Chapter 400: Chapter 232: Jiang Sifan: Mom, if I forgive Dad, what about you?

The next morning, sunlight squeezed through a gap in the curtains, casting a golden ray of light on the bedsheets.

After washing up, Jiang Sifan stood in the hallway and waited for a while.

The door to the next room opened, and Wen Wan walked out. Her eyes were still swollen, but her hair was tied up neatly, and she had changed into a clean white sweatshirt.

When she saw Jiang Sifan, she lowered her head slightly and said softly, "Morning, Class Monitor."

Jiang Sifan looked at her, wanting to say something, but he didn’t know how to begin.

He just nodded. "Let’s go get some breakfast."

The two of them went downstairs. Lu Fan was already sitting in the dining area.

Seeing them approach, Lu Fan greeted them with a smile. "Come on, get something to eat. We’ll head to the hospital in a bit."

Wen Wan sat down, picked up her bowl of congee, and took a sip, sucking in a sharp breath from the heat.

Jiang Sifan pushed the steamed dumplings toward her. She picked one up and chewed it slowly without a word.

Lu Fan put down his chopsticks, looked at her, and said in a calm tone, "Wen Wan, I’ve already paid your grandfather’s medical bills. The follow-up treatments and care have all been arranged, so you don’t have to worry."

Wen Wan froze, her chopsticks hovering in mid-air.

She looked up at Lu Fan, her eyes instantly turning red. Her voice trembled. "Uncle Lu, how can I accept this... I..."

Lu Fan waved his hand and chuckled. "What’s there to be embarrassed about? You’ve helped Sifan so much, so it’s only right that I help you. Besides, you shouldn’t have to bear the burden of your grandfather’s situation all by yourself."

Wen Wan’s tears fell. She lowered her head, wiped them away with the back of her hand, and said, "Thank you, Uncle Lu."

"Eat up. We’ll go see your grandfather after we’re done." Lu Fan smiled and didn’t say anything more, simply placing a steamed dumpling in her bowl.

Wen Wan nodded and lowered her head to continue eating.

She finished every last drop of the congee in her bowl.

After breakfast, the three of them got in the car and drove to the hospital.

Wen Wan sat in the back seat, gazing out the window the entire time.

When they arrived at the hospital, Wen Wan pushed open the door to the room and immediately saw her grandfather propped up in bed. His complexion was much better than yesterday, and his eyes were brighter.

The caregiver was pouring him a glass of water. Upon seeing them enter, the caregiver smiled and nodded.

"Grandpa!" Wen Wan walked over quickly, crouched by the bed, and took her grandfather’s hand.

The old man’s hand was still just as thin, his knuckles prominent, but it was much warmer than yesterday.

He raised his other hand and gently patted the back of hers. His voice was a little weak, but clear. "Wan’Er, you’re here? Grandpa’s fine now, don’t worry."

Fresh tears fell from Wen Wan’s eyes. She leaned against the bed, her voice choked with sobs. "Grandpa, you scared me to death."

The old man chuckled and stroked her hair. "Grandpa’s a tough old bird. It’ll take more than this to kill me. What about you? You ran out last night, did anything happen?"

"No, the Class Monitor and Uncle Lu came to get me," Wen Wan said, shaking her head.

The old man nodded and looked toward Jiang Sifan, who was standing by the door, sizing him up.

Jiang Sifan felt a little uncomfortable under his gaze but still stepped forward and greeted him, "Hello, Grandpa."

The old man’s gaze lingered on him for a moment before he slowly nodded, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "So you’re the Class Monitor Wan’Er talks about?"

"Yes. My name is Jiang Sifan," Jiang Sifan nodded.

The old man said no more, turning back to Wen Wan with a helpless expression. "Wan’Er, Grandpa has let you down. Your mother... she only has eyes for money. She insisted on calling you back for that blind date, and I couldn’t stop her. And your father is no help at all..."

Wen Wan shook her head, squeezing his hand. Her voice was thick with tears. "Grandpa, it’s not your fault. Ever since I was little, you’ve been the one who loves me most and protects me most. Don’t say that."

The old man’s eyes reddened as well. He sighed, his voice growing softer. "Our family finally has a university student, but your mother only thinks about your little brother. I’m old now, I can’t control her anymore. You listen to Grandpa. Go back to school today and don’t come back. During the New Year, just go on a trip. If you don’t have enough money, Grandpa will give it to you."

"Grandpa, I have money. Don’t you worry about me. Just focus on getting better. When you’re well, I’ll take you to Jinling for a visit." Wen Wan’s tears flowed uncontrollably. She buried her face in the back of her grandfather’s hand and wept.

The old man patted her head and said nothing more, his gaze once again falling on Jiang Sifan.

He watched for a moment, then suddenly spoke. "Wan’Er, step outside for a bit. Grandpa wants to have a few words with this young man."

Wen Wan paused, looking up at her grandfather, then over at Jiang Sifan.

Jiang Sifan gave a slight nod.

She wiped her tears and stood up. "I’ll be right outside, Grandpa."

The old man nodded.

Wen Wan walked out of the room, gently pulling the door closed behind her.

The hallway was quiet. She leaned against the wall, her heart beating a little fast.

Only her grandfather and Jiang Sifan were left in the room.

The old man leaned back against his pillow and looked at Jiang Sifan. His gaze was gentle, as if he were looking at one of his own.

He held out his hand, and Jiang Sifan quickly walked over and took it.

The old man’s hand was strong, his grip firm.

He looked Jiang Sifan up and down, then began to speak slowly. "Son, tell me the truth. Do you like Wan’Er?"

Jiang Sifan’s face flushed red instantly. He opened his mouth but didn’t know what to say.

Seeing his expression, the old man chuckled. His voice was still weak, but it carried the tone of someone with a lifetime of experience. "Grandpa’s lived a long time. There isn’t a kind of person I haven’t seen. One look at your face, and I understand."

"Grandpa, I..." Jiang Sifan lowered his head, his ears turning red as he spoke in a small voice.

The old man waved a hand, cutting him off. "Don’t be nervous. Grandpa isn’t trying to give you a hard time. That child, Wan’Er, she’s been introverted since she was little. She doesn’t talk much, and she keeps her grievances to herself. Her mother is biased and only cares about her little brother. I’m old, I won’t be around to look after her for many more years. In the future... in the future, please look out for her."
