Chapter 399: Chapter 231: The Father and Son’s First Late-Night Conversation, A Blind Date

He put down his phone, took two steps, then picked it back up.

In the end, he dialed the number.

The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.

Wen Wan’s voice came from the other end of the line, thick with nasality. She had clearly been crying. "Class President..."

Jiang Sifan’s heart clenched. He quickly asked, "What’s wrong? Were you crying?"

Wen Wan was silent for a moment before whispering, "It’s nothing."

Jiang Sifan grew anxious. "Tell me the truth. What happened?"

"My mom is making me go on a blind date. We’re supposed to meet tomorrow," Wen Wan fell silent again, her voice trembling as she continued, "She said if I don’t agree, she won’t let me go back to school."

His fears were confirmed. ’So that’s what it is.’ He said urgently, "Wait for me. I’m coming over right now."

Wen Wan quickly protested, "You don’t have to, Class President. It’s too late..."

Jiang Sifan cut her off. "Just wait."

He hung up the phone, pushed open his door, and knocked on Lu Fan’s.

The door opened. Lu Fan saw his ashen face and asked, "What’s wrong?"

Jiang Sifan blushed as he explained, "Wen Wan’s mom is forcing her to go on a blind date tomorrow. If she doesn’t go, her mom won’t let her return to school. I want to go get her."

Lu Fan looked at him. He didn’t ask why, just nodded. "I’ll have Chen He drive. Don’t worry. We’ll figure it out when we get there."

The car sped through the night.

Jiang Sifan sat in the back, clutching his phone and staring out the window.

Lu Fan sat beside him in silence.

He knew that nothing he could say would help right now. It was better to let Sifan calm down on his own.

After a long while, Jiang Sifan suddenly spoke. "How did you win Mom over back then?"

Lu Fan was taken aback. He hadn’t expected him to ask this.

He thought for a moment, then said with a smile, "Shameless persistence."

Jiang Sifan turned to look at him.

Lu Fan chuckled, his tone light. "Your mom was working at a factory back then, and a lot of guys were pursuing her. I didn’t have any special skills, just a thick skin. I’d wait for her to get off work every day and eat with her. At first, she ignored me, but I just kept pestering her. Then, one day, she blushed and told me, ’Stop walking with me. I don’t like you.’"

"I told her, ’You not liking me is your business. Me walking you home is my business.’"

He paused, then smiled. "After that, her heart softened, and she got together with me."

Jiang Sifan said nothing, turning back to the window.

A moment later, he asked again, "Then why did you leave her later on?"

"Because I was an asshole." Lu Fan didn’t dodge the question, answering truthfully.

After hearing that, Jiang Sifan didn’t ask any more questions.

By the time the car drove into town, it was almost eleven at night.

The streets were mostly empty. Dim yellow streetlights illuminated the potholed road.

Chen He parked the car in front of Wen Wan’s house. Jiang Sifan pushed the door open and got out, with Lu Fan following behind him.

The courtyard was pitch-black, with only the main room lit.

Just as Jiang Sifan was about to knock, the door opened.

Wen Wan stood in the doorway, her eyes red. She was holding a plastic bag containing a few changes of clothes.

"Class President..." she called out, fresh tears falling.

Looking at her, Jiang Sifan felt as if something had struck him hard in the chest.

He walked forward, gently took her hand, and said softly, "Let’s go. I’m taking you with me."

Wen Wan nodded and followed him into the car.

The moment the car door closed, the door to the main room was pushed open.

Mrs. Wen stood in the doorway, an overcoat thrown over her shoulders, and shouted at the car, "Wan’Er! If you leave, don’t you ever come back!"

This time, Wen Wan didn’t look back.

The car drove out of town, heading toward the city.

Wen Wan leaned against the car window, tears streaming down her face.

Jiang Sifan sat beside her, holding her hand, not letting go.

Lu Fan sat in the front passenger seat. He glanced at them in the rearview mirror but said nothing.

「Back at the hotel, it was nearly midnight.」

Lu Fan had the front desk add another room, right next to Jiang Sifan’s.

Before entering her room, Wen Wan looked back at Jiang Sifan and said, "Class President, thank you."

Jiang Sifan shook his head, his tone gentle. "Don’t thank me. Get some sleep. We have things to do tomorrow."

Wen Wan nodded and went into her room.

Jiang Sifan stood in the hallway for a long time, staring at the closed door.

Lu Fan walked over and patted his shoulder. "Stop standing around. Go get some sleep."

Jiang Sifan looked at him and said suddenly, "I’ve been thinking about what you said earlier."

Lu Fan looked at him, waiting for him to continue.

Jiang Sifan said, "I won’t be like you. I won’t be that kind of asshole. I’ll be good to the girl I love. I won’t leave her."

Lu Fan was taken aback for a second, then he smiled and nodded. "Good."

Jiang Sifan turned, entered his room, and closed the door.

Lu Fan stood in the hallway, looking in the direction of his son’s room, and smiled.

He was very curious. With Wen Wan on one side, and another girl on the other, he wondered how his son would ultimately choose between them.
