smelled like old water and rust. The next landed on white marble. Tavian stopped with one boot still over the boundary.
"I prefer transitions that announce themselves."
Rhea held up a hand.
Nine alcoves lined the corridor ahead. Each contained a kneeling figure carved from pale stone. Their mouths had been removed.
Not damaged.
Designed without them.
Gold script crossed every throat.
Lysette Harrow crouched beside the threshold.
"Formation."
"Obviously," Rhea said.
"No. The statues are not the formation. We are."
Aren looked at her.
Lysette pointed to black tiles spaced along the floor.
"Nine positions. The corridor reads whoever occupies them."
Tavian stepped backward.
"I withdraw my participation."
A gold line ignited beneath his boot.
Too late.
The statues stood.
All nine moved at once.
No mouths.
No sound.
The command arrived inside Aren's bones anyway.
CONFESS.
His Sovereign Vessel tightened.
The Codex translated.
[Low-grade covenant command.]
[Host: invalid registration target.]
[Party members affected through Cathedral visitor marks.]
Seris froze.
Her sword lowered.
A gold sentence appeared above her.
CONFESS WHAT YOU HIDE.
Tavian's eyes widened.
"I once told Maelin the south practice wall collapsed because of rain."
Maelin was not present.
Aren still felt certain she would somehow learn.
Nara clenched her jaw.
"I poisoned a guild examiner."
Tavian looked at her.
"Recently?"
"He recovered."
"That was not my question."
The statues attacked while the command worked.
Cruel design.
Confession occupied attention while physical force punished hesitation.
Aren blocked a stone staff.
Another statue moved behind him.
Grave Sense found it through the marble and he ducked. Seris was still resisting the command.
Her face had gone pale.
Aren stepped between her and the next strike.
"Don't answer it."
She looked at him through gold pressure.
"Easy for you."
True.
That mattered.
His immunity could become blindness if he forgot what commands felt like to everyone else. Aren stopped treating the statues as enemies.
He looked at the floor.
Nine tiles.
Nine people required to complete the formation.
There were six of them.
The remaining three positions were occupied by projected silhouettes.
Ghost registrations.
"Rhea. Those empty positions."
She saw them.
"Stored identities."
"Break one."
"That might trigger the alarm."
A stone staff nearly removed Tavian's ear.
"The statues are already the alarm."
Rhea threw three strips of black paper. They stuck to one projected silhouette.
The figure flickered.
The confession command weakened.
Seris inhaled sharply.
Aren attacked the nearest statue—not the body, but the gold writing around its throat.
Worldspine touched the command structure.
Silver light crossed gold.
The throat script broke.
The statue collapsed.
The other eight became stronger.
Lysette swore.
"Shared load! Every broken node redistributes power."
Aren smiled despite himself.
"Good."
Tavian stared.
"Your definition of good is broken."
"It means the formation has to keep relationships balanced."
He pointed to the ghost positions.
"We don't destroy nodes. We make it unable to decide who belongs where."
Veil Thread.
Aren wrapped his presence.
The formation already struggled to classify him. He moved across three tiles in succession, touching each just long enough to create incomplete registration.
Gold lines crossed.
The statues hesitated.
Lysette understood and stepped onto a fourth tile while folding the spatial relationship between two others. Rhea overlaid a false visitor mark on Tavian. Nara threw a vial that stained one tile with Seris's House signature.
The corridor tried to count.
Six people.
Nine positions.
Thirteen apparent identities.
One Unwritten.
The system collapsed into administrative despair.
Every statue froze.
Tavian raised his hammer.
"Now?"
"Now."
They broke the throat scripts simultaneously.
Nine statues fell.
The gold pressure vanished.
The Codex opened.
[CATHEDRAL CONFESSION ARRAY DISABLED.]
[No entity defeat reward.]
[Formation insight acquired: coercive systems become unstable when identity relationships cannot be resolved consistently.]
Aren liked the reward more than he expected.
The lesson was portable.
The next time a law tried to define people cleanly enough to control them, confusion itself might become a weapon.
