Chapter 129: Fever

’They probably know exactly how little their lives are worth here.’

Perhaps that was why some of them were willing to risk throwing themselves beneath a moving RV rather than offend the people living in the inner area... people who might not even care if they died.

Ni Mengxue handed over another hundred zombie crystals per person before the RV and its passengers were allowed through the inner gate.

The inner area looked somewhat similar to Burning Star Base.

It was clean, orderly, and free from the chaotic fights that were common in the slums.

People were also much better dressed, and the streets were relatively peaceful.

However, the foul smell from the slums still lingered in the air.

Ni Mengxue frowned slightly. ’Even with the walls between them, the smell still reaches here.’

Soon, they arrived outside a hotel.

A receptionist immediately approached them with an enthusiastic smile.

He looked directly at Ni Mengxue.

"Miss, are you looking for a place to stay? We have luxurious suites available. One suite costs 5000 zombie crystals for a single night."

Ni Mengxue’s eyebrows twitched. ’5000?’

The receptionist continued smoothly.

"You can also get two rooms for the same price: 5000 zombie crystals per night. It’s a special package for your group."

Ni Mengxue stared at him. ’This guy is definitely trying to rob me.’

Still, she nodded. "All right."

The receptionist’s smile widened. "Please follow me."

He led them toward the so-called luxurious suite.

The moment Ni Mengxue stepped inside, her expression turned strange. ’This is a luxury suite?’

It was nowhere near what she considered a five-star hotel.

It was barely comparable to a three-star hotel from before the apocalypse.

There wasn’t even a proper bathroom.

The bathroom door was damaged, and from a glance, Ni Mengxue could tell that its lock had been jammed for a long time.

There was no heating or cooling system either.

The bed had a mattress, but it was hard and uncomfortable.

Judging from the thick layer of dust in the corners, the room hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time.

Or perhaps the hotel simply didn’t want to waste resources on cleaning.

A stale, suffocating smell filled the room, like the air inside a room that had been sealed shut for years.

Ni Mengxue stood at the entrance, speechless. ’And they have the nerve to call this a luxurious suite?’

She sighed inwardly.

’Once my system is upgraded, I’ll definitely build hotels that are actually clean and worthy of being called presidential suites or five-star hotels.’

Ni Mengxue and the others soon settled down to rest.

Lu Yucai, however, had been watching her quietly.

From the moment he had kissed in front of Meng Xiaoni until now, Ni Mengxue had done nothing except take care of him. She had even deliberately avoided getting too close to him.

He understood what she was afraid of, so he couldn’t bring himself to question her further. But at the same time, he felt a strange itch in his heart.

He couldn’t explain it. He wanted some kind of reaction from Ni Mengxue, yet she remained as calm as still water.

Ni Mengxue sensed his gaze and looked over with a smile. "What happened, hubby? Do I look beautiful?"

She walked over and gently ran her fingers through his hair.

Lu Yucai paused before unconsciously closing his eyes.

There was always a faint, pleasant fragrance around Ni Mengxue. Whenever she came close to him, he felt inexplicably relaxed.

Seeing him relax, Ni Mengxue smiled and leaned closer to his ear. "Tonight, let’s be a little more intimate."

Lu Yucai’s eyes widened slightly before a hint of amusement appeared in them. "You’re not avoiding me anymore?"

Ni Mengxue shook her head. "I’m not avoiding you."

She kissed his eyes, then his nose. Just as she was about to kiss his lips, a loud banging suddenly came from the door.

Ni Mengxue froze.

A dark expression flashed across her face.

’Why did I bring so many people with me? If we were alone, at least I could spend some private time with Lu Yucai whenever I wanted.’

Suppressing her frustration, she walked to the door and opened it with a smile. "Yes? How may I help you?"

The moment she opened the door, she saw Fu Jing. His entire face was flushed, and he looked as though he had run all the way there.

He hurriedly said, "Sister Ni, my brother has a fever. Even after taking medicine, his condition isn’t improving."

Ni Mengxue’s expression turned serious.

She had noticed that Fu Sinan had developed a fever shortly after entering Silent Knight Base, but he had assured her that it wouldn’t worsen so quickly.

Now, however, things were clearly different. She immediately followed Fu Jing to his room.

Once inside, she checked Fu Sinan’s pulse. After a brief moment, she finally relaxed.

"Congratulations. Your brother is most likely about to awaken a superpower."

Fu Jing froze. Horror immediately appeared in his eyes. "No, no!"

He hurried toward the door, shut it, and quickly drew the curtains.

Ni Mengxue frowned. "Boy, what are you doing?"

"Don’t tell anyone!" Fu Jing whispered urgently. "If they find out, they’ll kick him out of the base or send him to the quarantine area."

Ni Mengxue blinked.

Fu Jing quickly explained,

"Everyone who awakens a superpower has a fifty percent chance of turning into a zombie. That’s why people who develop symptoms of an awakening are usually quarantined. They won’t be released until their condition stabilizes and they successfully awaken their ability."

Ni Mengxue lowered her gaze. "I see."

She then waved her hand, and a bowl of porridge appeared. It contained carrots, cabbage, and several other vegetables.

"All right. Don’t worry."

She began feeding the unconscious Fu Sinan.

Fu Jing didn’t say anything. He hurried into the bathroom, brought out some water, and soaked a cloth in it.

He then began wiping Fu Sinan’s body to help lower his fever.

Just as the two of them were busy, someone knocked on the door.

It was as if cold water was thrown at Fu Jing and Ni Mengxue.

Ni Mengxue quickly composed herself. "Yes?"
