Chapter 394: Chapter 230: Lu Fan Takes Sifan to Yixia’s Hometown
Jiang Sifan had just come back from the restroom and saw her slumped over the desk, her shoulders shaking. He was startled.
He hurried over, knelt in front of her, and asked softly, "Wen Wan? What’s wrong? What happened?"
Wen Wan looked up, her eyes and the tip of her nose bright red. Her voice was so choked with sobs she could barely get the words out. "Sifan, I have to go home. My grandpa’s sick—really sick. I don’t think I can finish the project for the studio..."
Seeing her like this, Jiang Sifan’s heart ached.
He took her hand. It was ice-cold and still trembling.
"When are you leaving?" he asked.
Wiping her tears, Wen Wan said, "I’ll see if I can get a ticket. If I can leave today, I will. If not, then tomorrow."
Jiang Sifan stood up, his tone resolute. "I’ll go with you."
Wen Wan froze, looking up at him with her still-red eyes. "You don’t have to, Sifan. You’re busy with the studio..."
"The studio can wait," Jiang Sifan cut in, voicing his concern. "I’m worried about you going back alone. Your mom asked for so much money last time. What if she tries again when you’re back..."
He didn’t finish his sentence, but Wen Wan knew what he meant.
She lowered her head, pressed her lips together, and nodded.
Jiang Sifan added, his tone growing more serious, "If it comes to that, I’ll get you out of there. I won’t let you carry this burden alone."
Tears welled up in Wen Wan’s eyes again, but this time, they were from being deeply moved.
She nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "Okay."
Jiang Sifan said, "Go pack your things. I’m going to let Silu know."
He stepped into the hallway and called Jiang Silu.
"Silu, I’m going with Wen Wan to her hometown. Her grandpa is really sick," Jiang Sifan explained.
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Jiang Silu suggested, "Brother, you should tell Dad. I have a feeling there’s more to Sister Wen Wan’s family problems than meets the eye. Her mom came asking for money last time, and now all of a sudden her grandpa is critically ill... Just think, what are the odds of it being a coincidence?"
"I don’t know... We’re always troubling him," Jiang Sifan hesitated.
Jiang Silu grew frantic, her voice rising a few notches. "Brother, just do it as a favor to me. Tell Dad and have him help Sister Wen Wan find out which hospital her grandfather is actually in. I’m worried her mom is lying to her again. Sister Wen Wan is too good of a person to be pushed around by her mother like this."
After a moment’s thought, Jiang Sifan finally nodded. "Okay."
Jiang Sifan hung up and pulled up Jiali’s number.
He took a deep breath and made the call.
It rang twice before someone picked up.
"Sifan? What is it?" Jiali’s voice, laced with concern, came through the phone.
Jiang Sifan explained what was happening with Wen Wan.
After he finished, Jiali’s tone turned serious. "Don’t worry. I’ll look into it and let you know as soon as I have an update."
Hanging up the phone, Jiali immediately called Lu Fan.
"President Lu, something has come up regarding Sifan. Wen Wan’s grandfather is sick, and she has to rush back home. Sifan is worried and asked if you could help find out which hospital her grandfather is really in, and how he’s doing."
After listening, Lu Fan thought for a moment. "Alright, you look into that. Also, book business class tickets for you, me, Chen He, Sifan, and Wen Wan. We’re all going together."
Jiali sounded surprised. "President Lu, you’re going as well?"
"Wen Wan has helped Sifan and Silu so much. Now that her family is in trouble, I can’t just stand by and do nothing. Besides," Lu Fan added with a smile, "this is the first time Sifan has ever asked me for help. I can’t disappoint him."
"Understood," Jiali replied. "I’ll book the tickets now."
Jiali then called Wen Wan.
When the call connected, her voice was gentle, as if she were comforting an upset younger sister. "Wen Wan, the tickets are booked for first thing tomorrow morning. They’re business class. President Lu is coming with us to see how we can help."
Wen Wan was stunned, her voice trembling. "Sister Jiali, there’s no need to trouble Uncle Lu... I can go back by myself..."
"This was President Lu’s idea," Jiali said, her tone gentle and reassuring. "He said you were a great help in patching things up between him and his son, so just think of this as him returning the favor. Don’t refuse, just focus on getting ready. We leave early tomorrow."
Fresh tears streamed down Wen Wan’s face.
She didn’t know what else to say, so she just kept repeating "thank you" over and over.
After hanging up, she sent Lu Fan a text message.
It was only four words, but she spent a long time composing it, deleting and retyping again and again.
Wen Wan: [Thank you, Uncle Lu.]
Lu Fan replied almost immediately.
Lu Fan: [You’re welcome. Get some rest. We’re leaving early tomorrow.]
Wen Wan stared at the message, clutched the phone to her chest, and cried for a long time.
She thought of all the years she had shouldered her family’s burdens alone, never once imagining that someone would help her like this.
「Early the next morning」 Chen He’s car pulled up to the entrance of the Jinling Institute of Technology.
Jiang Sifan and Wen Wan got in, and the car headed for the airport.
Wen Wan sat in the back seat, her eyes still puffy. She clutched her phone, her gaze drifting out the window from time to time.
Jiang Sifan sat beside her, wanting to say something but not knowing what.
After a moment’s hesitation, he gently touched her hand. She didn’t pull away. Instead, she gently squeezed his fingers.
When they arrived at the airport, Chen He went to handle the check-in.
Jiali was already waiting at the entrance to the VIP lounge. Seeing them approach, she greeted them with a smile.
"Come on, let’s go inside and rest. The flight doesn’t leave for another hour."
Wen Wan and Jiang Sifan followed her inside.
As she pushed open a heavy glass door, both of them froze.
