Chapter 182: YOU WILL NOT LIKE THE CONSEQUENCES
Owen sensed something was not right, but he couldn’t pinpoint what it was. Was it because this young alpha lacked fighting? He didn’t try to get away from his grip. He didn’t even struggle, as if he had known what would happen to him.
It didn’t make sense.
But he didn’t have time to dwell on it. He had to send Matt back to Zade’s side. Hopefully, this time, this foolish woman could get the job done, and Zade remained unaware that it was Matt who had freed Oscar before they could get his mate.
Owen used his sharp fingernail to tear Matt’s sleeve and made an incision on his upper arm, letting his blood pool beneath him as he chanted something under his breath.
Even at that moment, Matt didn’t struggle. He didn’t fight back and simply stared at his father.
"Do it with her," Owen said, nodding at Oscar.
Oliver then grabbed Oscar’s hand and took out a dagger from his pocket; he slashed his wrist.
"That hurts!" Oscar whined. "I have been suffering the whole night; why can’t you give me a break?"
"Shut up!" Owen growled dangerously. He threw Oscar a dagger look for all his complaints.
But he didn’t need to be worried anymore, because a second later, they could hear the whistling sound of a bullet that cracked the air and settled on Oscar’s head. The next second, his body dropped to the ground, dead.
The second bullet followed, but this time, the devil was ready; he grabbed Oliver and disappeared before their eyes. The second bullet grazed empty air, hitting the space only a few centimeters away from Matt’s thigh, who was still kneeling on the ground.
Nothing happened for a moment until someone approached Matt warily and saw that his father’s body had turned into a mud of black blood. Oscar’s body had melted like ice under the sunlight.
"This... this is not possible..." Jack was dumbstruck to witness what he had just seen before his eyes. He wouldn’t mistake Owen Brooks and his brother.
But what had he done? How could he do that? What were they?
He staggered back because of the strong, rancid smell that came from the black puddle on the ground, but Matt didn’t move. He didn’t even scrunch his nose when he moved closer and touched it.
This was what was left of his father. He couldn’t even bring back his body to be buried.
King Zade had warned him this would happen, but he still agreed to go on with the plan. He knew there was no way to save his father, but the way he called him his son, even when it was not him, still pierced his heart.
"Your real enemy is not us, Jack," Zade said. He stepped out from his hideout with Seara close to him. She had ensured the devil was not nearby, though their lingering presence was still very strong. "Your real enemy is among your own ranks, controlling the country’s forces."
Jack was in his late fifties, and he had gone through a lot of hardship and wars outside of this country, but he had never seen anything like this or even faced something irrational.
He didn’t want to believe it, but the reality was right before his eyes. There was no explanation that could make sense of how Owen and his brother had disappeared into thin air. It was just like trying to explain how a human could transform into an animal.
"What are you?" Jack turned around to face Zade; he looked back and forth between him and the delicate woman next to him. He wondered why they had to bring a woman into this mess. This was not a place for a woman like her.
Jack had read a report about Seara; he knew that she had been in a psychiatric ward for a few months. She was mentally unstable.
"You have known us," Zephyr answered the question. He emerged from behind the pillar as he put a safety pin into his gun. He was the one who had shot Oscar and Oliver, though he missed the second bullet. "We are shifters, but the one that you will face when you return to your base is the devil."
"What is it? Do you think this is a fairy tale where there are the devils and the good guys?"
A huge grey wolf joined them and shifted into his human form right before Jack’s eyes. "If we exist, do you think the devils do not?" Jared signaled to the other warriors to bring over the other three men. They were the people Owen had brought with him to check the area.
However, in a case like this, these trained soldiers were nothing against the trained warriors of the shifters.
Taking advantage of the fact that the devils couldn’t discover their presence by scent alone, Zade planned everything.
Actually, the first idea came from Seara. She was the one who suggested that Zade show Jack what the devil was capable of doing, as it would increase the possibility of him believing them; however, she lacked details.
"They are alive," Jared said when he saw the look on Jack’s face.
"You can take them back with you and think about who your real enemy is."
Zephyr gestured for the warriors to let go of the unconscious soldiers and then walked toward Jack. He handed him a car key.
"Go back to your base and set up a meeting between our king and yours. You don’t want the war with our people, Jack. You don’t know what we are capable of doing. We have kept peace and avoided wars for so many centuries by hiding our existence, and we don’t want to start it now. The war between shifters and humans is what the devils want."
Zephyr then handed Jack a phone.
"Let us know the time and place, and we will come. Don’t betray us, Jack. You will not like the consequences."