Tavian looked at Nara.
"You poisoned an examiner?"
"He deserved diarrhea."
"That became significantly less dramatic."
Seris had not spoken.
Aren waited until the others moved ahead.
"You okay?"
She nodded once.
"It asked for something I did not want to say in front of strangers."
"You don't have to tell me."
Her eyes met his.
Something softened.
"I know."
That answer felt more important than if she had confessed. Ahead, Rhea stopped at the next arch.
"We have company."
A growl rolled through the lower Cathedral. Gold writing appeared across the floor.
SUBJECTS WILL KNEEL.
Tavian looked at Aren.
"I preferred the statues."
The Covenant Hound stepped from the dark. The Hound crossed half the cathedral before Aren finished inhaling. He had fought monsters that hunted flesh.
This thing hunted permission.
Its jaws closed on the space where his throat had been and the stone behind him lit with a new sentence.
SUBJECT MAY NOT EVADE CORRECTION.
Hunter's Step triggered.
The command grabbed the movement itself. Aren's body moved three paces and snapped back one.
Pain tore through his hip.
The Hound turned.
Aren smiled without humor.
"Fine. We do this the difficult way."
Rhea stopped at the final sewer gate and held up three fingers.
"Depth Three."
Aren looked at the Cathedral wall.
"We entered through a drain."
"Architecture has no dignity."
The Scartrace Compass displayed three nested signatures beneath the Cathedral.
[WORLDSCAR classification: ARTIFICIAL / authority-fed.]
[Grade: III.]
[Depth I: municipal substrate.]
[Depth II: Covenant maintenance.]
[Depth III: restricted research interface.]
Tavian frowned.
"So the Church built a dungeon under its own cathedral."
Lucan's voice came from behind them.
"No."
Everyone turned.
The inquisitor had followed.
"The Church built a maintenance complex. Someone later made it behave like a dungeon."
Rhea nodded. "That is how most institutions explain dungeons."
Depth One contained no enemies.
Only doors that charged a small amount of Essence to open.
Aren paid none.
The doors did not know what to do with him. Tavian opened them manually with a pry bar.
Depth Two retaliated.
Covenant script crawled across the floor and attached to anyone carrying an oath.
Seris's House affiliations lit gold.
Tavian's sect membership.
Lucan's Church authority became so bright Aren had to look away.
Aren remained dark.
The first construct formed from those connections. A kneeling knight made of contract paper. It attacked the person with the most obligations.
Lucan.
"That seems unfair," Tavian said.
Lucan blocked.
"Most law is."
The knight rebuilt whenever destroyed.
Rhea identified the problem.
"It isn't alive. It's a recurring obligation."
Aren struck the paper body.
Nothing.
He looked at the floor.
The construct's connection to the maintenance seal pulsed every time it returned.
Worldspine warmed.
Not enough for full Mandate Severance.
Enough to interrupt.
Aren drove the broken tip into the glowing seal. The relation snapped for one second. Seris destroyed the knight during the gap.
It did not rebuild.
[DEPTH II SENTINEL neutralized.]
[No Origin.]
[Technical salvage detected.]
A small brass tooth fell from the seal.
[COVENANT SERVICE KEY - Uncommon.]
Lucan picked it up.
The object accepted him.
"Mine," he said.
Rhea looked offended.
"I was going to steal that."
"I know."
Depth Three began behind a wall that legally did not exist. The Archive Clasp preserved the original maintenance record long enough for Rhea's Redaction Needle to locate the overwritten seam. Book One and earlier Book Two loot.
One object proved the record.
The other found where someone had altered it.
The false wall opened.
Beyond waited the Covenant Hound.
Its first growl wrote KNEEL into reality. Aren tightened his grip on Worldspine. The dungeon had finally reached its boss.
He lowered Worldspine.
Behind him, Seris was still fighting KNEEL. Tavian's hands shook against the floor. Nara had one bottle left in reach. The Hound opened its mouth again. This time Aren did not wait to hear the word.
